Pam Moran - Transforming Libraries
Dr. Pamela Moran has served as the Superintendent of Albemarle County Public Schools since January 2006. She oversees a division with an annual operating budget of $160 million, with more than 1,200 teachers educating over 13,600 students in 26 schools. During Dr. Moran’s tenure, Albemarle County Public Schools has become one of the top performing school divisions in the state with an on-time graduation rate of 93 percent. The performance of its students on Advanced Placement tests ranks the division in the top three percent of all school divisions in the U.S. and Canada, according to a recent report by the College Board.
Dr. Moran has long had a commitment to providing broad-based and innovative learning opportunities for students, believing that excellence in multiple disciplines provides students with the skills essential to becoming successful as citizens, in the workforce, and in post-secondary education.
The division, which has received the Governor’s Award for Excellence in educational technology, opened a Math, Science and Engineering Academy at Albemarle High School in 2009, and this past year, the academy’s first graduating class earned an average of $23,500 per student in merit scholarships. This year, the division opened a new Health and Medical Sciences Academy at Monticello High School. Earlier this summer, the division piloted a CoderDojo Academy to develop computer design and programming skills among students and will offer the academy at several school locations during the school year.
Dr. Moran is a leading advocate of Learning Spaces, an educational model that emphasizes project-based-learning in non-traditional settings and promotes collaboration, analytical and critical thinking, and communications proficiency among teams of students.
A member of the Governor’s Commission on Higher Education, Dr. Moran has served as President of the Virginia Association of School Superintendents. She is an active participant in numerous local civic organizations, including the Charlottesville Rotary, the regional Chamber of Commerce, the Charlottesville-Albemarle Public Education Fund, and the University of Virginia-Public Schools Educational Partnership. She recently served as president of the Women Education Leaders in Virginia and is a past president of the Virginia Association of Science Supervisors.
Dr. Moran’s career in public education includes serving as a high school science teacher, central office science coordinator and staff developer, elementary school principal, director of instruction, assistant superintendent for instruction, and adjunct instructor in educational leadership for the University of Virginia’s Curry School and the School of Continuing Education. She graduated with a B.S. in Biology from Furman University and holds a Master’s and Doctoral degree from the University of Virginia.

You might have noticed balloons floating over Westport's Green Farms Road Tuesday - a planned test for a proposed cell tower site in that location. They float at 150 and 110 feet in the air and the test gives the company behind the proposal North Atlantic Towers - reference points when it comes to their cell tower evaluation.
These things should not go in any residential neighborhood, said Hope Hageman
Meanwhile, back on the ground, a group of Westport residents are protesting that proposal.
There are other places they can go, they don't have to go right outside your house, said Hope Hageman, Westport resident.
So, we are protesting this 13 story, it looks like, tower - which may have health problems for young children and adults - and also it an eye sore, said Connie Greenfield, Westport resident.
Westport town regulations currently outlaw cell towers in residential zones. But that's still not enough to put an end to the project. A state committee formed in 1996 called the Siting Council holds the ultimate power, deciding where cell towers are located all throughout the states with the ability to override all local zoning laws. Connecticut is the only state to have such a committee.
The one thing that is very scary about them is that they have been empowered to override local zoning ordinancies, said Hageman.
Agencies like the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), the National Toxicology Program (NTP), and the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) do not classify cell phone towers as potential health hazards.
But some studies suggest the opposite.
One study published last year in Brazil says it established a direct link between cancer deaths in Brazil's third largest city with a cell phone network.
But while facts may differ on public health impacts, state officials still came out to support today's rally. They reminded the group they need to present alternate locations, since cell phones are far too common of a household device.
We need to empower our local leaders to have a template to deal with this, said State Rep. Tony Hwang.
So far, almost two hundred residents have signed a petition in opposition to this cell tower. But it is important to remember that an official proposal has yet to be submitted by North Atlantic Towers. This Westport Group is hoping their visual opposition will make the company think twice.
