Three Rivers Petroglyph BLM Camping, New Mexico | RV Living
Exploring Tularosa New Mexico was an unexpected, yet wonderful experience! We camped at Three Rivers Petroglyph BLM site in the Tularosa Basin and loved every second. There was a 2 week limit and an actual fee at this site but it did offer water and electric, as well as flush toilets. $9 w/ America the Beautiful Pass. With over 21,000 Petroglyphs to explore, we did the hikes over and over, seeing something new each time.
We explored the nearby town of Ruidoso, New Mexico also. We truly fell in love with this area and are excited to return one day! It is about an hour from Tularosa, in the White Mountains, and is a small ski town with lots of shops and restaurants.

Three Rivers Petroglyph Site - New Mexico
Today we traveled further North to Three Rivers Petroglyph Site in Tularosa, New Mexico. This is a great place to 'dry camp' and hike! The main attraction is over 20,000 Petroglyph rock carvings easily accessible via a short hike out of the campground! We had a great time finding all (most) of the carvings and also had a chance to take some great sunset shots!

Three Rivers Petroglyph
The Three Rivers Petroglyph Site is one of the few locations in the Southwest set aside solely because of its rock art. It is also one of the few sites giving visitors such direct access to petroglyphs. The number and concentration of petroglyphs here make it one of the largest and most interesting petroglyphs sites in the Southwest. More than 21,000 glyphs of birds, humans, animals, fish, insects and plants, as well as numerous geometric and abstract designs are scattered over 50 acres of New Mexico's northern Chihuahuan Desert. The petroglyphs at Three Rivers, dating back to between about 900 and 1400 AD, were created by Jornada Mogollon people who used stone tools to remove the dark patina on the exterior of the rock. A small pueblo ruin is nearby and Sierra Blanca towers above to the east. A detailed petroglyph guide is available at the Three Rivers Petroglyph Site.
Activities
Hiking/back-packing, camping, picnicking, prehistoric interpretation.
A rugged half-mile trail begins at the visitor shelter and links many of the most interesting petroglyphs. Another short trail begins on the east side of the picnic area and leads to the remains of a Mogollon village, whose inhabitants were likely responsible for the petroglyphs. Occupied for about 400 years, the site was partially excavated in 1976. On the village site, there are foundations of three types of prehistoric buildings. A small pueblo ruin is nearby and Sierra Blanca towers above to the east. Just up the road is Three Rivers Campground and an entry point into the Lincoln National Forest.
Facilities
The site offers five shelter sites with picnic tables and cooking grills (one is handicap accessible); one group site that has three picnic tables under a shelter and two grills; two RV sites have covered picnic tables and grills and water and electric hookups. Five locations are also established for tent use, within defined boundaries. One of the tent locations is at the handicap accessible site. Restrooms and drinking water are available. Pets are allowed in the campground (on leash), but are not allowed on the trails.
Location / Access
The site is located 17 miles north of Tularosa, NM, and 28 miles south of Carrizozo, NM on U.S. 54. Turn east from U.S. 54 at Three Rivers onto County Road B30 and travel five miles on paved road, following signs.
Three Rivers Petroglyphs National Monument
A visit to Three Rivers Petroglyph National Monument in southern New Mexico. 21,000 petroglyphs carved into the rock representing birds, bighorn sheep, rabbits, deer, foxes, abstract forms, butterflies, sun daggers, migration spirals and many abstract and unidentifiable shapes. The mountain behind me is in Lincoln State Forest- 11,793 feet from the Tularosa Valley floor. We'rea bout 100 miles from the Mexican border. Petroglyphs are so mysterious. A connection with the ancient. So amazing!

Bisti/De-Na-Zin Wilderness Area - New Mexico
We recently stayed 8 days at Bisti Badlands in the De-Na-Zin Wilderness Area in New Mexico in our motorhome. When it snowed one morning and turned 23 degrees, we decided it was time to leave and head for warmer weather! It's an amazing landscape, a must see if you are in New Mexico. I hope you enjoy this little snapshot of our time there.
