This is Hiroshige's supreme masterpiece which is very famous Ukiyoe in the world.
This series is named Tōkaidō Gojūsan-tsugi(The 53 Stations of the Tōkaidō), consisting of 53 pieces of Ukiyoe.
Tōkaidō is a most major main road in Japan from Tokyo(new capital from Meiji era) to Kyoto(old capital until Edo era).
(Tokyo is To-Kyoto. To means East.
Kyoto was called Kyo until Edo era,
so East Kyoto becomes Tokyo.)

Playthrough of the first 10 minutes from the famicom exclusive 53 Stations of the Tokaido. This is my first time playing it so I make a lot of mistakes but I wanted to show that it's a fun side scrolling game that you don't need to know Japanese to play. Footage captured using a classic famicom and capture card.
Sur la route du Tokaido au musée Guimet (2° partie) : Hiroshige
À l’occasion de la récente acquisition d’un important album d’estampes du Tokaido ayant appartenu à Victor Segalen (1878-1919), cette exposition présente pour la première fois cette route autour de laquelle se croisent des estampes célèbres. De nombreux artistes japonais ont, en effet, illustré les grandes étapes scandant la route qui relie la capitale impériale Kyoto à Edo (Tokyo), capitale du Shogun.
Le Tokaido ou « route de la mer de l’Est » est le plus important des itinéraires (kaido) du Japon. Il est surtout connu en Europe pour être une route littorale pittoresque, plus exactement une des cinq routes du Gokaido, tout autant itinéraire touristique que tracé participant à la construction d’un espace politique dans le Japon de l’époque d’Edo (1603-1868).
La circulation sur cet itinéraire se développa rapidement à partir de l’époque de Kamakura (1185-1333), alors que la capitale était implantée dans cette ville non loin d’Edo (Tokyo). Il est vital à l’époque d’Edo, liant Kyoto, lieu de résidence de l’empereur, à Edo, capitale du shogun. Les sites remarquables et fameux s’égrènent tout au long du chemin : Odawara, Hakone, Mishima, Nissaka, la passe de Nakayama, Ie col de Suzuka et le célèbre sanctuaire d’Ise. Succession de points de vue spectaculaires, surplombant la plus grande partie du temps la mer, s’agrippant aux escarpements, partant à l’assaut de terrains montueux et difficiles, il offrait de remarquables plongées dans de vertigineux paysages. Les points de vue captivants, partout présents, y jouent des rivières, des auberges, des effets de trouées vers l’intérieur ou sur la mer. Le long de son trajet cinquante-trois relais furent aménagés ; autant que ce que compte d’estampes la célèbre série d’Hiroshige (1797-1858) à quoi l’on ajoute le pont Nihonbashi, étape de départ à Edo et celui de Sanjo à Kyoto, ultime point du voyage. En cheminant sur la route du Tokaido, le MNAAG propose à ses visiteurs de l’accompagner dans une entreprise littéraire, artistique et mémorielle.
Mémorielle d’abord, car c’est à l’occasion de l’acquisition d’un superbe album qui appartint à Victor Segalen (1878-1919) que l’idée de cette exposition est née. Il y a cent ans mourrait l’homme de lettres que l’on connaît plus comme passionné de Chine qu’amateur de Japon. On ne sait pas les circonstances qui mirent en présence un ensemble exceptionnel du « Tokaido processionnaire » de 1863 et le sinologue. Mais il est l’occasion de présenter une autre vision de cette route, plus attachée à dépeindre des situations et des personnages qui offrent un témoignage très intéressant des dernières années du shogunat. Entreprise artistique en premier lieu, c’est bien ce qu’est le Tokaido dans l’imaginaire collectif. C’est ce que montre « l’album Segalen » à travers ses près de 200 estampes et sa cohorte d’artistes : Utagawa Kunisada, Hiroshige II, Toyohara Kunichika, Kawanabe Kyosai, Utagawa Sadahide, etc. Comment, autour de cet ultime ensemble destiné à rappeler à l’empereur les bons services d’un shogun désormais sur le déclin, ne pas évoquer l’œuvre des grands devanciers sur cette route pittoresque et célèbre ? Hokusai bien sûr, Hiroshige plus que tout. La matière était vaste et c’est pourquoi nous avons décidé de nous concentrer sur la série de vue la plus célèbre, les Cinquante-trois stations du Tokaidō (Tokaidō gojusan tsugi) d’Utagawa Hiroshige. Le musée ne possède pas l’intégralité de la splendide édition dite Hoeido de 1833-1834. M. Jerzy Leskowicz, collectionneur hors pair et ami du musée, a bien voulu nous suivre sur le chemin et nous faire l’honneur de nous confier pour un temps un exceptionnel premier tirage complet de ses collections. Hiroshige nous sert de guide donc, non sans être accompagné d’estampes à peine moins connues et de guides de voyages de la fin de l’époque d’Edo, propriété du même collectionneur ; ils illustrent l’engouement autour de cette route.
Cet itinéraire littoral aux vues époustouflantes, aux nombreuses difficultés, suscita aussi une matière littéraire abondante dont l’œuvre fameuse de Jippensha Ikku. Le chemin a bien changé aujourd’hui, mais à travers les estampes la magie demeure inchangée et nous restitue un Japon qui toujours nous fait rêver. L’album du « dernier Tokaido » conclut une longue tradition. De nombreux artistes japonais ont illustré, sous des formes diverses, totalement ou partiellement, les grandes étapes scandant la route qui relie Kyoto, capitale impériale, à Edo (Tokyo), capitale du Shogun.

