The Three Capes Scenic Drive Along the Oregon Coast
In today's video, we take the Three Capes Scenic Loop Drive from Tillamook down to Pacific City Oregon. Unfortunately, the road was closed so we had to go slightly out of order but we still got to see the three capes. The first cape is Cape Meares and the lighthouse by the same name. Make sure to check out the Octopus Tree while there! Next cape is Cape Lookout which we decided to drive on by. Finally, we get down to Pacific City and Cape Kiwanda which rounds out our 3 capes. The beach at Cape Kiwanda was awesome between the fishing boats screaming into shore, the giant sand dune and the tide pools. We had a blast! Plus we got to eat some delicious tacos. Mmmmm.

Cape Falcon, Devil's Cauldron & Manzanita Beach Stunning Sunset, Oregon Coast
The 2.5 mile hike to the cape travels through a well preserved coastal forest full of Sitka Spruce and Western Red Cedar. If it's wet, probably best to choose a different hike in that the trail can become VERY muddy and the wet tree roots present a challenge! The short hike to Devil's Cauldron is well worth it. The views of the Cauldron and looking south down the coast are simply stunning! And, nothing quite like a sunset at sunset at nearby Manzanita Beach!

Oregon Coast Motorcycle Ride: Pacific City to Tillamook
Ride with us along Oregon's Coast from Pacific City to Tillamook. Leaving Route 101 we arrive at the coast town of Pacific City. Heading north along the coast we ride along Netarts Bay and through the town of Oceanside. From the spectacular views of Three Arch Rocks at Oceanside we continue north to the lighthouse at Cape Meares. Retracing our ride the short distance to Netarts we follow Highway 131 to Tillamook where we rejoin Highway 101. 37 miles along Oregon's Pacific Coast. Part 8 of our 7 day Oregon Coast Motorcycle Ride.
Hug Point Historical Road Oregon Coast Then and Now!
In the late 1800's the Oregon coast was just beginning to be settled and there were NO roads. Pioneers used the beach as a road to travel north & south delivering goods and passengers to the various settlements. South of Cannon beach the land jutted out into the water making passage around the point only doable at low tide. As the population grew so did traffic creating a problem. So, using whatever tools they had the pioneers chiseled out a narrow, primitive road around the point. The road was used until the early 1930's. Now the road is primarily used by walkers and hikers... at low!
Beautiful Oregon Coast drive. Visiting Cape Meares and Devils Punch Bowl
Beautiful Oregon Coast drive. Visiting Cape Meares and Devils Punch Bowl.
Cape Meares State Scenic Viewpoint is located on a headland over 200 feet above the Oregon coast. Cape Lookout and Cape Kiwanda are the other two capes on this route. Cape Meares provides an excellent view of the largest colony of nesting common murres. The site is one of the most populous colonies of nesting sea birds on the continent. Bald eagles are frequently seen in this area, and peregrine falcons have also been known to nest near here.
Devils Punch Bowl Trail is a 1 mile heavily trafficked out and back trail located near Otter Rock, Oregon that features beautiful wild flowers and is good for all skill levels. The trail is primarily used for hiking, walking, nature trips, and birding and is accessible year-round.
Surfers and surf watchers energize this area. During winter storms, water from the restless ocean slams with a thundering roar into a hollow rock formation shaped like a huge punch bowl. The surf churns, foams, and swirls as it mixes a violent brew. The punch bowl was probably created by the collapse of the roof over two sea caves, then shaped by wave action. The park is a popular whale watching site and displays an intriguing geology. This is a scenic picnic spot atop the undulating rocky shoreline. Don't forget to explore the tidepools. Devil's Punch Bowl offers beach access and opportunities for picnicking, hiking, exploring the shoreline, and viewing scenery...
Cape Meares Lighthouse
The inside of the lighthouse is open May to September yearly. Admission and tours are free, require no reservations and are during the hours of 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. weekdays, with extended hours on the weekends starting in June running through August hours are 11:00 am.to 6:00 pm. Each day the lighthouse is closed from 2:00 pm to 2:30 pm. The base of the lighthouse tower, including a small gift shop, is fully open during these hours. The lighthouse tower is also open for tours, no backpacks, or children being carried are allowed up the tower for the safety of visitors and the tower.

Episode15: Three Capes Scenic Route
Today we’re taking a trip to Oregon’s Three Capes Scenic Route, which includes Cape Kiwanda State Natural Area, Cape Lookout State Park and Cape Meares.
Cape Kiwanda is the smallest of the three with just 185 acres.
The next stop on the Three Capes Scenic Rout is Cape Lookout State Park, which is just 10 miles north. There are more than eight miles of hiking and walking trails that wind through the forest, which consists of over 2,000 acres of land.
During World War II, a B-17 bomber struck the cape while on patrol. It took a full day for rescue crews to reach the sole survivor. A plaque in memory of the aircrew is located on the cape trail.
Next we drove 15 miles north to Cape Meares State Scenic Viewpoint. It is situated on a headland over 200 feet above the ocean. The site is one of the most populous colonies of nesting sea birds on the continent.
Cape Meares has over three miles of hiking trails and a mile-long walking trail that winds through old-growth spruce trees, including the uniquely-shaped Octopus Tree.
The Octopus Tree is a massive Sitka spruce with branches growing like giant tentacles from its 50-foot base.
The tree’s odd shape, according to local historians and Tillamook tribal descendants, comes not from the ravages of wind, as some have said, but from its function as a ceremonial site, shaped to hold cedar canoes and other ritual objects.
The lighthouse on Cape Meares was decommissioned in 1963, stood vacant for a number of years and was heavily vandalized. Hippies would frequently be found living in the keeper's dwellings.
As late as 2010 2 guys opened fire on the empty lighthouse causing over $50,000 in damages but in 2018 it received a new coat of paint so all is forgiven.

Cape Lookout - Oregon Coast
Cape Lookout is a sharp rocky promontory along the Pacific Ocean coast of northwestern Oregon in the United States. It is located in southwestern Tillamook County, approximately 10 miles (16 km) southwest of Tillamook, just south of Netarts Bay. The promontory extends 1.5 miles (2.4 km) perpendicular to the coast, and is approximately 0.5 miles (0.80 km) wide at its base, tapering as it extends outward from the coast. Cape Lookout State Park is located on the north side of the promontory, which is part of the Siuslaw National Forest. Cape Lookout Road travels past the base of the cape. Cape Lookout is a member of Tillamook's Three Capes Scenic Drive.
The Cape Lookout Trail is a popular hiking trail, extending 2.5 miles (4.0 km) through Sitka spruce forest to the tip of the promontory. The cliff-top hiking trail offers views of Cape Kiwanda and Cascade Head to the south as well as Cape Meares, Three Arch Rocks, and Neahkahnie Mountain to the north. Migrating whales can also be seen, generally from December through June, as they pass the end of the cape.
