According to Russia's Interior Ministry’s press office, the mammoth tusks and their fragments are at least 10 thousand years old and were excavated in Yakutia. The cargo was en route from Moscow to Minsk.
The ivory seizure's value is reportedly millions of roubles.

Russian Geography Lesson 19:
Full Lesson:
Transcript:
-----------------------
Rusky Ed here and in this lesson we will be taking a look at the Central Federal District. More on that following the intro song, but until then be sure to check out the focus words.
Although it’s called the Central Federal District (or Центра́льный федера́льный о́круг
in Russian), it’s actually located pretty much in the western portion of Russia. In fact, federal subjects which are considered to be part of the Central Federal District share borders with Belarus (Беларусь) and Ukraine (Украина). Altogether there are eighteen federal subjects which comprise the Central Federal District and they are as follows:
Tver Oblast
Smolensk Oblast
Moscow Oblast
Yaroslavl Oblast
Bryansk Oblast
Kaluga Oblast
Moscow
Vladimir Oblast
Ivanovo Oblast
Kostroma Oblast
Kursk Oblast
Oryol Oblast
Tula Oblast
Ryazan Oblast
Belgorod Oblast
Lipetsk Oblast
Voronezh Oblast
Tambov Oblast
That’s a lot of federal subjects to keep track of and so it’s convenient that they are grouped into one district. Also of special interest, it should be pointed out that there are two separate federal subjects called Moscow (Москва) and Moscow Oblast (Московская область) and Moscow is surrounded by the Moscow Oblast.
Moving along we have the following vocabulary words for this lesson:
местность - terrain, area, region, ground
равнинный- flat
зрение- sight, vision
дамба - dam, dike, levee
русло - riverbed, channel, course, direction
основной - basic, primary, fundamental, main
The sample sentences for these words are as follows:
В области видимости местность была равнинной.
В поле зрения местность была равнинной.
В поле зрения ландшафт был равнинным.
(The terrain was flat as far as the eye could see.)
(There are two major dams along the course of the river.)
Often in life we must deal with nonsense which can be annoying and which can sometimes provoke us to be sarcastic. It is with this thought in mind that we will deal with the following review words:
обнаружить - detect, spot, discover
распознать - recognize, discern
сарказм - sarcasm
сытый - satisfied, full, satiated
горло - throat
ерунда - nonsense, rubbish
And now for a few sample sentences:
Сарказм часто трудно обнаружить.
(Sarcasm is often difficult to detect.)
(Sarcasm is sometimes hard to recognize.)
(I’m fed up with this nonsense.)
Literally “сыт по горло” means full to the throat, but it is used in a way which makes it equivalent to “fed up with” in English.
Other phrases with similar meaning include:
Меня это достало. (I’m sick of it.)
(I’m sick of it already.)
(I’m sick of it worse than bitter radish.)
Although достать can have a range of meanings, colloquially it means something like to be annoyed. Interestingly, осточертело is derived from сто which means one-hundred and чертей which means devils. And finally the idiom regarding the bitter radish is widely used in Russia. Vladimir Putin has even used the idiom in speeches, for instance.
And that’s it for this lesson...

Russia: places to visit | Tula is the capital of Russian weapons
This is our first video in our “Must See” series where I’ll tell you what things in Russia are worth your time to see and what should be avoided at all costs.
↓↓↓↓ Must See ↓↓↓↓
In this episode, we are visiting Tula. Some call it the “city of craftsmen” because ever since Medieval times a lot of tools, weapons, and other goods were made right here.
You’ll definitely feel the productive spirit in Tula at some of its museums, especially the Tula State Museum of Weapons. It is impossible to not notice this unique helmet shaped building that houses the Arms Museum, which is one of the biggest of its kind in the world. If you are at all interested in melee Russian weapons, hunting and sport rifles and/or hardcore military tech then coming here would be a good idea. You will definitely get inspired. If you want to know more about the history of when those weapons were used in medieval Russia then check out the Tula Kremlin right smack in the middle of downtown.
It may seem like Tula is all about arms which are only partially true. Tula is also the home to the totally non-violent Pryanik cookies and inside the Tula Kremlin, there is a museum where they will show you how to make one of these Russian sweets with your own hands. And since they seem to last forever they are a great gift to take back home. Locals consider their Pryanik cookies to be the supreme Russian biscuit with a totally unique flavor that you can only get here in Tula.
Tula may have a unique taste but it also has a unique sound, the sound of accordions! Tula is still a leader in accordion production to this day. Not only can you see accordions but hear them and learn to play songs for yourself. Who knows maybe you can take one home to impress (and/or annoy) your friends and family around Christmas?
All this and more will be in our next video. After that, we will have our first “Must Eat” where you’ll experience the best food that Tula has to offer and see where you absolutely must stop to eat while visiting this fantastic city. Food and vacation go hand-in-hand so our Must Eat series should be a great help to those who want to experience Russian food the right way!