Climbing Mt. Fuji: the beauty, challenge, excitement, admiration, nature, weariness, amazement, fear
Mount Fuji is a symbol of Japan. The mountain contributes to Japan's physical, cultural, and spiritual geography.
Mount Fuji is the tallest mountain in Japan, standing at 3,776 meters (12,380 feet). It is an active volcano, sitting on a triple junction of tectonic activity: the Amurian plate (associated with the Eurasian tectonic plate), the Okhotsk plate (associated with the North American plate) and the Filipino plate all converge in the region beneath Mount Fuji. It is only 100 kilometers (62 miles) from Tokyo, Japan's capital and largest city. In fact, the last time Mount Fuji erupted, in 1707, volcanic ash fell on Tokyo.
Mount Fuji is the single most popular tourist site in Japan, for both Japanese and foreign tourists. More than 200,000 people climb to the summit every year, mostly during the warmer summer months. Huts on the route up the mountain cater to climbers, providing refreshments, basic medical supplies, and room to rest. Many people start climbing Mount Fuji at night, as better to experience sunrise from the summit—Japan, after all, is nicknamed the Land of the Rising Sun. The sunrise from Mount Fuji has a special name, Goraiko.
Mount Fuji has been a sacred site for practicers of Shinto since at least the 7th century. Shinto is the indigenous faith or spirituality of Japan. many Shinto shrines dot the base and ascent of Mount Fuji. Shinto shrines honor kami, the supernatural deities of the Shinto faith. The kami of Mount Fuji is Princess Konohanasakuya, whose symbol is the cherry blossom. Konohanasakuya has an entire series of shrines, called Segen shrines. The main Segen shrines are at the base and summit of Mount Fuji, but there are more than 1,000 across all of Japan.

Mount Fuji, located on Japan’s central island Honshu, is the nation’s highest volcano, which is still active today. With its imposing features of a height of 12,388 ft. and a circumference of 50 km at the base the mountain was recognized early in folklore and thought to host spirits.
The mountain was praised on the one hand, because of its rich water sources, and on the other hand, feared because of the danger of eruption. The Shinto religion in its maintenance as a mainly nature based religion found to worship in Fuji a mountain spirit or yama no kami: the goddess Konohana Sakuya Hime (“Princess Blossoms of the Trees“).
In the 7th century, the first monks climbed the mountain and Shinto shrines were installed. In the Heian period (794-1185) ascetics started living on the mountain. Since mountains not only were identified with deities, but also spirits of ancestors, priests served as mediators to provide prosperity for the people living beneath the mountains.
The priest Matsudai built a Shinto Sengen shrine at the summit in 1149 and encouraged the purifying practice of scattering water, salt, and rice wine into the crater, which is still done today.[5] The religious sect Shugendo, on the other hand, settled on Mt. Fuji and performed the nyubu ritual, which opened the mountain for entering, because they climbed to the summit once in each season of the year as a form for worship.
With the raise of Buddhism in Japan, the mountain was described as 'zenjo', purity of form and perfect for meditation to reach enlightenment. Therefore, since medieval times only access for religious purposes was admitted, which meant that only men could enter Mt. Fuji.

Mt. Fuji has long captured the imagination of writers and artists. The 8th-century CE poetry anthology Manyoshu has several poems dedicated to the mountain; it appears smoking at the end of the c. 909 CE 'Tale of the Bamboo Cutter' (Taketori Monogatari), the oldest surviving work of Japanese fiction, and it is the setting of many medieval folktales. The mountain features in several of the haiku poems by Matsuo Basho (1644-1694 CE) too.
More recently, Fuji was famously captured in the ukiyo-e woodblock prints of the noted artist Katsushika Hokusai (1760-1849 CE) who produced a series known as the 'Thirty-Six Views of Mount Fuji' (Fugaku Sanjurokkei). One of the set, Beneath the Wave off Kanagawa, is perhaps the most famous of all Japanese artworks. The artist Utagawa Hiroshige (1797-1858 CE) was even more enraptured and produced an even bigger set of prints, his 'One Hundred Views of Mount Fuji' (Fuji Sanjurokkei) as well as his 'Fifty-Three Stations of the Tokaido Road' (Tokaido Gojusantsugi). The mountain also appears on the current 1000 Yen banknote.

