This section covers the trip from Incline Village right near Southwood Dr. all the way to the entrance of the historic George Whittell Thunderbird Lodge estate. This is a worthwhile tour if you can book it. Whittell at one time owned basically the entire east shore of Lake Tahoe. He was eccentric and colorful. Wild animals of various sorts were kept on the property much to the delight or dismay of his visitors. He had tunnels connecting different buildings that allowed him to make rapid exits or entrances as the need arose!
We also pass through the Sand Harbor Nevada State Park area that is scenic beyond description. Up far above Sand Harbor is the Flume Trail which I have biked many times. Looking down on Sand Harbor from above is a little like a view from a private plane I imagine.

In this segment we drive along Highway 28 heading south towards Highway 50. There's not a lot between the entrance of the Thunderbird Lodge and 50. George Whittell was the owner of the Thunderbird Lodge and owned most of the land on the east side of Tahoe. To this day, the east side has remained relatively untouched. As we climb up and away from the Lake, we head towards Highway 50, and pass by the Spooner Lake Recreation Area. In summertime this is a beautiful area for walking, hiking and biking. Marlette Lake is to the north of this area via a dirt road that turns upwards as you reach the summit. From the west side of Marlette, the world famous flume trail departs from the dam area. The water flume is long gone, but it was used for floating logs down the east side of the Sierra for shoring the mines in the Virginia City and Gold Hill regions. The mines there consumed huge quantities of these timbers. The last part of the journey involved the logs shooting downwards towards the valley to the east through a tunnel. To this day there's a road that departs this high region towards Tahoe called Tunnel Creek Road.
Spooner Lake in winter time becomes a haven for cross country skiers, snow shoeing, photographers and anyone looking for beautiful winter scenes.
The junction of Highway 50 and 28 is the further point away from Lake Tahoe in the entire 72 mile loop around the Lake. This intersection is about 1.8 miles from the closest shore.

As we drive along Hwy. 28, from the Hwy 267 turn off to Incline Village, we'll pass by Stateline at the north end of the Lake. Just inside the Nevada border are a few casinos that are nowhere nearly as large as the ones at the south end of the Lake. The largest casino/hotel in this area is actually the Hyatt over in Incline Village.
When you see the Biltmore casino to the left, know that there's an old fire lookout directly up the hillside that at one time was an important factor in spotting fires quickly. The lookout building is not there anymore but the location has been converted into a really nice concrete observation deck that has great views of the Lake. To get here, turn uphill immediately at the right hand end of the Biltmore parking lot (Resevoir Rd.). When you get to the corner, turn right and follow the road (Lakeview Ave.) uphill. Next you'll come to a fork- take the left heading on uphill (Tuscarora Rd. goes right). After a short distance you'll see the green forest service gate to the left. Park nicely so you're off the road and not blocking any of the local's driveways. The walk is only about 2/3mile or so up the hill to the old fire lookout location. There's a short nature trail that loops around the point directly below the observation deck. You pick up this trail .10 mile back from the forest service restroom facility at the top. The trails takes off and returns from the main road here.

We made it early enough to sand harbor today. You have to get there early other wise they close the parking lot. The water clarity here is way way clearer because the sand it more course so it falls quicker. We made some new friends... went swimming in the cold water and i jumped off some rocks. But the best part was we bought a skippi ball from this dude on the beach and it litterally the coolest toy to play with ever. Ok See you tomorrow bye. Find the Skippi ball at Skippiball.com

Lake Tahoe North Shore
The North side of Lake Tahoe, from Tahoe City, CA to Incline Village, NV is quite developed, with a lot of homes fronting the water. Traffic slows things down and there are no tight twisty sections to thrill a rider, but there are some great lake views and plenty of places to eat and stay along the way.

North Lake Tahoe Gets Hit with Nearly Two Feet of Snow
BROADCAST QUALITY MPEG 2 B-ROLL FOOTAGE - Available after 2:00pm PST, Feb 10, 2009.
STORY SUMMARY: (NORTH LAKE TAHOE, California/Nevada) A series of storms hit North Lake Tahoe early this week, bringing nearly two feet of fresh snow in time for the three-day holiday weekend ahead.
FOOTAGE INCLUDES: Current footage from North Lake Tahoe taken at Squaw Valley USA and locations around North Lake Tahoe, on Tuesday, February 10th, plus soundbites (see below).
SUPPORTING COPY: North Lake Tahoe is known for its big snow, and February is already shaping up to deliver on the regions annual 500 inches.
With nearly two feet hitting the ski resorts upper elevations and more powder expected throughout the week, ski conditions are at their best this season, just in time for Presidents Day weekend. And with the largest concentration of ski resorts in the country, skiers and boarders choose from more resorts, more runs and more terrain than anywhere else in the United States. Its easy to be a part of the buzz - just click into a pair of boards and head down your favorite run. The camaraderie is catchy.
Dont ski? No problem. Rent a pair of skates and take to Northstar-at-Tahoes ice rink. In between laps, roast smores and sip hot chocolate by the fire pits. Or, rent snowshoes and take a peaceful snowshoe trip along the shore of Lake Tahoe. Shop till you drop at the Village at Squaw Valley, where PlumpJack Sport Accessories & Kids just opened with fashion-forward looks for adults and kids. Or, prime your snowshoe muscles at the Hyatt Regencys Stillwater Spa in Incline Village, where their Lake Tahoe Stones massage will put you in vacation relaxation mode.
