The Tollygunge Club, Kolkata
The Tollygunge Club, Kolkata, is the only Country Club of its kind in India and ranked amongst the top 20 Clubs of the world. It is spread over a hundred acres with a Club House that is over 220 years old.
The Tollygunge Club is located in the southern part of Kolkata, only 9 Kms from the centre of the city.
The Tollygunge Club was founded in 1895 as a meeting ground for British Merchants and bankers, who sought refuge from the encounters of a sweltering city to carve out a niche for themselves in an otherwise alien environment. Where the 'Tollygunge' scores over other clubs set up during those times, is its identity as the first country club of its kind in India with a unique collection of flora and fauna, some of which are rare enough to be found in a botanical garden.
Beginning as an equestrian institution devoted mainly to riding and all manner of equestrian sport, it now boasts a range of facilities rarely found under a single roof. In this and many other respects, 'Tolly' as it has affectionately come to be called, has few equals in India and indeed, in the world.
It offers facilities for golf, tennis, squash, indoor and outdoor swimming, riding and amateur equestrian sports. There is also a well-equipped and extensively used gym with professional instructors. The Club has a bridge room, a billiards room, a pro-shop, a well-stocked library, cyber cafe, unisex salon and herbal ayurvedic centre.
Sports apart, the Club offers members and guests a wide range of entertainment the year round from open-air theatre to music and dancing. Excellent cuisine is available at its restaurants, lawns, pavilions and well-stocked bars. There are also a pastry hut and an ice-cream parlour.
The club has 67 newly furbished, air-conditioned suites and residential rooms, each with an attached bath, while separate conference and banqueting facilities offer a choice of venues accommodating between 25 and 600 people. There is abundant provision for parking. A country club that is truly an oasis of greenery and quietude in the midst of Kolkata's bustling southern residential district, the hallmark of Tolly is its warm, leisurely and friendly atmosphere.

TRANSCRIPT: The other place that left a big impression on me that we lived for a long time... We moved back to Baltimore, we lived in Texas, we moved... But the place that probably left the biggest impression on me was India. We lived in Calcutta for a couple of years. And that was when I was kind of junior... Probably eighth grade maybe. So 14, 15.
And India, again, was an incredibly exotic place but we were in the middle of a city in Calcutta, it was extraordinary, it was rickshaw drivers and every morning, literally... I mean, there were people that lived on the streets, every morning there was a truck that came and picked up the bodies of the people that had died during the night. And it was very, very poor. Lots of refugees from the country. All kinds of cultures of... I remember being struck by, you know, in America we think of ourselves as diverse but when you go into the bathroom everyone does the same thing. In Calcutta when you go into the bathroom everybody would do something different. It was...
And there were Hindu idols and malas calling people to prayer. And we went to a Christian church. But it was the most multi-cultural place I've ever been to. But again just so alive and so exciting. And going through the market places and again I felt perfectly safe wandering around the whole city. I really felt like the city was mine. I would ride the tram cars or take rickshaws and walk. And I just loved that city.
Again, the smells, completely different than the smells of Africa, but spices and of course humans. The people smell different. The Indians were very physically clean, even the people living on the streets would bathe every day in the water pumps.
And there we also ran into kind of a different kind of racism which is the British were there. And most of the swimming clubs they wouldn't allow Indians in the swimming clubs, only the British were allowed. And so the Calcutta Swimming Club or... Which we would go to sometimes with our friends. At that time wouldn't allow Indians. Maybe that one would, I don't know, a lot of them wouldn't. But so we joined the Tollygunge Club, because it did allow Indians. It was one of the only swimming clubs that allowed... Swimming Clubs were very important because it was very hot and we didn't have any air conditioning. And... But then we did... But then they decided that... I've got it backwards, no. Maybe it's the Tollygunge Club didn't allow Indians and the Calcutta Swimming Club did. I think that's right. We joined that. But the Tollygunge Club... we discovered this because when we applied they needed to meet us and kind of look us over before allowing us into the club. And we figured out that they were looking us over to make sure we weren't Indian.
So we didn't join that club that was closest to our house, we joined the Calcutta Swimming Club which did allow Indians, which was much farther away but had a better pool anyway.

Jackals at Tollygunge Club, Kolkata, India.AVI
At night, the jackals would begin 'singing' - from just after sundown until about sunrise. They would do this almost every hour on the hour. Took a bit to figure out how to block out the sound at night so sleep was possible.
This video does not contain pictures of the jackals - it is just an audio track taken late at night - approximately 3:15am. Watch the video, not for the pictures, but for the sound of wild animals who inhabit space at a recognized golf club.
This video belongs to J. and C. Mohareb and is NOT to be copied, or duplicated in any way - using any video or other computer formats.
Lake : Tollygunge
Tollygunge (Bengali: টালিগঞ্জ) is a locality of South Kolkata. It is flanked by the Eastern Railway south suburban line to the north, Lake Gardens and Golf Green in the east, the Pashchim & Purba Putiaries in the south, and Behala in the west.
Tollygunge is named after Major William Tolly, the Ferdinand de Lesseps of Calcutta, who in 1775-76 started a project to excavate and dredge the Tolly's Nullah (Adi Ganga) (also named for him) as a passage for the people of East Bengal and Assam to Calcutta. He was also granted a license to collect tolls from the passing boats and permitted to open a gunj or market on the eastern bank of the nullah by the British East India Company.
The dream project of Major Tolly became fully alive in 1776 and subsequently it was opened to navigation in 1777. Since then, this 17 mile long canal is known as Tolly's Nullah and the market of Major Tolly as Tollygunge which was somewhere near Tollygunge Road on the eastern bank of this Nullah. Now a large area on both sides of the Nullah bears the name Tollygunge.
Today, Tollygunge is one of the premium localities of Kolkata. Tollywood, the centre of the Bengali film industry, is at Tollygunge.
It is one of the most rapidly developing areas of Kolkata[citation needed].
