Black Hills South Dakota Vacation [Family Travel Vlogs] hill city
Day 5 (part 2) of 12 - 2018 family summer vacation!
Why do we call this a mystery vacation? we are pulling from a hat each time we want to change locations. Where will we end up next?
This is a 12 day series and we plan to do a short recap each day.
Day 5 (part 2) - See our adventures through Custer State Park, Crazy Horse and Bedrock City from the Flintstones located in Custer, SD (theme park and campground recently closed in 2015).
This video begins where we left off at Mount Rushmore, South Dakota
We drove a portion of the Needles Highway going through one of the cool rock formations which surrounds the highway. We stopped off searching for cool stones on a hiking trail near Sylvan Lake where we experienced amazing rock formations.
We then moved on to the Crazy Horse Memorial for a few hours. You pay by car so the more you fit in the car the more money you save.
We had dinner at The Hubcap Diner in Hill City, SD.
Although the day took longer than expected we had fun. We ended up staying in the town of Custer where we spotted Bedrock City which was at one time part of a much larger theme park campground.
We saw Crazy Horse Memorial where we got to experience Native American Dancers from the Sioux Tribe.
Crazy Horse (Lakota: Tȟašúŋke Witkó in Standard Lakota Orthography,[2] IPA: /tχa'ʃʊ̃kɛ wit'kɔ/, lit. 'His-Horse-Is-Crazy'; c. 1840 – September 5, 1877)[3] was a Native American leader of the Oglala Lakota in the 19th century. He took up arms against the United States federal government to fight against encroachment by white American settlers on Indian territory and to preserve the traditional way of life of the Lakota people. His participation in several famous battles of the American Indian on the northern Great Plains, among them the Fetterman massacre in 1866, in which he acted as a decoy, and the Battle of the Little Bighorn in 1876, in which he led a party to victory, earned him great respect from both his enemies and his own people.
In September 1877, four months after surrendering to U.S. troops under General George Crook, Crazy Horse was fatally wounded by a bayonet-wielding military guard, while allegedly[4][5] resisting imprisonment at Camp Robinson in present-day Nebraska. He ranks among the most notable and iconic of Native American warriors and was honored by the U.S. Postal Service in 1982 with a 13¢ Great Americans series postage stamp.

History of the Sioux Falls Coliseum
Civic pride built the Sioux Falls Coliseum in 1917 and civic pride kept the building from being demolished and gave it a new life. Despite two fires, vote after vote, and the sifting political sands of a town that always wanted more, the Coliseum remained the center of Sioux Falls cultural, social, and often sports life, for 80 years before being reborn. Those who toured the country in the middle part of the century generally stopped at the Coliseum. Presidents, boxing champions, movie stars, world class musicians and so many others graced the building with their presence.

Custer State Park is a state park and wildlife reserve in the Black Hills of southwestern South Dakota, USA. The park is South Dakota's largest and first state park, named after Lt. Colonel George Armstrong Custer. The area originally started out as sixteen sections, but was later changed into one block of land because of the challenges of the terrain. The park began to grow rapidly in the 1920s and gained new land. During the 1930s the Civilian Conservation Corps built miles of roads, laid out parks and campgrounds, and built three dams that set up a future of water recreation at the park. In 1964 an additional 22,900 acres (93 km2) were added to the park. The park covers an area of over 71,000 acres (287 km2) of hilly terrain and is home to many wild animals.

Spearfish Canyon is a deep but narrow gorge carved by Spearfish Creek just south of Spearfish, South Dakota in the U.S. It is located on the northern edge of Black Hills National Forest. Many tourists drive through the canyon, drawn to the region due to its wide range of plant and wildlife, geology, rock formations, and waterfalls. Spearfish Creek holds populations of rainbow and brown trout and is dammed in several spots, affording fishing opportunities. Stocking of trout in Spearfish Creek was discontinued in the 1970s and all trout in the creek today are wild. In addition, remnants of Spearfish Canyon's active mining history are still easily found in some locations. Ready to explore the world? Find the best rates in for your booking needs

Mount Rushmore and Oreville Campground --- Joyful Camping
What a fun time at MOUNT RUSHMORE!!! It was so exciting to visit this national monument. We made a long weekend of the visit and did activities in the area as well. If you have a chance to visit the monument I highly recommend taking the trip.
We stayed at Oreville Campground which was a nice (very short) drive to the monument and the campground itself was very peaceful. Although right by the main road we really didn't notice the road noise.
