Travel with me | The Thousand-Buddha Cliff | Jiajiang County, Chengdu, China????
Come with me to see the Thousand-Buddha Cliff (千佛岩) in Jiajiang county (夹江) Chengdu.
There are a couple of stone signs along the way which tried to provide short explanations of what the Jiajiang Thousand Buddha Cliff is about. Apparently the statues on the rocks were carved by the Chinese commoners during the prosperous Tang Dynasty and there are more than 2,470 statues within 162 niches. These carvings were dated earlier than the Leshan Giant Buddha.

The name of this site is also called, Jiajiang Thousand Buddhas Rock Scenic Area in Leshan City. It is about a two hour drive from downtown Chengdu. It is not that easy to locate this place as it is hidden past the small village and if you do not understand Mandarin, it may be quite challenging to find it without a guide!
We had a guide and driver that took us here. It is well worth a visit before your visit to the Leshan Grand Buddha as it gives you a perspective of buddha statues in a much smaller size. You will need to walk through the street of a small local village, Leshan City before arriving to the scenic area. There are many small shops selling food, vegetables, fruits and other food staples along side small restaurants and housing of locals. Our guide informed us that some of the buildings along this street are well over 400 years old and still standing in excellent condition. The villagers do not speak any English at all. Keep walking past the village until you reach the end and pay a small admission fee to enter.
Allow yourself at least 2 hours or so to wander into town, then the caves where the buddhas are located, and perhaps a local meal in town before departing. Visiting here really left me feeling that this was and is the real feeling of what ancient China used to be. It is a much slower way of life and there are not that many people around. There are no crowds, long lines, or bikes and motor bikes!

Shandong (山东; formerly romanised as Shantung) is a coastal province of the People's Republic of China, and is part of the East China region.
Shandong has played a major role in Chinese history from the beginning of Chinese civilization along the lower reaches of the Yellow River and served as a pivotal cultural and religious site for Taoism, Chinese Buddhism, and Confucianism. Shandong's Mount Tai is the most revered mountain of Taoism and one of the world's sites with the longest history of continuous religious worship. The Buddhist temples in the mountains to the south of the provincial capital of Jinan were once among the foremost Buddhist sites in China. The city of Qufu is the birthplace of Confucius, and was later established as the center of Confucianism.
Shandong's location at the intersection of ancient as well as modern north–south and east–west trading routes have helped to establish it as an economic center. After a period of political instability and economic hardship that began in the late 19th century, Shandong has emerged as one of the most populous (95,793,065 inhabitants at the 2010 Census) and most affluent provinces in the People's Republic of China with a GDP of CNY¥5.942 trillion in 2014, or USD$967 billion, making it China's third wealthiest province.
Mount Tai
Mount Tai is a mountain of historical and cultural significance located north of the city of Tai'an, in Shandong province, China. The tallest peak is the Jade Emperor Peak, which is commonly reported as 1,545 metres tall, but is described by the PRC government as 1,532.7 metres.
Mount Tai is one of the Five Great Mountains. It is associated with sunrise, birth, and renewal, and is often regarded the foremost of the five. Mount Tai has been a place of worship for at least 3,000 years and served as one of the most important ceremonial centers of China during large portions of this period.
