Opening weekend audiences give their reactions to the world premiere of The Spiritualist (NOW THRU SEPT 15, 2013) at TheatreSquared in Fayetteville, Arkansas!
T2 opens its eighth season of professional theatre with the world premiere of The Spiritualist, by Robert Ford, a comedic drama based on the strange-but-true story of an English widow who claimed to channel the spirits of dead composers. Inspired by news accounts of a 1970s-era psychic who found fame channeling the unfinished symphonies of Beethoven, Liszt and others, the production features Amy Herzberg as self-proclaimed spiritualist Rosemary Dunn and is directed by Chicago-area director Kevin Christopher Fox (Sundown Town, The Fall of the House). Performances will be held in the intimate Studio Theatre at Walton Arts Center's Nadine Baum Studios, where new audience seats have just been installed, at 505 W. Spring Street in Fayetteville. Tickets range from $22-$36 and are on sale now at the Walton Arts Center Box Office, by phone at (479) 443-5600 or online at theatre2.org.
Based on the true story of a woman in 1970s-era London who found remarkable fame and success through her otherworldly communications, The Spiritualist stars Rosemary Dunn, an English widow who cooks for the school lunch service and communes with the spirits of dead composers. When a crusading American newspaperman tries to unmask her as a fraud, he finds more to the so-called psychic than meets the eye. The Spiritualist reveals an unlikely intersection between art and commerce, sanity and the hope for transcendence.
The Spiritualist contains occasional adult language and is recommended for ages 13+.
The new season will also mark the debut of new audience seating in TheatreSquared's intimate performance venue (mentioned in the rave reviews!). One hundred and seventy-five new theatre chairs, with contoured padding and ergonomic support, have been installed in the Studio Theatre over the summer months, together with backstage renovations that added dressing rooms for larger casts, state-of-the-art lighting instruments, and a new crew communication system.
The cast for The Spiritualist features T2 Associate Artistic Director Amy Herzberg as Rosemary Dunn, who previously appeared in My Father's War and has directed five productions for TheatreSquared including Next to Normal (2013). She is joined by Broadway veteran Sean Patrick Reilly (Superior Donuts, The Beauty Queen of Leenane on Broadway) as Roy; John T. Smith (Mauritius, Sundown Town, Jacob Marley's Christmas Carol at TheatreSquared) as Beethoven / BBC Host; Steven Marzolf (The Fall of the House at T2) as Liszt; Kristopher M. Stoker (Noises Off, My Father's War, The 39 Steps, It's a Wonderful Life at T2) as Peter Clifton; and Kathy Logelin (Mauritius, It's a Wonderful Life, Noises Off at T2) as Margaret / Haynes / Clara Schumann.
The creative team for The Spiritualist includes Kevin Christopher Fox (Director), who previously directed the world premiere of Sundown Town and Robert Ford's The Fall of the House at TheatreSquared; as well as T2 veteran designers Shawn Irish (Scenic and Lighting Designer), Patricia Martin (Costume Designer), Genevieve Headrick (Properties Designer), Will Eubanks (Sound Designer / Assistant Technical Director), Emily Bohannan (Stage Manager), Melissa Haar (Assistant Stage Manager) and Josh Tillotson (Technical Director).
A limited number of $10 tickets are also available for patrons under the age of 30 through the theatre's 30 Under 30 program.
TheatreSquared 2013/14 season subscriptions are also available. The theatre's newly expanded subscription options include five-play packages as well as a new Pick Four option, offering all of the benefits of a full season package with the flexibility to choose four performances.

