Las Vegas/Grand Canyon Hike/New Orleans 2014
During June 2014, myself and three of my high school buddies (Nick Moore, Ryan Steinmetz, Dan McKeown) celebrated our college graduations by traveling across America and visiting some of the country's most prolific locations.
We began our trip on June 3rd by flying into Las Vegas. After spending three days there, we drove to Flagstaff, Arizona; and we got to see the Hoover Dam along the way. From Flagstaff, we began a three-day hike of the Grand Canyon. Guided by an awesome guide from the Wildland Trekking Company, we hiked to the bottom of the Canyon and, over the course of the next two days, back up again. Finally, we drove to Phoenix, Arizona, to catch a flight to New Orleans, Louisiana, After spending two full days there, we finally returned home to Staten Island, NY.
Grand Canyon Classic Hike
For three days in June 2014, we hiked the Grand Canyon from top to bottom along the South Kaibab trail.
Here is video- shot from a GoPro camera- that captures some of the best views of the hike, crossing the Colorado River, and camping at Phantom Ranch.

Along the Arizona Trail
The Arizona Trail is 880 miles in length. It traverses the great state of Arizona in a south to north trajectory starting at the Mexican border and ending at the Utah border. Bart Smith thru-hiked and photographed the trail in April and May of 2009. These images are from that hike.
The first piece of music is by Los Lobos, it is titled Arizona Skies and is available on the CD titled Kiko.
The second piece of music is by Ry Cooder, it is titled I like your eyes and is available on the CD titled Music by Ry Cooder.
The third piece of music is by Daniel Lanois, it is titled Blue Bus and is available on the CD titled Here is what it is.
All images are by Bart Smith except for the image of Dale Shewalter (following the full moon). Dale founded the Arizona Trail.
Thanks to all who support the Arizona Trail.
Havasupai Falls, Supai, Grand Canyon, Arizona
One of the most beautiful hikes I've taken through canyons and streams as well as the longest.
Quite a ways up north from Phoenix since it's all the way up Grand Canyon Territory and then a drive along a two-way road headed inside a Native American Reservation towards the trail head.
It's a 10-mile hike to the village near the camping grounds. Then another 1 to 2-mile hike past Little Navajo Falls to reach the grounds. Make sure to drop by the little grocery store at the village if you need supplies before heading to the site.
Before reaching the grounds, you'll pass by two waterfalls: Little Navajo and the enchanting Havasu Falls. It's going to make your jaw drop especially when you see the hue of the water.
Once you reach the campsite, look for a place to set up camp and there's also a fountain spring on site along with compost toilets.
Mooney Falls is past the campgrounds down the site of mountain/cliff. You'll have to climb down through caves/holes and steps to reach it. Beaver Falls is past Mooney down a 4 to 5-mile trail. Quick tip, if you're on the trail and see a wooden ladder to the right. Do not take it, unless you want an additional hour of rigorous hiking. Just go straight past the stream continuing the trail.
Tips:
You have the option of having your belongings such as your tent and other necessities to the campsite via pack mule/horse. There's a fee of course, but that means you won't have to lug around a bunch of stuff while hiking 12 miles or so.
You also have the option of taking a helicopter to and from the village.
Hiking to Havasupai is beautiful and easy. Hiking from Havasupai is beautiful and exhausting because of the 2-mile ascent from the bottom to the top at the trail head.

Mooney Falls
Mooney Falls is located in the Nantahala National Forest Standing Indian Basin area. It's about 9 miles from the Nantahala Woodland Lodge. nantahalawoodlandlodge.com. The trailhead is located on F.S. Road 67 about 7 miles beyond the Backcountry Information Station. The trail meanders to the falls through an archway of rhododendron and mountain laurel. Moss-covered chestnut logs, remnants of a bygone era, lie in beds of galax and wildflowers. This trail is a delight to photographers and families who enjoy short hikes. For your safety, do not try to climb the rocks around the waterfall. They are wet and very slippery.
