In which John introduces you to quite a lot of Chinese history by
discussing the complicated relationship between the Confucian scholars
who wrote Chinese history and the emperors (and empress) who made it.
Included is a brief introduction to all the dynasties in Chinese
history and an introduction to Confucius and the Confucian emphasis on
filial piety, the role the mandate of heaven played in organizing
China, and how China became the first modern state.

The Deadliest Civil War Ever | Taiping Rebellion (1851-1864) | History of China
Consider Supporting HoH:
For little under fourteen years, the Taiping Rebellion waged over China. Seventeen provinces were ravished and the estimated loss of life is between 20 and 25 million. It is the deadliest civil war, one of the deadliest wars ever, and the largest conflict of the 19th century. The Qing dynasty, however, was not only faced with the Taiping rebellion during this time but with several other (the Panthay, Dungan and Nian rebellion) rebellions throughout the country and the second opium war. It is one of the bloodiest episodes in Chinese history, which…really says something. and it raises an interesting question, how did the Qing manage to stay in power during this carnage?
About the 'End of Empire' series:
China's Qing Dynasty was faced with internal rebellions, widespread corruption and natural disasters throughout the 19th century. Furthermore, it suffered humiliating defeats at the hands of Western powers and Japan. It makes one wonder how the Qing Dynasty managed to stay in power during this time. The Taiping rebellion will be the start of this series about the downfall of the Qing Dynasty. Over the course of several weeks, I will delve into the major events that happened in China from 1850 to 1911 and attempt to understand and shed light on the last death throes of the once mighty Qing dynasty.

China's Hundred Days' Reform and Cixi's coup d'état (1898) | History of China
Consider Supporting HoH: During the closing decade of the 19th century, elements of old and new existed side by side in China. The years after the Sino-Japanese war saw a reform movement that emphasized the need to use Western learning for practical developments while Chinese learning was to remain the essence. The Guanxu Emperor was eventually convinced to issue radical reforms - much to the dismay of arch conservatives. These conservatives, among whom the Empress Dowager Cixi, immediately started planning ways to obstruct the emperor… even ways to get rid of him.

Tongju 通剧 (local opera from Nantong, Jiangsu, China)
A performance of Tongju (通剧), a form of local opera (difang xiqu, 地方戏曲) from Nantong (南通市), Jiangsu province, east-central China. The play being performed here is part 3 of Wu Yingchun 《伍迎春》. The name of the troupe is, unfortunately, unknown.
Tongju, notably, has deep roots in local traditions of sorcery/witchcraft/shamanism dating back to the ancient kingdoms of Yue (越) and Chu (楚), practiced by folk sorcerers called tongzi (僮子) who conducted a ritual dance called Yi Wu Jiang Shen (以舞降神) in order to call spirits down from the heavens. It features a thoroughly distinctive singing style and is accompanied only by percussion. Almost incredibly, in comparison with other Chinese opera genres, Tongju's vocal and instrumental styles have remained virtually untouched by modernization and Westernization, and the genre retains a base of hundreds of thousands of avid listeners.
Probably filmed in Nantong (南通市), Jiangsu province, east-central China, unknown date.
Located on the northern bank of the Yangtze River, near the river's mouth, Nantong is a vital river port bordering Yancheng to the north, Taizhou to the west, Suzhou, Wuxi, and Shanghai to the south across the river, and the East China Sea to the east.

川黔铁路运转 Sichuan–Guizhou Railway Train Ride Experience
The Sichuan–Guizhou Railway or Chuanqian Railway (simplified Chinese: 川黔铁路; traditional Chinese: 川黔鐵路; pinyin: chuānqiǎn tiělù), is a single-track electrified railroad in southwest China between Chongqing Municipality and Guiyang, Guizhou Province. The shorthand name for the line, Chuanqian, is derived from the shorthand names of Sichuan Province (Chuan 川), to which Chongqing once belonged, and Guizhou (Qian 黔).
The Sichuan–Guizhou Railway originates in the north from the Chongqing Railway Station and shares tracks with the Chengdu–Chongqing Railway to Xiaonanhai. The line crosses the Yangtze River via the Baishatuo Railway Bridge and passes through Qijiang before entering northern Guizhou. The Liangfengya Tunnel 4,270 m (14,009 ft) on the Chuanqian Line in Tongzi was the longest railway tunnel in China when it was built.
First Sino-Japanese War (1894-1895) | History of China
Consider Supporting HoH:
Throughout most history Japan has been heavily influenced by China in terms of culture, philosophy, law, just to name a few. Well, this all changed after the Meiji restoration when Japan came to see China as… antiquated and weak against Western powers. Back in 1894, the small power of Japan faced the colossal Chinese empire in the Sino-Japanese war. Fought over the Korean peninsula, this war would be the ultimate test between the two powers and their respective modernisation projects. And trust me… it was an absolute steamroll campaign for one side of the conflict.

Dungan Revolt (1862–77)
The '''Dungan Revolt ( 1862–77 ) ''' or '''Tongzhi Hui Revolt''' (, Xiao'erjing: /, ) or '''Hui ( Muslim ) Minorities War''' was a mainly ethnic and religious war fought in 19th-century western China, mostly during the reign of the Tongzhi Emperor ( r. 1861–75 ) of the Qing dynasty. The term sometimes includes the Panthay Rebellion in Yunnan, which occurred during the same period. However, this article relates specifically to the uprising by members of the Muslim Hui and other Muslim ethnic groups in China's Shaanxi, Gansu and Ningxia provinces, as well as in Xinjiang, between 1862 and 1877. The revolt arose over a pricing dispute involving bamboo poles, when a Han merchant selling to a Hui did not receive the amount demanded for the goods. A recorded 20.77 million population reduction in Shaanxi and Gansu due to migration and war related death. 74.5% reduction in Gansu, and 44.7% in Shaanxi. In Shaanxi, 83.7% ( ~5.2 million ) of the total loss occurred in the period of war as a consequence of mass migration and war death. Many civilian deaths were also caused by famine due to war conditions. The uprising occurred on the western bank of the Yellow River in Shaanxi, Gansu and Ningxia, but excluded Xinjiang Province. A chaotic affair, it often involved diverse warring bands and military leaders with no common cause or a single specific goal. A common misconception is that the revolt was directed against the Qing dynasty, but no evidence shows that the rebels intended to attack the capital, Beijing, or to overthrow the entire Qing government. Most historians define it as a rebellion for secession. When the rebellion failed, mass emigration of the Dungan people from Ili to Imperial Russia ensued.

#Beijing-Shanghai HSR #Hexie Hao #CRH Train
This video was taken in March this year when the train was not yet extended to Chongqing;
Unlike other services which via Shanghai-Chengdu Corridor, this service takes a Northern Route by passing Yangtze and Huai and going along Yellow River, then goes back to the south by passing Qin Mountains. As the route is much faster, this train takes a shorter time at under 10hrs.
