Shibori Workshop - Arimatsu-Narumi Tie-Dyeing Museum
A visit to Arimatsu and the Arimatsu-Narumi Tie-Dye Museum. Arimatsu is a small Japanese town south of Nagoya famous for its shibori craftspeople. Shibori is a form of resist-dyeing where fabric is folded, tied, twisted or wrapped to create patterns. Visitors to the museum are able to take workshops in shibori techniques.
Arimatsu Shibori Tie-Dyeing
Located on the outskirts of Nagoya, a major city in central Japan, Arimatsu is a town that’s home to a famous craft tradition with a history of more than 400 years. Arimatsu Shibori is a kind of tie-dyeing, a method where parts of the fabric are tied, folded, or wrapped to leave patterns after dyeing. Arimatsu’s tradition is unique for the large number of techniques it uses – over 100. The craft has been mainly practiced by the town’s women, and today they are nurturing a new generation of young dyers who are taking Arimatsu Shibori in fresh directions.

Chayatsuji Kimono | Folding | Obiage
Obiage are one of those items that keep being bulky, especially shibori (tiedye) ones, no matter how you store them.
These method are my personal ones and allowed me to store them quite compact without compromising their looks as in creating unnecessary folds for example.
The better they are stored, the more beautiful they will look when you wear them!
As you might notice, in the last section where I fold a seafoam green obiage there are no instructions, this is because the obiage is simply folded over several times.

Arimatsu
Arimatsu is the stage that prospered in the Edo era.
There still leaves the feature of the old days and reminds me of an old appearance.
And Arimatsu is famous for tie-dyeing. The tie-dyeing is a traditional design of the Japanese kimono.
The tie-dyeing of delicate manual labor is our pride.

Arimatsu-Narumi Shibori DVD
In 1608 eight formerly farming families in Japan settled along a stretch of the Tokaido or 'eastern sea road' connecting Kyoto and Osaka to the new capital, Edo, now Tokyo. Taking up handicraft, they developed a peasant textile industry, initially mimicking the fine silk Shibori techniques found in Kyoto and ultimately developing their own methods and techniques for working with silk and cotton fabrics to create magnificent designs for summer and winter clothing and home decoration. Narumi joined in with the neighboring village of Arimatsu to create a cottage industry that would eventually grow to be known worldwide as Arimatsu-Narumi Shibori.
The Guild of Artisans of Arimatsu and Narumi in collaboration with Studio Galli Productions has released the most comprehensive overview of Shibori available in honor of reaching 400 years of continued production. Each part of the process is meticulously detailed in this sumptuous film, with narrative provided by acclaimed Shibori artist and scholar, Yoshiko Iwamoto Wada. Visit studios and workshops to see the Shibori processes demonstrated by the most expert artisans available today. Includes contemporary and historical examples of Shibori textiles hand made by local artisans.
Filmed in Arimatus and Narumi, Japan. Japanese, Spanish and English Sub-titles • Narration by Yoshiko Iwamoto Wada
