Beautiful Cemetery of Tokeiji Temple, Kamakura | A Taste of Japan #16
A Taste of Japan #16 - Tokeiji Temple, Kamakura, Japan
Tokeiji Temple is an unusual Buddhist temple. It's actually a former nunnery and the temple to go to for women who want protection and a divorce from their husbands. Located in northern Kamakura near Kita-Kamakura Station, Tokeiji Temple has a beautiful cemetery. Quite possibly the most beautiful cemetery I've ever seen. Stunningly green, Tokeiji Temple is a peaceful, yet other-worldly place in the ancient city of Kamakura.

A Taste of Japan #17 - Jochiji Temple, Kamakura
After visiting Tokeiji, we went to Jochiji Temple in Kamakura. Only 100 years ago, it was rundown, and in terrible condition. Most of the temple is newer construction. It is number 4 of the 5 major Zen Buddhist temples in Kamakura. It is located south of Kita-Kamakura station. At Jochiji Temple, you can rub Hotei's belly and finger. Hotei is the god of happiness.

Description

There are many highlights such as Kamakura’s sole Chinese-style Shoromon gate, statues that have been designated by Kanagawa Prefecture as Important Cultural Properties, and the statue of Hotei-son, one of the Seven Lucky Gods. There is a deep feeling of being inside a mountain with a distinct atmosphere.

Great Buddha of Kamakura Japan | Hachimangu Shrine | Hasedera Temple | Japan ANNventures
Welcome to Japan Annventures
Things to do in Kamakura?
In this video you will see The Great Buddha in Kamakura Japan, The Hachimangu Shrine and the Hasedera Temple
The Great Buddha of Kamakura (鎌倉大仏, Kamakura Daibutsu) is a bronze statue of Amida Buddha, which stands on the grounds of Kotokuin Temple. With a height of 11.4 meters, it has long been the second tallest bronze Buddha statue in Japan, surpassed only by the statue in Nara's Todaiji Temple and some recent creations.
The statue was cast in 1252 and originally located inside a large temple hall. However, the temple buildings were destroyed multiple times by typhoons and a tsunami in the 14th and 15th centuries. So, since the late 15th century, the Buddha has been standing in the open air.
The Great Buddha is located a 5-10 minute walk from Hase Station.
Admission fee : 300yen
Hours:
8:00 to 17:30 (until 17:00 from October to March)
The Hachimangu Shrine
Tsurugaoka Hachimangu (鶴岡八幡宮, Tsurugaoka Hachimangū) is Kamakura's most important shrine. It was founded by Minamoto Yoriyoshi in 1063, and enlarged and moved to its current site in 1180 by Minamoto Yoritomo, the founder and first shogun of the Kamakura government.
The shrine is dedicated to Hachiman, the patron god of the Minamoto family and of the samurai in general. The deified spirits of the ancient Emperor Ojin who has been identified with Hachiman, Hime-gami and Empress Jingu are enshrined at Tsurugaoka Hachimangu Shrine.
Tsurugaoka Hachimangu Shrine can be reached from Kamakura Station either through the busy Komachi-dori shopping street, or along the Dankazura, a pedestrian path in the center of Wakamiya Oji Street that is lined with several hundred cherry trees. Via either route, the walk from Kamakura Station to the shrine takes about 10-15 minutes.
Hasedera Temple
Hasedera (長谷寺) is a temple of the Jodo sect, famous for its eleven-headed statue of Kannon, the goddess of mercy. The 9.18 meter tall, gilded wooden statue is regarded as one of the largest wooden sculpture in Japan and can be viewed in the temple's main building, the Kannon-do Hall. According to legend, it was carved from the same tree as the similarly tall Kannon statue worshiped at the Hasedera Temple in Nara Prefecture.
Adjacent to the main hall is the Kannon Museum, a small museum that requires an additional entrance fee. It exhibits some more of the temple's treasures, including Buddhist statues, a temple bell and a picture scroll. Explanatory signs are in Japanese, and an English pamphlet with basic explanations is available. On the opposite side of the main hall stands the Amida-do Hall with an almost three meter tall, golden statue of Amida Buddha.
Hasedera is located a five minute walk from Hase Station, the third station from Kamakura along the Enoden railway line. The Enoden is a streetcar-like train that connects Kamakura with Enoshima and Fujisawa. Its terminal station in Kamakura is located just next to JR Kamakura Station.
Admission Fee: 400yen

JR Kamakura (鎌倉駅) and Kita Kamakura (北鎌倉駅) Stations, Kamakura, Japan
Kamakura district in Kanagawa prefecture is famous for it's temples and shrines. Both JR Kamakura (鎌倉駅) and JR Kita Kamakura (北鎌倉駅) stations are located about two minute train ride (probably less than a mile) from each other.
There is a narrow street called Kamakura Kaido (鎌倉街道), between these two stations, right next to the train track. On this street, there are many great temples like Kenchoji.
Most visitors to Kamakura get off at either one of these stations and walk between the stations, while enjoying the tourist attractions between them. Obviously most prominent attractions are near JR Kamakura station, so I suggest you to get off at JR Kita Kamakura station, see the temples between Kita Kamakura and Kamakura station, walking towards Kamakura. Then finish your itenarary with the temples in Kamakura.
Enjoy!!!
