Monument Valley Guided Tour // Road Trip 2019
Planning a trip to Monument Valley? Wondering if the guided tours are worth it? Click here to find out!
Monument Valley is a Navajo Reserve that essentially functions as a National Park. It's located not far from the 'four corners' of Utah, Arizona, New Mexico and Colorado. We added to our itinerary after seeing the 'big 5' National Parks in Utah (Zion, Bryce, Capitol Reef, Arches, Canyonlands), because we absolutely fell in LOVE with Utah and the red rocks.
We booked a guided tour from 4:30 - 7:30 pm, which included dinner. Special thanks for Simpson Trailhandler Tours! You can book the same or similar tours here:
There are a bunch of trails that are marked as 'guided tours only', so we would definitely recommend it. The tour guides are Navajo, and speak with great passion and enthusiasm. We learned about the customs, dance, and food of the Navajo. We even saw some 1000+ year old petroglyphs, carved by a tribe of Navajo that averaged 5 feet tall.
We learned a lot, and in the end, we would ABSOLUTELY RECOMMEND the guided tours in Monument Valley.

Produced and edited by Utah.com The Monument Valley Navajo Tribal Park maintains a visitor center, campground, and restaurant. Tours deep into the valley with Navajo guides are recommended and operate from the visitor center or from Goulding's Lodge. Visit a Hogan, the traditional Navajo dwelling, and travel into areas of the valley not accessible to private autos. Monument Valley has been the location for over 16 major movies and scores of commercials. A 14-mile graded dirt loop road within Monument Valley Navajo Tribal Park allows easy viewing of the most well known monuments:
The Mittens, Three Sisters, John Ford's Point, Totem Pole, Yei Bi Chai, Ear of the Wind

Navajo Tribal Park - Monument Valley Loop
Here is a video form when I took a drive around the Monument Valley Loop and explored the amazing buttes and other formations on the beautiful Navajo tribal land. During my trip, I got up close and personal with Sentinel Mesa, West Mitten Butte, East Mitten Butte, Merrick Butte, Three Sisters, Rain God Mesa, Totem Pole and many others. I stopped at the Forrest Gump Highway on my way out.

Monument Valley on the Utah Arizona border is a Navajo Tribal Park. Travel Clothesline The red sandstone buttes, rock formations, and cliffs rise 1000 feet above the valley floor. Many old western movies have been filmed in Monument Valley, many by director John Ford, starring John Wayne. Monument Valley Scenic Drive!!! in 4K Ultra HD
The Monument Valley Scenic Drive is 17 miles long of which 13 miles is a one-way loop, and typical times for the full trip are 2 to 4 hours. There is much to see along the Valley Drive, even if many of the views are of the same formations, just at different angles, as some of the narrower buttes look quite different from one side compared to the other. This part of Monument Valley is one of the most impressive large-scale landscapes anywhere in the Southwest, rivaling places like the Grand Canyon or Yosemite for the variety of scenes to photograph.

Magnificent Monument Valley is one of the greatest iconic and durable landmarks of the American “Wild West.” Monument Valley Navajo Tribal Park has isolated red mesas, buttes and a sprawling, sandy desert that has been photographed and captured countless times. Crimson mesas and surreal sandstone towers rise hundreds of feet into the air, some as tall as 1,000 feet.
Here we collect some important places.
The Navajo name for the valley isTsé Bii’ Ndzisgaii (Valley of the Rocks). The photographer called this shot of Monument Valley “Power”.
The Mittens, Monument Valley, Utah – Arizona. This photo was taken down from the Visitor Center at the Navajo Tribal Park. The East and West Mitten Buttes look like hands, yet are supposed to signify spiritual beings watching over the land.
“Skyline” Monument Valley. The monuments on this spectacular land were named by the Navajo, others were named by early settlers who used their imagination. One such name is the “Three Sisters” which is supposed to be a formation of Catholic nun facing her two pupils.
Totem pole – Monument Valley. A totem pole is usually carved out of wood and used as a marker by Northeastern tribes.
Once upon a time” in Monument Valley. Sandstone masterpieces tower 400 to 1,000 feet above this great valley

Storm, rainbow over Monument Valley. Although much of Monument Valley can be appreciated from the main road, so much more of the landscape is hidden from view behind long straight cliffs – the Mitchell and Wetherill Mesas – east of the road on the Arizona side.
Monument Valley, early in the morning. The highway cuts through the mesas at Monument Pass, but nearby are several dirt roads that go both east and west, and crisscross the red sandy landscape.
