The Live Tomb of Azimunnisa Begum: Mursidabad by Tourist Destination
Azimunnisa Begum, daughter of Murshid Quli Khan and wife of the second Nawab of Bengal, Shuja-ud-din. At a distance of about 220 kms by road from Kolkata, India lies the old city of Murshidabad. Murshidabad has been situated on the southern banks of the river Bhagirathi, a tributary of the river Ganges.
Here lies the body of Azimunnisa Begum, daughter of Murshid Quli Khan, ruler and founder of Murshidabad. This mausoleum, also known as ‘Zinda Kabr’ (Live Tomb) was built in her memory. Azimunnisa Begum was popularly known as Kalji-Khaki or Liver Eating begum. Myth has it that once Azimunnisa fell seriously ill and as per doctor’s prescription she used to take a medicine prepared from the liver of human child. This medicine was registered to her secretly, but even after she recovered from her sickness, she developed an addiction towards this medicine, resulting in killing quite a lot of children during that time. Once his father came to know about this, she was buried alive under this mosque, so that every person who visits this place will walk over her grave. Another version of the story says that it was not her father but her husband Shuja-ud-din who was ultimately fed up with her and got her buried alive. The tomb was built with the grave lying below the stair.
The mosque was built here in 1734 in the architectural pattern of the bigger and much more famous Katra Mosque of Mursidabad. There is an inscriptional slab in the eastern entrance to the mosque. The place is ornate with a well maintained garden and the resting place or the tomb of the princess is below the entrance stairs. However, it was destroyed in a massive earthquake, and all that now remains of this once grand structure is a doorway. But looking at the remains you can imagine how magnificent architecture it would have been.

Azimunnisa Begum was the daughter of Nawab Murshid-Quli Khan and the wife of Nawab Suja-ud-Daulah. People believe that she used to eat the livers of children in order to get cured from a disease. When her husband came to know about it, he buried her alive at this place. However, some scholars totally disagree from this story. They believe, she was just sent away from Murshidabad as a punishment and later on when she died she was buried here. Now apart from her grave one can see a beautiful garden on top of the grave and the remains of a mosque.

Syed Mir Jafar Ali Khan Bahadur 1691 – 5 February 1765 was the first dependent Nawab of Bengal with support from the British East India Company. He was the second son of Sayyid Ahmad Najafi. His rule is widely considered the start of British imperialism in India and was a key step in the eventual British domination of vast areas of the subcontinent. Mir Jafar served as the commander of Bengali forces under Siraj ud-Daulah, the Nawab of Bengal, but betrayed him during the Battle of Plassey and succeeded him after the British victory in 1757. Mir Jafar received military support from the British East India Company until 1760, but failed to satisfy various British demands. In 1758, Robert Clive discovered that Jafar had made a treaty with
the Dutch at Chinsurah through his agent Khoja Wajid. Dutch ships of war were also seen in the River Hooghly. Circumstances led to the Battle of Chinsurah. British company official Henry Vansittart proposed that since Jafar was unable to cope with the difficulties, Mir Qasim, Jafar's son-in-law, should act as Deputy Subahdar. In October 1760, the company forced him to abdicate in favor of Qasim. However, Qasim's independent spirit and plans to force the East India company out of his dominion led to his overthrow, and Jafar was restored as the Nawab in 1763 with the support of the company. Mir Qasim however refused to accept this and went to war against the company. Jafar ruled until his death on 5 February 1765 and lies buried at the Jafarganj Cemetery in Murshidabad, West Bengal, India.
