Adventures in Scotland part 2: Up Helly Aa
PART 1:
It was January 28th when this was uploaded (even if YouTube's servers in the USA think it was still the 27th). In other words, the last Tuesday in January. The day the people of Lerwick celebrate their Norse heritage by parading round the streets in the evening, carrying burning torches to throw at a wonderfully crafted longship when all is said, done and sung.
On the day 2014's Jarl Squad makes this symbolic journey round the streets of Lerwick, what better way is there to experience Up Helly Aa for yourselves - if you're not actually there - than by reliving the events of 2013?
Some of the events involving the Jarl Squad leading up to this spectacular parade - slightly compromised by the rain, but then it is 60 degrees north in winter - are also covered, such as some of the proceedings in the morning at Toll Clock shopping centre and outside the Royal British Legion. The rest of our day was spent exploring the interesting parts of Lerwick, uncovering Shetland's lengthy history, heritage and food.
The YouTube user moorit007 has previously uploaded extensive coverage of Up Helly Aa 2013 recorded on a phone - the picture quality from a proper camera is much better, obviously - but we didn't go to the (very expensive) halls afterwards, and moorit007 did. Look at that channel if you want to see the entertainment that was on offer in one of the halls, provided by the guizer squads, for 30 quid a head - and also if you want to see a video of the full proceedings in Toll Clock.
Also, by the end of this feature-length video, you'll know the Up Helly Aa Song and the Galley Song inside out.

The current Lerwick celebration grew out of the older yule tradition of tar barrelling which took place at Christmas and New Year as well as Up Helly Aa. Squads of young men would drag barrels of burning tar through town on sledges, making mischief.[1] Concern over public safety and levels of drunkenness led to a change in the celebrations, and saw them drawing inspiration from the islands' Viking history.[2] After the abolition of tar barrelling around 1874–1880, permission was eventually obtained for torch processions. The first yule torch procession took place in 1876. The first torch celebration on Up Helly Aa day took place in 1881. The following year the torchlit procession was significantly enhanced and institutionalised through a request by a Lerwick civic body to hold another Up Helly Aa torch procession for the visit of Alfred, Duke of Edinburgh.[3] [4] The first galley was introduced and burned in 1889.[5] The honorary role of the 'Jarl' was introduced to the festival in the early twentieth century.[6] In reality, despite many sources claiming these ancient origins, the festival, and many like it, were products of Victorian do-goodery. The Lerwick Up-Helly Aa was first established by the Total Abstinence Society in the 1870s to give the young men who would otherwise drink themselves silly something to do. The name itself derives from Upholiday, the lowland Scots word for Twelfth Day, and was brought by them to the Shetland Islands in the 19th century.

Scalloway Fire Festival Calendar Slideshow
Comical Scalloway Fire Festival Calendar 2020 out-takes and extras. Each squad was tasked with coming up with their own photographic idea for one page in a fundraising calendar for the Scalloway Fire Festival. Photographs were taken during summer 2019 by Mark Burgess and Carina Newell at a variety of locations around Scalloway and further afield in Shetland. The end result is a fantastic collection of really diverse images, ranging from highly artistic to the downright comical. Many, many hours of work went into creating some of the setups and editing some of the more elaborate images. This video is a short compilation of some the photos that aren't in the calendar, and the fun that was had in making it - with a brief glimpse of the calendar at the end. The calendar is for sale in local shops.

The present Lerwick celebration grew out of the much older yule tradition of tar barrelling which took place at Christmas and New Year as well as Up Helly Aa. After the abolition of tar barrelling around 1880, permission was eventually obtained for torch processions. The first yule torch procession took place in 1876. The first torch celebration on Up Helly Aa day took place in 1881. The first galley was burned in 1889. The festival now involves a procession of up to a thousand guizers in Lerwick and considerably lower numbers in the more rural festivals, formed into squads who march through the town or village in a variety of themed costumes. The procession culminates in the torches being thrown into a replica Viking longship or galley.