Satta Pass at Night (time lapse)
Satta Pass is a famous lookout for Mt. Fuji. Ukiyoe master, Hiroshige Utagawa drew the picture from there and included it in the Tokaido Gojusan-Tsugi (53 stations of the Tokaido).

ーまちづくり活動に携わるようになったきっかけは？
堀江さん
(地域密着の)スーパーっていう商売だったんで、やっぱり地域で商売している、事業している人は、地域に責任があるということを青年会議所に徹底的に言われてきた。そういうことが、まちづくりの活動に入る1番のキッカケかなと思います。

ー江戸時代から地域に愛されてきた「スーパー平野屋」だが、2018年に惜しまれつつも閉店。
ー旧東海道品川宿周辺まちづくり協議会
ー昭和63(1988)年に設立 平成7(1995)年「東海道品川宿周辺まちづくり計画書」を策定。地域が主体となった先進的なまちづくりの取り組みだった。
ー石畳舗装や電線類地中化などを実施したほか、建築物の外観、看板、のれんなどの景観を整備。
ー地域と融合する
ーゲストハウス品川宿について教えてください
渡邊さん
地域と融合するというコンセプトを持っていて、宿泊はシンプルにして、地域のコンテンツ(商店街・銭湯・お祭りなど)を含めて、お客様が魅力と思ってもらうような仕掛けを作る。というような感じ、地域融合ですね。
ーかつての宿場町「品川宿」にあり、品川駅・羽田空港からもアクセスがよく、国内はもとより外国人旅行客にも人気の宿。
ー国際交流と下町の風情を一緒に味わえるのが魅力。外国人向けの日本文化体験なども実施している。
ー親父と息子
ー渡邊さんから見て堀江さんは？
渡邊さん
使い倒すべき父親みたいな像ですね。僕以外にも、”堀江チルドレン”と呼ばれている若造がいるんですが、僕は長男ラインなんですね。みんなが狙ってるのは堀江さんの電話帳の電話番号で、(まちのキーマンに会いたいときは堀江さんに)1回目のアポをとってもらいます(笑) あとは自分たちで頑張り、たまに報告をして、ごはんを食べて、汗を流して返す、という親父的な感じです。かつ、一緒に遊ぶ相手でもあるので、半分友達、半分親父みたいな関係性を使い倒させていただいてます(笑)
ー堀江さんから見て渡邊さんは？
堀江さん
自分の息子がこういう風になったらいいなと、本当にそういう風に思っていた。こういう感じの息子が欲しいなぁって。まぁちょっと、いい加減だけど(笑)
ー偶然の出会い
渡邊さん
アメリカ留学のあと1年ほど旅館修業から帰ってきて、「堀江君に会いに行けばいいんじゃないか～とりあえず」みたいになって、物件を探しながらとりあえず歩いてみようとした時のファーストデイがここ(品川宿交流館 本宿お休み処)で会った日なんですよ。
堀江さん
すごい印象的だったよ、入ってきた時。ちゃんとネクタイして。どっかの企業の人だなぁって思ったよ。新規ビジネスでゲストハウスを考えてるのかなと。ゲストハウスはね、昔から品川でやりたいなぁって。
渡邊さん
あ、そうそう。なんか書いてありましたよ、「まちづくり計画書」に。

そうそう。

誰がやるんだ？って(笑)

だから、そういう意味で、すごくゲストハウスっていうのはこのまちに…
渡邊さん
タイミングが良かったんですよね。

よかったよね。
ー二人にとって、品川宿とは
渡邊さん
今までのストーリーをそのまま継続して、未来のストーリーまできれいに描けるまちづくりができる場所だと思ったんです。宿場町だし、どんどん外国人が僕は絶対増えていくと思ったし、それで人とか活気が残っていて、利便性もよくて、総合的に世界で、世界中のハブとなるようなまちってそういう傾向があるんですよね。

僕はね、ホント今でも驚くんだけど、こんな何にもないこのまちに、何しろ品川が好きな人が本当に多いんだよね。

根っから好きで、なおかつ自慢してんだよね。
ーいろんな人が来やすいまちに
渡邊さん
誰もやっていない変な事をするような人が来やすい土壌にしたいですよね。そういう人たちが店舗を借りやすい状況とかを作りたいなと。
堀江さん
もうリタイアした人の趣味でも、釣り竿だったら釣り竿にすごい凝ってる人とか。
渡邊さん
あー、それも良いですね！
ー行き詰ったら笑っちゃう
堀江さん
いつもそうだけど、みんなゲラゲラ笑ってるよなぁ。
渡邊さん
笑ってますよね。
堀江さん
個人的にどうしようもない時は、寝ちゃうね。
渡邊さん
何やってもしょうがないです。笑う、寝る、食う…ですね(笑)
―話しながら歩くお二人の間には、このまちの未来への夢があふれていました。