Krasnodar is the southern capital of Russia/
The city of Krasnodar is administrative center of Krasnodar Krai, a major economic and cultural center of the North Caucasus and southern Federal districts, the center of the historical and geographic area Kuban. Krasnodar is often informally referred to as the capital of Kuban and the Southern capital of Russia. The name of the city of Ekaterinodar received as a gift of the Kuban land from Empress Catherine II to the Black Sea Cossack army, who served here. The City was founded in 1793 as a military settlement of the Black Sea Cossacks, and later the fortress. “Ekaterinodar” means “gift of Catherine” in English.
According to the latest archeological studies (West Caucasian archeological expedition) the Meotian settlement surrounded by the wall of IV-III century B.C. was discovered near the current Park municipal garden in the central part of Krasnodar.
The bank of the Kuban river in the vicinity of Krasnodar ( the territory of the village of Elizavetinskaya) was the location of the ancient city of the Bosporan Kingdom with the fortified walls. Gradually the city's role is no longer confined exclusively to the military settlement. In 1860 the settlement obtained the title of administrative centre of the newly formed Kuban Region, and the city status was conferred to Ekaterinodar in 1867. In the 70-80-ies of the XIX century, with the opening of the railway in the North Caucasus (Tikhoretsk — Ekaterinodar — Novorossiysk), the city became a major commercial, industrial, and transportation center of the North Caucasus region.
During World War 2, August 9, 1942, Krasnodar was occupied by German fascist invaders, who destroyed thousands of residents of Krasnodar in the movable gas chambers. 870 homes in the city were destroyed and burned. 4 higher educational institutions, equipment of laboratories and libraries, theaters of drama and musical Comedy, the Palace of pioneers, almost all the schools, clubs, cinemas were burned. The most valuable tree species in city parks was cut down and damaged. February 12, 1943 the city was liberated by the Red Army.
In south-eastern part of the Krasnodar located reservoir, built in 1973 for the implementation of production and reclamation activities.
Krasnodar is one of the largest economic centers in the world, included in the list of City-600 and The Best Russian city for business by the magazine Forbes. The main areas are engineering and Metalworking, production of building materials, garments and knitwear, furniture, tobacco products, food and agricultural products. Krasnodar Krai is the main granary of Russia. The construction industry of Krasnodar is growing rapidly. Krasnodar is a major transport hub in southern Russia, a major educational and exhibition centre. The largest exhibition center in the South of Russia Krasnodar Expo is constantly conducting various forums. Krasnodar Krai is one of the leaders of of the national ranking of the tourist attraction.

A note on 'Ivan the Terrible' - in Russia, Ivan IV has the epithet 'Гро́зный' meaning 'Great' or 'Formidable'. So why is he known as Ivan 'the Terrible' in English? Because he was evil or useless or because of anti-Russian bias? No, because 'Terrible' in English also means awesome or formidable - this was well understood when 'Гро́зный' was first translated into English centuries ago, but now fewer people understand this. (see definitions 3 & 4 here: The name stuck, and Ivan IV has been known as Ivan the Terrible ever since.

(Russian kremlin - Smolensk)
Smolensk (Russian: Смоленск; IPA: [smɐˈlʲensk] ( listen)) is a city and the administrative center of Smolensk Oblast, Russia, located on the Dnieper River, 360 kilometers (220 mi) west-southwest of Moscow. Population: 326,861 (2010 Census);325,137 (2002 Census);[5] 341,483 (1989 Census).[6]
This walled city was destroyed several times throughout its long history since it was on the invasion routes of both Napoleon and Hitler. Today, Smolensk is noted for electronics, textiles, food processing, and diamond faceting.
A kremlin (Russian: кремль, tr. kreml; IPA: [ˈkrʲemlʲ], fortress; same root as in kremen (Russian: кремень, tr. kremen; IPA: [krʲɪˈmenʲ], flint)) is a major fortified central complex found in historic Russian cities. This word is often used to refer to the most famous one, the Moscow Kremlin, or metonymically to the government that is based there. Outside Russia, the name Kremlin is sometimes mistakenly thought of as being Saint Basil's Cathedral[dubious -- discuss] because of its distinctive environment, although the cathedral is not a part of the Moscow Kremlin.
Russia's presidential administration is located in the Moscow Kremlin. During the Cold War the government of the USSR was located in the Moscow Kremlin but now the Russian government occupies a building outside it.

In the summer of 1941 German army was the strongest in Europe and was preparing to use its superiority to defeat the Soviet Union in a three-month lightning campaign. The Soviets, on the other hand, were preparing for a long war and had built up a strong war economy, but the modernization and expansion of the Red Army was still underway and its methods and organization were not yet fully tested in battle. Can the Wehrmacht damage the Soviet Union enough to prevent a recovery or can the Soviets hold until their long-term advantages start to have a strong impact on the war?

