Tlos is an ancient ruined Lycian hilltop citadel near the resort town of Kalkan in the Antalya Province of southern Turkey, some 4 kilometres northwest of Saklikent Gorge. Tlos is believed to be one of the most important religious Lycian cites and settlement on the site is said to begin more than 4.000 years ago.

After the mystic air of Tlos, we will go to a trout farm in Yaka village, a hand made heaven with full of water gardens and traditional restaurants. Lunch of fresh trout (or chicken) and a large selection of salads and mezzes will be waiting us here.
And the famous gorge! Saklikent! Saklikent gorge is the second longest gorge in Europe. We have to warn you before you get into the water! Its icy cold! You can jump into the water and explore the canyon by yourself or a private guide or if its too cold for you just relax and enjoy the moment on the riverside cafes with a nice hot tea or coffee. Ok! A cold beer will be good too!
After the long day, our coach will drive us back to Fethiye.

Seydikemer’in Yaka Mahallesi sınırları içerisinde yer alan tarihi Tlos antik kenti Unesco Dünya Mirası Geçici Listesi’nde olup, Likya Bölgesi olarak bilinen coğrafyanın en eski yerleşim alanlarından biridir. MÖ 14. yüzyıl Hitit belgelerinde Dlawa, Likya yazıtlarında ise Tlawa olarak kayda geçen antik kentin girişindeki akropol, doğaya hakim görüntüsü ile görenleri fazlasıyla etkiler.
Yaklaşık 500 metre yüksekliğindeki dik yamaçları ile doğal açıdan korunaklı akropol tepesinin çevresi, yer yer sur duvarları ile tahkim edilmiştir. Tlos kalesine çıkarken yamaçtaki kayalara oyulmuş tapınak mezarlar dikkat çeker. Bu mezarların en görkemlisi kanatlı at Pegasus’un, üç başlı canavar Chimera ile savaşırken resmedildiği Bellerephontes’e ait mezar anıtıdır.Girişinde iki sütun, üç bölümlü duvar, ortada süslemelerle bezenmiş kapı, iki yandan mezar odasına giden kapılar yapıya ilgiyi daha da artırır. Akropolün eteğinde birkaç oturma sırası, stadyum, hamam, tiyatro ve kilise kalıntıları yer alır. Kalenin altındaki düzlükte dokuz metre genişliğinde Lykia (Likya) duvar kalıntıları bulunmaktadır. Altı kemerli kapısı ayakta olan kent agorasının güneyinde Roma Dönemi surları görülmektedir. Tlos’un ayakta olan önemli yapısı tiyatrosudur. Bununla birlikte stadyum da büyük bir önem arz etmektedir. Tlos, Likya’nın spor kenti olarak da bilinmektedir.
Tlos, tarihi süreçte arkeolojik, kültürel, dini ve ekonomik açıdan bölgenin parlayan yıldızı konumundadır. Neolitik dönemden Demir çağa kadar kesintisiz devam eden yerleşimin izlerini taşır. Hatta Hititlerin yazılı kaynaklarında, (Anal, Yıllık) Tlos’tan ülke diye bahsedilmektedir. Hristiyanlık tarihi açısından da önemli bir merkez olan Tlos, Likya’nın en önemli piskoposluk merkezlerinden biridir. Bu dinsel önemi 12. yüzyıla kadar devam etmiştir. Ayrıca Osmanlı Dönemi izlerini de taşımaktadır. 18. yüzyılda Tlos, bölgenin ticaret yollarının kesişme noktası konumundadır.

Tlos. Likya'nın en önemli yerleşimlerinden biri olan Tlos Antik Kenti, Fethiye İlçesi’nin yaklaşık 42 km doğusundaki Yaka Köyü sınırları içerisinde kalmaktadır. Bölgenin en yüksek dağları olan Akdağlar'ın (Kragos) sarp batı yamaçlarında başlayan antik yerleşim, Eşen Nehri'nin getirdiği alüvyonlarla oluşmuş vadi düzlüğüne kadar ulaşır. Ayrıca güneydeki Saklıkent Kanyonu ile kuzey yönde bulunan Kemer Beldesi antik kentin egemenlik sınırlarını çizer. Savunmaya elverişli dağlık arazi yapısı ve Eşen Ovasına hakim konumuyla öne çıkan kentin antik komşuları arasında kuzeyde Araxa, kuzeydoğuda Oinoanda, kuzeybatıda Kadyanda, güneyde Xanthos, güneybatıda Pınara ve batıda Telmessos şehirleri yer almaktadır. Böylece Tlos yerleşiminin başka hiçbir Likya kentinde olmadığı kadar geniş bir coğrafyaya yayıldığı anlaşılır ki, bundan dolayı Hitit kaynaklarında Tlos için “şehir” yerine “ülke” ifadesi kullanılmıştır. Gerçi Tlos Antik Kenti için kullanılan ülke ifadesi şaşırtıcı gözükmektedir. Ancak ele geçen yazıtlardan antik kentin çok sayıda semt ve mahallelerden oluştuğu, çevresinde ise merkeze bağlı pek çok köy yerleşiminin bulunduğu bilinmektedir.

