Hi, my name is Lynn, and I am the Canadian Trade Office manager in Tianjin.
Tianjin covers an area of nearly 12,000 square kilometers and has a population of 15 million people. It was one of earliest Chinese cities open to the outside world and has always been one of the largest industrial, commercial, trade and financial centres in north of China. Tianjin is one of the four municipalities directly under the governance of China's central government, along with Beijing, Shanghai and Chongqing. Tianjin borders Beijing municipality as well as Hebei province. In recent years, Tianjin experienced important economic development at a faster rate than the national average.
Located only 150 kilometers from Beijing, Tianjin serves as a vital gateway between China’s capital and the Bohai Sea. It enjoys convenient transportation to other cities across China and around the world. For example, it takes only 33 minutes from Tianjin to Beijing by train, and a direct flight from Beijing to Vancouver takes around 10 hours. Convenient transportation is also a major advantage for Tianjin in terms of cargo shipment. The port of Tianjin is the fourth largest in the world in total throughput, and the International Airport is also one of China’s major cargo freight centres.
Tianjin has a well-established industrial base that is dominated by high-tech industry, and especially the ICT sector. Tianjin is one of the largest producers of mobile phones and related components in China. In all, it has eight pillar industries, which are: aviation and spaceflight, electronic information, automobile, metallurgy, biotechnology and modern medicine, petrochemical industry, new energy sources and modern manufacturing. Tianjin also has one of the most important and largest offshore oil reserves in China, which serves as a national base for the development of the oil industry.
The Binhai New Area is a major growth pole in Tianjin where more than 285 Fortune Global 500 companies have invested or established branch offices. The Binhai New Area covers the Tianjin Economic Technological Development Area, the Tianjin Port Free Trade Zone and the Tianjin Port. Tianjin enjoys a number of government incentives such as high-tech subsidies, foreign exchange management, and RMB cross-border transactions that increase profitability and simplify business operations for foreign companies.

Shocking devastation: Drone captures panoramic view of Tianjin blast site
Drone footage captures the shocking scale of devastation at the site of explosions in China's northern port city of Tianjin. At least 50 people have died and hundreds were injured when a warehouse for hazardous chemicals caught fire and exploded.
(This video has no sound.)
Scene at Epicenter of Tianjin Blasts
Rubble, ruins and burning debris evidence the devastation left behind in the blast site after Wednesday's massive explosions in north China's port city Tianjin.
A group of firefighters on Sunday headed into the epicenter of the blast site to conduct a search and rescue mission.
Upon entering the blast site, the firefighters found that some destroyed containers and products loaded inside were still burning, sending plumes of black smoke into air.
It is hard for the firefighters to make significant progress due to difficulties such as the scorching heat released by the burning debris, sharp metal shreds all over the ground and piles of deformed containers blocking their way.
Despite the adverse conditions, around 1,000 firefighters wearing hazmat suits are still combing the blast site in shifts to search for survivors.
The returning firefighters are required to go through a strict sterilizing processes due to the heavy chemical contamination in the area.

STORYLINE:
North Korea welcomed foreign investors to a new international trade show on Monday, in Rason (full name Rajin Sonbong Free Economic Trade Zone), which borders China and Russia.
The First Rason International Trade Exhibition showcases goods from 115 companies, more than a hundred of them North Korean, and a few foreign companies, according to Rason City authorities.
The foreign companies came from China, Russia, Italy, Australia, Taiwan, and the US, organisers said.
North Korea and China announced in June this year that the Rason Economic and Trade Zone would be a joint project between their two countries.
North Korea first established the Rajin Sonbong Free Economic Trade Zone in December 1991.
It is in the far northeastern corner of North Korea, where the borders of China, Russia, and North Korea meet.
After its establishment, the name of zone was shortened to Rason, incorporating the first letters of each of the two main cities in the zone, Rajin, and Sonbong.
The event drew the Chinese and Russian Consul Generals from nearby Chongjin, another of North Korea''s main northeastern cities.
North Korea is hoping to attract foreign investors to put their money in three main sectors - processing trade, transshipment, and tourism, according to the Vice Chairman of the Rason City Peoples'' Committee, Hwang Chol Nam.
From the 1990s, the United Nations Development Programme promoted Rajin Sonbong as part of a plan to bring investment to North East Asia, bridging Mongolia, China, Russia and Korea.
In January 2010, North Korea''s parliament gave Rason the status of a municipality.
This means that Rason is not designated as a provincial city, but shares the status of major cities in North Korea like capital Pyongyang, and regional centres Kaesong and Hamhung.