NORTHWEST ARKANSAS—February 18, 2011—Due to high demand, TheatreSquared will extend its World Premiere production of Sundown Town....
The production will continue through Sunday, February 27, with four new performances Thursday at 7:30, Friday at 7:30, Saturday at 7:30, and Sunday at 2:00 at Walton Arts Center's Nadine Baum Studios (505 W. Spring St.) in Fayetteville, Arkansas. Tickets range from $22-24 ($10/under 30) and are on sale now at the Box Office at (479) 571-2728 and at theatre2.org.
It's an understatement to say that interest in Sundown Town has been overwhelming, said T2 Managing Director Martin Miller. After adding seats and performances, we were still turning away hundreds of ticket buyers for our final performances. We are thrilled to be able to open our doors for another four performances February 24 through 27.

The arts are generating more than creativity in northwest Arkansas. The arts have had an increased impact on the local economy throughout the years, according to reports.
The arts have a pretty big impact on the economy in northwest Arkansas. Americans for the Arts calculated that Theatresquared had an estimated impact of $1.3 million last year, said Martin Miller, managing director of Theatresquared.
The economic impact of the arts in northwest Arkansas has increased from $16 million in 2005 to $46 million in 2010 and has created over 1,400 full-time jobs, up from the 500 full-time jobs reported in 2005, according to an Americans for the Arts economic impact report which included data from 25 nonprofit and cultural organization in Washington and Benton Counties.
Nationally, employment in the arts has stayed steady with a slight decrease from 2.24 million in 2008 to 2.15 million in 2011, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.
The 2007 to 2009 recession could have had an influence in the decrease of jobs in the arts industry at that time, officials said.
This is measured by an Americans for the Arts national statistical report, which shows audience expenditures decreased from $103.1 billion in 2005 to $74.1 billion in 2010
Arts and culture organizations are resilient in tough times. In northwest Arkansas, the number of jobs, economic activity and state and local revenue from the arts sector have almost tripled from 2005 to 2010. The arts are different than other industries in that events create an audience-related spending and the ability to attract tourists we know spend more money than locals, said Bethany Bobbitt (CQ), Walton Arts Center public relations manager.
Money spent on parking, eating out and lodging factor into revenue generated from the arts.
The arts makes northwest Arkansas a tourist destination and helps attract and retain people for the local business community and plays an important role in the cultural vibrancy of our region, Bobbitt said.
The average audience member spends $20 above the cost of admission to the event,
according to an Americans for the Arts economic impact report.
This extra money spent outside of cost of tickets is a significant and measurable impact on local restaurant, retail, hotels and other local businesses, Bobbitt said.
The estimated attendance of events was 746,655 during 2010. These attendees spent an estimated total of $14.6 million, excluding the cost of admission, according to an Americans for the Arts economic impact report.
The national median of money spent outside of cost of admission was $21,573,435 in 2010, according to an Americans for the Arts economic impact report.
The arts are different than other industries in that events create an audience related spending and they have the ability to attract tourists who we know spend more money than locals, Bobbitt said.
Contributions sustain the growth of the arts in northwest Arkansas.
The organizations that participated in the study reported that they received contributions with an estimated value of $528,019 during fiscal year 2010. These contributions were received from a variety of sources including corporations, individuals, local and state arts agencies and government.
The new performing arts center that was recently donated to the UofA will increase
the influence the arts have in this community. Having such a high quality venue is most certainly a win, Miller said.
The arts have increased in awareness and activity in Fayetteville in the past 10 years, Rachel Tebbetts, artists and owner of Ease Arts Supplies said
I think it's a combination of the inspiration that comes from being surrounded by
a gorgeous landscape, the importance placed on education and cultural awareness because of the UofA and the proximity to a thriving corporate community with Wal-Mart, Tyson, JB Hunt and others, Bobbitt said.

Her youngest daughter Valerie followed that up at the Child's Play summer camps where Valerie became a star solo vocalist. Thrilled by seeing Julia's words performed on stage and hearing Valerie's theatrical voice on stage, Diana realized that Child's Play served her girls in a large way...Child's Play instilled in them the joy of learning. Diana joined the Board in 2006 and currently serves as Board President. She is honored for her hard work, dedication and unending support on behalf of Child's Play.
