Shipwreck Tour of Thunder Bay National Marine Sanctuary
A tour of some of the 93 incredibly-preserved shipwrecks sunk in the Thunder Bay National Marine Sanctuary of Lake Huron.
Diving the Thunder Bay National Marine Sanctuary, Alpena, Michigan Including the E.B. Allen
This has to be one of my favorite dives on the Great Lakes. I was invited down to Apena by another Great Lakes diver and she took me three different dive sites within the Thunder Bay National Marine Sanctuary. It was almost a perfect day, with flat, clear, and for the most part warm water. I experienced the warmest (77 F) and coldest (45 F) Great Lake's water temperatures in the same day.
I think it's important to point out, that I don't dive to film... I bring my little GoPro along to record highlights and have a reference after the dive is over. The quality isn't always that great but I have fond memories when I review some of the dives I've done. First and for most I am there to dive... the camera is secondary.

The Thunder Bay National Marine Sanctuary preserves a national treasure, nearly 200 historic shipwrecks in and around the bay. Lake Huron's cold, fresh water preserves many of these shipwrecks intact and in water depths ranging from a few inches to 200 feet, making the sanctuary a popular destination for divers, snorkelers and kayakers. You can explore the history and archaeology of these wrecks at the Great Lakes Maritime Heritage Center, the Sanctuary's 20,000 square foot, river-front headquarters. Visit

SUMMARY
=======
Thunder Bay National Marine Sanctuary and Underwater Preserve is a United States National Marine Sanctuary on Lake Huron, within the northeastern region of the U.S. state of Michigan. It protects an estimated 116 historically significant shipwrecks ranging from nineteenth-century wooden side-wheelers to twentieth-century steel-hulled steamers. There are a great many wrecks in the sanctuary, and their preservation and protection is a concern for national policymakers. The landward boundary of the sanctuary extends from the western boundary of Presque Isle County to the southern boundary of Alcona County. The sanctuary extends east from the lakeshore to the international border. Alpena is the largest city in the area.
Thunder Bay Shipwrecks: Joseph S. Fay
The dynamic Joseph S. Fay wreck site lies in two parts at 40 Mile Point Lighthouse, near Rogers City in the Thunder Bay National Marine Sanctuary. A long stretch of the bulk freighter's starboard side rests on the beach by the lighthouse, and its stern, rudder, keelsons, and port sides lay in 17 feet of water just offshore. The Joseph S. Fay encountered a strong gale in Northern Lake Huron and hit the rocks at 40 Mile Point, breaking its tow line to the schooner barge D.P. Rhodes and stranding the Fay near shore. The submerged portion is easily accessible by snorkel, shore dive, or kayak from 40 Mile Point Lighthouse, just look for the white NOAA shipwreck buoy! Parts of its iron ore cargo can still be seen on the wrecksite! To see artifacts and learn more history about this enormous bulk freighter, visit the 40 Mile Point Light Keeper's House, and the Great Lakes Maritime Heritage Center in Alpena.