TURKEY: Tlos - ancient city ruins & rock tombs [HD]
Tlos was an important religious Lycian city. It was one of the six principal cities of Lycia (and purportedly one of the most powerful). Settlement is said to begin more than 4,000 years ago.
It is one of the oldest and largest settlements of Lycia (known as 'Tlawa' in Lycian inscriptions) and was eventually inhabited by Ottoman Turks, one of the few Lycian cities to continue it existence through the 19th century.
The influence of many cultures upon Tlos has resulted in an interesting collage of structures. At the foot of the hill is a Roman stadium and amphitheater. The acropolis was overbuilt by the Ottomans who constructed a fortress for the local governor Kanli Agi (Bloody Chief Ali).
Tlos is located near the town of Kalkan in the Antalya province of southern Turkey, some 4 kilometres northwest of Saklikent Gorge.
Rock-cut tombs are burial chambers that are cut into the living rock usually along the side of a hill. It was a common form of burial for the wealthy in ancient times in several parts of the world.
A sarcophagus is a funeral receptacle for a corpse, most commonly carved or cut from stone. Sarcophagi were most often designed to remain above ground, hence were often ornately carved, decorated or elaborately constructed.

The captivating ancient city of Tlos
Tlos FethiyeTlos is one of the largest and oldest settlements of ancient Lycia. Just a short trip away from Fethiye, this striking citadel is thought to be more than 4000 years old. Tlos was one of Lycian’s six principal cities - and allegedly, one of the most powerful. During the Roman era it was described as “the brilliant metropolis of the Lycian nation”.
As well as being inhabited by the citizens of Lycia, Tlos was settled by Romans, Byzantines and eventually, the Ottoman Turks. It is one of the few Lycian cities that has been continually inhabited until modern times.
The many cultures that lived here have resulted in a number of different structures. The most striking buildings are the acropolis and the fortress, which loom over the other buildings. On the slopes leading up to these structures are a number of Lycian sarcophagi and tombs cut into the hill face. One of these is the Tomb of Bellerophon, featuring a relief of the heroic Bellerophon riding the winged horse Pegasus. (Mythology has this impressive pair living at Tlos).
Tlos is located on the eastern side of the Xanthos valley, perched on an outcrop over a plateau where a village is located. Tlos’s west, north and northeastern borders end in sheer cliffs.
At the top, the impressive remains of an acropolis and Lycian fortress dominate the site. The fort was reinforced by the Ottomans during the many inter tribal battles that took place in the area.
Tlos Roman theatreAt the bottom of the hill you’ll find a Roman stadium with enough seating for 2,500 people - pretty impressive even by modern-day standards. Today, only the seats remain and the arena where gladiators once strode is now a farmer’s field.
Parallel to the stadium is a large ancient market hall complex, with a gymnasium to its right - complete with baths.
Rediscovery
Tlos was ‘rediscovered’ in modern times by British archaeologist Charles Fellowes in 1838. Since then excavation has almost been ongoing and in the last few years even more structures have been uncovered, allowing more insight into this incredible spot.
Today
Tlos co-exists with the modern village of Yaka. Surrounded by meadows and pomegranate trees, the site is extremely pretty and makes a very worthwhile day trip from nearby Fethiye. At the site entrance there’s a ticket hut and there are also cafes and a natural spring.
If you’re travelling from your Fethiye property you need to head towards Antalya on the D400. After around 25 minutes you’ll reach a junction with traffic lights where you should continue straight on towards Sakklikent. From there, follow the signs. The whole journey should take you around 45 minutes.
Tlos is one of those attractions that really highlights Turkey’s incredible history and culture. Anyone buying real estate in Fethiye is fortunate to have Tlos (and other similar attractions) right on their doorstep.
