In Japan, a new road and tunnel link (the Aqualine) now allows people to cross Tokyo Bay in a third of the time it previously took on congested roads through Tokyo. The 10-kilometre tunnel which links Kisarazu City and Kawasaki City, is the world's longest underwater vehicle tunnel. And the Tokyo Bay Aqualine is also a pleasant way to cross one of the world's busiest waterways. The entrance to the underwater tunnel is a man-made island known as Umi Hotaru which has become a popular tourist spot.

アクアライン Tokyo Bay Aqualine express bus from tokyo to chiba
1997 saw the completion of the Tokyo Wan Aqua Line bridge and tunnel, which burrows under and rises across Tokyo Bay between Kisarazu (Chiba prefecture) and Kawasaki (on the Tokyo side). At ¥4000 for a passenger car, almost nobody uses the tunnel though, and it's bleeding government money. You can take highway buses through the tunnel and over the bridge from Tokyo Station, Shinagawa, Haneda Airport, Kawasaki and Yokohama stations for up to ¥1500 one way to Kisarazu.

Built on a 650m #island (Kisarazu artificial island) surrounded by 360º of water, the Umihotaru #Parking Area is a rather unusual parking area, even by international standards.
It stands five levels tall, with parking on levels 1 through 3, and commercial facilities on levels 4 and 5.
This is the only shopping mall on the sea where you can enjoy #panoramic #360º views of Tokyo Bay, as well as many shops, restaurants and services.

Umihotaru-Kisarazu things to do
There is not a whole lot to do in #Kisarazu. However the number one activity is to visit Umihotaru which is the midway point on the bridge which crosses #Tokyo Bay from the Chiba side at Kisarazu to #Kawasaki which is near Yokohama. Umihotaru is the midway point of the roadway bridge before it turns into a #tunnel underneath Tokyo #Bay. The best thing is the 360 degree view from the middle of Tokyo Bay from Mount #Fuji to the south to Tokyo to Chiba looking towards not eat airport. If it is windy, you can get a clear view of Mount Fuji. But you have to go in the morning before it gets too hazy.
There isn't a lot to do at the Umihotaru other than eat and shop for food item gifts. There is a arcade place that sells toys but otherwise there is only good gift shopping and some trinkets like keychains. There are a lot of lunch places to eat as well as coffee shops and ice cream shops.
To get there from the Kisarazu side, go to the Kisarazu train station and take the bus at stop #7. Be sure to take the Umihotaru bus (not the Kawasaki bus). Cost was 770 yen one way. On the return there is a bus stop on the east side parking lot. Be sure to take the bus going to Kisarazu. There are no signs in #English. I just asked a police officer for help.

13. Transbay Tube
The Transbay Tube is a 5.8-kilometer tunnel that carries four trans-bay lines under California’s San Francisco Bay between the cities of San Francisco and Oakland. The tunnel features a maximum depth of 41 meters below sea level and is a monumental time-saver to the cities fighting traffic.

With an overall length of 14 kilometers, it includes a 4.4-kilometer bridge as well as a 9.6-kilometer tunnel that runs beneath the bay.

Running 76.6 kilometers long, workers spent painstaking hours in the depths of the earth’s mantle where alarming discoveries were made. Relics from the Byzantine-era along with countless other 8,000-year-old finds were recovered from the site of the European tunnel terminal in 2005.

4. The Øresund Bridge
Merely by looking at the structure one can grasp the mastery that went into the Oresund Bridge— a combined railway and motorway bridge across the Oresund strait between Sweden and Denmark. The cabled-stayed structure runs 8 kilometers from the Swedish coast to Peberholm.
3. Seikan Tunnel
Spanning a total length of 53.8 kilometers with 23.3 of those kilometers under the ocean floor, the anomaly travels beneath the straight to connect Aomori Prefecture on Honshu Island with Hokkaido Island. Also known as Seikan Zuido, the tunnel’s concept was birthed in 1940 and construction wasn’t completed until almost 50 years later.
2. Gotthard Base Tunnel
After 20 grueling years of construction, the Gotthard Base Tunnel was completed in 2016 and swiftly stole the title from the Seikan in Japan as the world’s longest tunnel. The deepest-ever constructed, this submerged passageway runs 57.5 kilometers under the snow-capped Swiss Alps. 8,000 feet deep at its max, the tunnel required 31 million tons of displaced rock.

The Trans-Tokyo Bay Highway, also known as the Tokyo Bay Aqualine, is a 15.1 km marine crossing through the middle of Tokyo Bay connecting Kawasaki City in Kanagawa Prefecture with Kisarazu City in Chiba Prefecture on the Boso Peninsular. With the journey from Kawasaki to Kisarazu now taking just 15 minutes, the highway plays a vital economic role in integrating these two areas of prime industrial importance. The areas are otherwise separated by a 100-km journey through the heart of metropolitan Tokyo, so the Aqualine also eases traffic congestion in the broader metropolitan road network.
The Aqualine consists of a 9.5-km shield tunnel (the Tokyo Bay Tunnel) and a 4.4-km bridge from an artificial island to the Kisarazu landing. The tunnel diameter is the world's largest for an underwater shield tunnel used for motor vehicle traffic. The cross-section diameter to the outside of the segment lining is 13.9 m, and the inner diameter of 11.9 m provides for two lanes of traffic in both directions.
NCC designed the segment lining structure for the Aqualine tunnel. The design presented particular challenges due to the need to safeguard the tunnel against large ground and hydraulic pressures and prevent seawater leakage. Moreover, the seismic activity of the area meant that such protection needed to be earthquake proof. The long-bolt system was therefore used for assembling the lining segments, and special sealing measures were taken along the segment joints to make the tunnel lining impervious to seawater.

The cash toll for a single trip on the Aqua-Line is ¥3000 for ordinary-size cars (¥2400 for kei cars); however, using the ETC (electronic toll collection) system, the fare is ¥2320 (¥1860 for kei cars). The ETC toll is reduced to ¥1000 on Saturdays, Sundays and Holidays. In general, tolls for usage of the Aqua-Line in either direction are collected at the mainline toll plaza on the Kisarazu end.