Krievi - Krīvi - Venäläiset - Russians - Московити
Ethnic Russians (in English), Krievi (in Latvian), Krīvi (in Latgalian), Росіяни (in Ukrainian), Rosjanie (in Polish), Venälaižed (in Veps), Venelased (in Estonian), Vindläseq (in Vöro). Russia (English) but Venäma in Estonian and Krievija in Latvian (bcs of Kriviches tribe) and Krīvija in Latgalian. Kriv was legendary Baltic (!) forefather of Kriviches, some sort of a heathen high priest. According to a recent genetic study, namely Baltic Lithuanians happened to be the closest genetic relatives of central Russians (Orel, Bryansk, Smolensk, Ryazan, Ivanovo oblasts - lands of Viatiaches tribe. Viatiches practised Baltic burials. Besides that they abosrbed Baltic Golyad) - see video on genetics of Russians.
Modern Russian ethnicity got formed out of several tribes. Several Slavic tribes, mainly Kriviches (northern and western Russians, from Kriv, Baltic forefather), Viatiches (south and central Russians / Slavs with Baltic substratum), Baltic tribe of East Galindians (Golyad of Moscow region), plus a number of Finnic tribes (Merians, Vepses, Komi-Permians, Muroma and Erzyans (Mordvins). European Russians are mainly Balto-Slavs with significant Finnic admixture (especially in the north). I would say that Viatiches (Slavic tribe with Baltic element) played the crucial role in the formation of Russian ethnos -
Viatichi - Kaluga (around Kaluga), east & south Moscow (along Moscow river) region, north Orel, north Ryazan region
Meria (Finns) - Ivanovo, Yaroslavl, Tver, and Kostroma regions (mixed with Kriviches)
Kriviches (many believe it is an old Baltic tribe) - Pskov, Smolensk, Yaroslavl, Tver, Ivanovo regions (mixed with Meria)
Golyad (East Galindians) - pure Balts - northern Kaluga region (around Borovsk and Omninsk, basin of Protva river) and western Moscow region (Vereya, Naro-Fominsk)
Radimichi - around city of Briansk
Novgorod Slovenes (spoke dialect similiar to Polish) - Novgorod, St. Petersburg regions (mixed with Veps / Ves tribe there). Some say Slovenes were a separate ethnicty from Muscovites (Pure Muscovites = Viatiches+Galinidians and some Merians). Novgorod Slovenes+Vepses (Finns) produced Pomors (northernmost Russians of Arkhangelsk & White Sea coast). Pomor shirt emroidery is identic to Veps.
Center of Viatiches tribe was in Korno (Kornoye, Mosalsk district of Kaluga province).
Chronicle says that Viatko, progenitor of Viatiches came from Poland. Viatiches, unlike other Slavs, had Baltic burials and jewellery (they have built up on some Baltic substrathus).
Vantit (Vait) - Arabic name for the land of Viatiches (original Russians). Viatichia would be more fair and distinctive ethnic name for Russia.
Note that the name Russia / Russians originally was just a political & religious term and didnt have any ethnic or tribal connotation. It was brought by the Viking sailors and first implied Maritime Swedes (Roden) - Ruotsi is Sweden in Finnish), then it served as uniting term for medieval Ukrainian tribes and people (Kyivan Rus state as Kyiv was the center of Viking Rurikide dynasty), then it was adopted as official name for Muscovite state (since the early 18th century) becoming uniting term for the tribes centered around Moscow, what we understand as modern ethnic Russians. Its similar to political terms Rome and Romans, that was transplanted from one people to another (Ancient Rome and Romans, then Romance people, Romeiko - Byzantine Greeks, Romania and Romanians etc).
-----------------------------------------
Ukrainians consists of completely different tribes (Derevlians, White Croats, Dulibes (Volhynians), Siverians which have nothing to do with modern ethnic Russians (Muscovites) and what is today understood as Russia (former Muscovy). Totally different folk costumes, patterns, embroidery, culture, language, genetics etc.
------------------------------
Belarusians likewise consist of different tribes (Drehoviches + Polotsk Kriviches and some Volhynians) that are very different from Viatiches tribe (progenitor Russian tribe). Though northern Belarusians belonged to same Kriviches tribes, but this tribe had 2 branches that developed separately - northern Pskov Kriviches (in Russia) and southern - Polostk & Smolensk Kriviches (northern and eastern Belarusians). These werent the same as they lived in great distance. Baltokrievija is Latvian name for Belarus. In general Russians and Belarusians, unlike Ukrainian, have significant Baltic element (hence Baltic akanie (pronouncing o as a) in their languages, unknown in Ukrainian. Ethnically Ukrainians are more close to south Belarusians, Lusatian Serbs (ancient Croats), south Poles, Slovaks, and Czechs (all have Scytho-Sarmatian h sound instead of Balto-Slavic g)

Vyazma
Vyazma is a town in Smolensk Oblast, Russia and throughout her turbulent history, defended the western approaches to Moscow.
First mentioned in chronicles dating to 1230, the town is believed to be much older and was named after the river, whose name was from Russian word вязь (vyaz'), meaning bog or swamp.
The town remained a part of the Smolensk principality until 1403, when it was seized by the Grand Duchy of Lithuania.
In 1494, Vyazma was captured by the Grand Duchy of Moscow and turned into a fortress town with an earthen stronghold erected on a high cliff overlooking the Vyazma River. After the devastating wars of the 16th and early 17th centuries, Moscow decided to rebuild the kremlin, but without costly masonry walls. Within these fortified walls also contained a cathedral, dedicated to the Trinity. During the 1812 War, the town fell to the retreating French and much of Vyazma was burnt to the ground………..
