National Ballet of China wins domestic audience with classic
Numerous renowned foreign ballet companies, such as the Bolshoi, Marinsky and Stuttgart all love to perform in China. Competition for the Chinese market has, in recent years, become fierce. So how is the National Ballet of China gearing up for this competition?
Don Quixote has been brought back, this time, in commemoration of the 75th anniversary of the birth of legendary dancer Rudolf Nureyev. He was the artistic director of the first production of Don Quixote at the National Ballet of China in 1985. Thanks to Rudolf, almost 20 years have gone by, the spirit of Don Quixote is still very much alive.
The errant knight appeared before a full house at the premiere of Don Quixote on Wednesday at Beijing's Tianqiao Theatre. The original ballet is the result of Austrian composer Ludwig Minkus and French dancer and choreographer Marius Petipa. However, it was Rudolf Nureyev who condensed the ballet into three acts and helped popularize it in the West with his own version of the ballet.
The National Ballet of China first adapted Don Quixote in 1985 under the tutelage of Nureyev, followed by a first revival 12 years later. With the second revival of this western classic a world-calibre team has been assembled.

Liaoning Chinese Ballet Company
The Last Emperor chronicles the incredible tale of China's last emperor Pu Yi. Born behind the gates of the Forbidden City into the imperial dynasty, Pu Yi started his life with a royal upbringing. At the tender age of 3 he was bestowed Emperor of China. The Emperor was ousted during the tumultuous period of the early Chinese Republic which resulted in his exile and he was then returned to China as puppet emperor Manchukuo under the Japanese rule.
Pu Yi was married to The Empress Wan Rong and then remarried later in life to civilian, Li Shuxian. After being granted an official pardon, Pu Yi lived the remainder of his life in China as an ordinary civilian under Mao Zedong until his death in 1967.
Pu Yi led an astonishing life and his story was adapted into a hugely successful biopic in 1987, starring John Lone as PuYi and with Joan Chen and Peter O'Toole. The ballet is based on Neville John Jrons book and inspired by the Bertolucci movie.
The Last Emperor, choreographed by Ivan Cavallari, is a European-orientated modern ballet performed by China's leading ballet company the Liaoning Ballet.
Since 1980 the Liaoning Ballet has made an outstanding contribution to ballet in China performing Swan Lake, Le Corsaire, La Fille mal gardée, Don Quixote, The Nutcracker, Cinderella, Giselle, Raymonda and Neapolitan.
The Last Emperor is an exquisite display of an incredible tale based on the true story of China's Last Emperor.

The National Ballet of China (NBC), known in China as the Central Ballet Troupe was founded on 31 December 1959. It is the mainland Chinese national ballet troupe.
The ballet company works from the Tianqiao Theater, this was specifically built for NBC in 1959, and it was renovated in 2001. This theater is one of a handful of such theaters in China that specialize in ballet and opera performances.
In 1954, the first ballet school in China, Beijing Dance School, was established, and in the following years ballets such as Swan Lake and Romeo and Juliet were performed. Later in 1959 the National Ballet of China was founded as the Experimental Ballet Company of the Beijing Dance School. Two persons made their mark on both the school and the company - Dai Ailian who was the principal of the school and one of the ballet company directors, and Pyotr Gusev who instituted the Russian training system that formed the technical foundation for the company.
During the Cultural Revolution, the company came under the control of Madame Mao and Dai Ailian was sidelined. In this period, Revolutionary Model dramas came to the fore, and the repertory of the company was eventually reduced to two sanctioned ballets - The Red Detachment of Women and The White Haired Girl. After the fall of the Gang of Four in 1976, Ailian returned as director until 1980 and then continued as artistic adviser. The ballet company began to reform and change direction with the classical Western ballets resurrected, and it also broadened its range to include more modern ballets from around the world.[3] In 1994, Zhao Ruheng (赵汝蘅), who had been a company dancer since 1959, took over as its artistic director. In 2009, Feng Ying was appointed artistic director of the company.
The Company:
The current director is Feng Ying (冯英), with Wang Quanxing (王全兴) as deputy, and Wang Caijun (王才军) the répétiteur. The company has its own orchestra, which is directed and conducted by Zhang Yi (张艺).
The company employs over 70 dancers. Many NBC dancers have won gold, silver and bronze medals at various international ballet competitions.
