Bolstering Population of Endangered Snails
ESF grad student Cody Gilbertson has been researching endangered Chittenango amber ovate snails, to conserve them through a captive breeding program.
She was recently able to release 20 tagged Chittenango Amber Ovate snails into the wild in Chittenango Falls Park in Central New York. It is their only known habitat in the world. The project is part of a collaboration with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, NYS Department of Environmental Conservation, NYS Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation, Rosamond Gifford Zoo and Seneca Park Zoo to save the snails from extinction.

Connecticut 1799 Anderson map based on Tanner shows Oblong land dispute area w/ NY
A New Map of Connecticut from the best Authorities, 1799.
(North America / United States / State Map / Long Island Sound).
Issued [1799]- 1806, New York by J. Low. Drawn by A. Anderson.
Scarce late 18th-early 19th century American engraved map. Longitude given from Philadelphia.
Of note for being among a handful of maps of this state (or any state) produced within the early years of the United States prior to 1800. Based on B. Tanner's 1796 map of the state, repeating his earlier mistake of showing the Bryan River too far along the southwestern boundary.
Note the long thin oblong track of land along the NY & CT boundary, an area under dispute at this time between these two states.
Map displays light to moderate age spotting but still retains a pleasing appearance and age patina.
Sheet measures c. 8H x 10W.
Engraved area measures c. 7 3/8H x 9 1/8W.

At the city's peak of population in the mid-1860s, it had an estimated 25,000 residents. The mines' output declined after 1878, and the city declined.
