Hells Gate Wilderness, Arizona Hike down Tonto Creek
This video is of a hike through the Arizona wilderness area called Hellsgate. Hells Gate is part of the Tonto National Forest located in Gila County, Arizona, at the base of the Mogollon Rim. Haigler creek and Tonto creek come together at the north end of the Hells Gate wilderness area. This is one of the most difficult hikes in Arizona. It is very unique because it requires that you swim through many parts of a very narrow canyon through which a creek flows and fills the canyon to form a number of small long skinny ponds and lakes. The terrain is very rugged and there is no trail to hike around most of the water features because of the steep sides of the canyon, hence the need to swim through them to progress down the canyon. A flash flood down this canyon could kill you if you are not prepared. Coordinates 34°11′29″N 111°07′43″W
This is a very difficult and awesome hike in Arizona. You must be in good physical condition. I recommend that you bring some Aleve pain pills to help with the sore muscles. It will take 2 to 5 days to make this hike depending upon how fast you hike. Enjoy the movie.
