The main shrine is an early rock cut temple which has cells that house the sanctums of Subramanya, Durga, Vinayakar, Shiva and Vishnu. All the statues are carved on the wall of the parankundram rock. A curious feature of this temple is that the Gods Shiva and Vishnu face each other in the main shrine, and this is a rare thing in ancient Hindu temples. There are five Theerthams, or divine water sources, in and around the temple. There are several architectural features of interest, especially the rock cut portions of this hill temple dating back to the Pandya period and the life sized sculptures in the mandapams of the Nayakar period. The Kambathadi Mandapam, Ardha Mandapam, and Mahamandapam are situated at different levels. In the south-eastern part of Kambaththadi mandapam there has been found a 30 m long tunnel. Rock-cut temple contains also 41 inscriptions revealing the early history of the temple. The important festival in this Temple is Vaigasi visagam, which is celebrated as Lord Subramaniyar's birthday, and Surasamharam, which is celebrated in the month November or December every year.

Inscriptional evidences point out that this temple, being carved out of a hill, was most probably earlier a Jain cave. There is another theory that earlier to this, the Murugan temple existed much before the 6th century and converted into Jain worship centre by Jain monks under the aegis of Pandya king Koon pandiyan. The temple was later converted into a Hindu temple under the tutelage of Gajapathy, the minister of a later Pandya King, during the later part of the 8th century. The temple has several additions during the regime of Madurai Nayaks who commissioned the pillared halls in the temple.
In modern times, the temple is maintained and administered by the Hindu Religious and Endowment Board of the Government of Tamil Nadu.

The annual feat will conclude with ‘Thirukalyanam’ on November 14
Kanda Sashti festival began at Subramania Swamy Temple in Tiruchendur with ‘yagasala puja’, which was witnessed by thousands of devotees, on Thursday.
The temple, considered the second abode of Lord Murugan, who vanquished demon Soorapadman, witnesses an inflow of devotees from various parts of India and also other countries such as Sri Lanka and Malaysia during the festival.
After the temple was opened at 1 a.m., ‘Vishwaroopa deeparadhanai’ was performed at 1.30 a.m., followed by ‘Udhaya Marthanda abhishekam’ at 2 a.m.
After Lord Jayanthinathar (Lord Murugan) arrived at the ‘yagasalai’ around 6 a.m., along with Goddesses Valli and Deivanai, the yagasalai puja was performed to mark the commencement of the festival. ‘Mahadeeparathanai’ was offered at the yagasalai at 12 noon.
After taking a holy dip in the sea, thousands of devotees began their ‘Sashti fasting’.
The highlight of the annual feat, ‘Soorasamharam,’ would be enacted on the beach at 4.30 p.m. on November 13. The sanctum sanctorum would be opened at 3 a.m. until November 12. On the night of November 14, ‘Thirukalyanam’ would take place.
A 12-pillar mandapam, located behind Thoondugai Vinayagar Temple, in Sannathi Street collapsed early in the morning on Thursday. However, no casualties were reported.
The structure, which had developed cracks, is said to have collapsed due to the intermittent rain over the last few days. Devotees demanded the structure be pulled down completely.
Palani
Marking the special occasion, deeparadhana was performed soon after ‘uchikala puja’ was conducted at Dhandayuthapani Swami Temple in Palani. A large number of devotees had gathered since 2 a.m. at the temple.
Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments officials said the temple would be open from as early as 1.30 a.m. and the festival’s highlight was the Soorasamharam, which would be enacted on the night of November 13. The celestial wedding of Shanmugar with Valli would be witnessed by thousands of devotees the following day, with which the kanda Sashti festival would draw to a close.
The Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation has been operating special bus services to Palani since Wednesday.
The police have installed additional cameras for surveillance.
