Hiroshige’s 53 Stations of the Tokaido
February 6, 2016 — August 21, 2016
Muscarelle Museum of Art
Hiroshige’s 53 Stations of the Tokaido explores the most traveled road in old Japan with fresh eyes. This exhibition presents five distinct complete sets of Hiroshige’s The 53 Stations of the Tokaido Road never before displayed together. Centering on the fifty-five woodblock prints of Hiroshige’s famed first set, the Hoeido Tokaido (1832-1833, oban), the four additional series reveal the spectrum of Hiroshige’s visual poetry: Sanoki Tokaido (late 1830s, bound, chuban); Gyosho Tokaido (c. 1841-1842, aiban); Tsutaya Tokaido (c. 1850, bound, chuban); Upright Tokaido (1855, oban). Hiroshige’s Tokaido immerses the viewer in a panoramic view of the Tokaido and Hiroshige’s romance with the landscape of Japan. All works in this exhibition are on loan from the Ronin Collection of the Ronin Gallery, New York.

construída a mando do shogun Tokugawa Iyeasu.

Searching For Hiroshige Ando
This video is part of a playlist documenting a fun, day-long outing to Okitsu Japan. This trip was made in an effort to try and discover the real-life location which may have inspired the famous Edo-period wood-block print artist Hiroshige Ando in making his print for the village of Okitsu. This famous print depicts a pair of hefty sumo wrestlers rounding a corner near the mouth of the Okitsu river. This print was include in the artist's famous print series titled The 53 Stages of the Tokaido. Click on the following link to see the playlist titled Searching For Hiroshige Ando.

DYA717 August 25, 2016 Sunrise Tour Shizuoka to Mishima
At the Shizuoka shinkansen station, I met Keiko-san our guide and Mayumi-san another guide who is learning this new route and a young Canadian lady. That’s it, there were only 2 of us plus the 2 Sunrise guides on this tour today. We headed up the mountain and went to the Nihondaira Ropeway station. This ride is supposedly pretty during the fall colors in early December. We went down hill on a gondola on a 5-minute ride. Just outside the gondola off-loading area, there was a large 500+ years old sacred tree which is designated by the paper and rope attached to the tree.We then climbed a few hundred steep stairs to the Kunozan Toshogu Shrine. There are dozens of Toshogu Shrines throughout Japan, including Nikko, but this is the original and is designated as a national treasure. This shrine is dedicated to Shogun Tokugawa Ieyasu, the 1st Tokugawa Shogun. He died in 1616 at the age of 75 and his son built this shrine in 1617. Ieyasu is entombed in a monument at the top of this Shrine. We caught the gondola back up and then when down the street to a tea establishment. On a clear day you can see Mt. Fuji but it was cloudy today and we couldn’t see much of Fuji-san. We got to see a tea plantation and sampled brewed green tea. Was lunch time about now so we drove down the hill to the port S-Pulse Mall. S-Pulse is a professional soccor team for Shizuoka. Shizuoka has around 40,000 Brazilians (I think I heard correctly) who really support that soccor team. I opted out for the tour lunch so I went on my own to the food court and had some stir fried noodles w/chicken. ONO!
After lunch we went to the Tokaido Hiroshige Museum which features woodblock printing developed by the guy Hiroshige. Among his famous sets of woodblock prints are the 53 stations of the Tokaido Road. Sorry no photos allowed. While waiting for the bus, we walked into this 200+ years old building which used to be an indigo dying place. The dying vats haven’t been used since after WW II but is still on display along with other old artifacts.
We then drove to the 2nd station up Mt. Fuji, hoping along the way to get a glimpse of Fuji-san. No dice – too cloudy today. We got to the souvenir shop at the base of Fuji-san but too cloudy. We then drove down to Mishima train station where the tour ended.
Podróż do Edo / Journey to Edo
Podróż do Edo. Japońskie drzeworyty ukiyo-e z kolekcji Jerzego Leskowicza
Muzeum Narodowe w Warszawie
Projekt wystawy w Muzeum Narodowym w Warszawie prezentuje wyjątkową na skalę europejską prywatną kolekcję Jerzego Leskowicza najsłynniejszych prac wybitnych japońskich artystów ukiyo-e – Kitagawy Utamaro, Tōshūsaia Sharaku i Utamaro Hiroshige. Ponad trzysta prac tworzy barwną panoramę życia dawnej Japonii u schyłku osiemnastego i pierwszej połowy dziewiętnastego wieku.
Założeniem jakie przyjęliśmy było pokazanie kolekcji drzeworytów w otoczeniu nawiązującym do japońskiego wnętrza. Motywem przewodnim stały się podziały poszczególnych sal nawiązujące do parawanów shoji. Zwiedzający wystawę może odbyć podróż po dziewiętnastowiecznej Japonii, przemierzając sale od starej stolicy Edo przez dwa główne szlaki komunikacyjne, Tōkaidō (droga nadmorska) i Kiso Kaidō (droga górska), do nowej stolicy Kioto.
