Rising 196m above the city, the Mount Victoria Lookout is a Wellington must-do. Head to the lookout and be rewarded with stunning panoramic views of Wellington city and harbour, and beyond.
Located right next to the central business district, you can drive all the way up, or take a walkway through the bush-covered Town Belt.
From the top, enjoy the views of Tinakori Hill, the Hutt Valley and Eastern harbour bays, Matiu/Somes Island and the Miramar Peninsula. Beyond are Baring and Pencarrow Heads and further to the right, Wellington’s Southern suburbs and Mt Mathews, Wellington’s highest point to the East.
Take a picnic with you, settle in on the hillside and relax while watching ferries and cruise ships sail into the harbour and planes fly in and out of the airport. This is also one of the best spots in the city for taking in a sunrise or sunset.

Te Ahumairangi / Tinakori Hill Lookout
Te Ahumairangi Hill Lookout (formerly Tinakori Hill) is a significant Wellington City landmark and part of the Town Belt. It is also important historically to Māori and European settlement. From the lookout, you can get amazing views across Wellington Harbour to Pencarrow and down to the south coast. There are a number of walking tracks from the lookout and a picnic area.
Before European settlement, the entire ridgeline was known as Te Ahumairangi. When Europeans settled, one of the first roads constructed ran along the foot of the range. The story goes that Māori workmen were annoyed that they had to work without (kahore - meaning 'none') stopping for lunch - or dinner ('tina').
The phrase stuck, although anglicised, and both the road and the ridge were called Tinakore, and later, Tinakori.
Te Ahumairangi Hill also had an important part to play in Wellington's communications history. At its peak, Wellington Radio's 45 transmitting aerials sprawled across the 38-hectare length of the hill. The receiving station, demolished in 1975, stood on the site of the lookout.
At its highest point, the ''hill' is 301m, and its rugged slopes encompass the suburbs of Wadestown, Thorndon, Wilton and Northland. The Beehive is at its base and the Botanic Gardens are built on its heavily modified lower south-eastern slopes.
One of the meanings of ''ahumairangi'' is ''whirlwind''. This poetic name was restored to the mountain in 2009 as part of the cultural redress package in the Port Nicholson Block (Taranaki Whanui ki te Upoko o Te Ika) Treaty settlement.

This is a short Documentary about the Shifting of the old Irish Pub from Molesworth Street over the Motorway to it's present Location in Tinakori Road. The heavy Building ( Kauri Wood Construction)
had to be cut in halve, bevor it was transported across the Hawkstone St. Fly over. It took almost 3 Month to get it there!
Please note the total absence of hard Hats by the Workers involved!
