Right next the 405 and US 1, Topanga State Park is one of the biggest state parks within city limits in the country. It has an array of landscapes varying from chaparral to broad leaf and grasslands. One of its most striking features is Eagle Rock, located on the northern side of the park, near Trippet Ranch. I highly recommend doing this hike in the spring when the wildflowers are out; they can illuminate your experience.

Parker Mesa Overlook Via East Topanga Fire Road - Topanga State Park/Pacific Palisades, CA
Hiking to Parker Mesa Overlook offers breathtaking views of Santa Monica Bay and the Pacific Ocean all along the way, and the coastal line from Parlos Verdes to Malibu. From the overlook, you can see gorgeous pano views as far as San Gabriel mountains, Santa Anna range and Catalina Island when the sky is clear!
There are a few different routes for this hike. I took Paseo Miramar trail and hiked from the top of the street of Paseo Miramar where East Topanga Fire Road meets.
The hike is 5.7 miles RT, and elevation gain is 900 ft. Beautiful hike and enjoy the views!

Los Liones Trail California Hiking in Topanga State Park | California Vlog | Episode 3 (2019)
Los Liones Trail California Hiking in Topanga State Park | California Vlog | Episode 3 (2019)
Looking for an easy hike with amazing views near Los Angeles, CA? The Los Liones trail in the Topanga State Park might be what you are looking for. It is also known as Los Leones. While this trail it a bit steep, it is well maintained and one can enjoy views of the Santa Monica Mountains and the Pacific Ocean all along the trail. We accessed the trail from the East Topanga Fire Road trail.
We had not researched the area before visiting and mainly wanted to do a short hike to check out the view. We were not prepared for what we found! Watch to find out why we had to eventually turn around.
Overall the Los Liones trail is a nice place to get out of the city and relax in nature. Visitors can stick to the main path, or explore off the beaten path areas.
More information about Topanga State Park is located on the state website.

Hiking to Eagle Rock in California's Topanga State Park
Videographer Richard Amaro hikes Topanga State Park's Eagle Rock Loop Trail.
Topanga Canyon Boulevard (CA-27) - Woodland Hills to Topanga Beach
Take a drive down Topanga Canyon Boulevard south over the Santa Monica Mountains, starting at Woodland Hills in the San Fernando Valley and ending at Topanga Beach, only seven miles away from Malibu.

Hiking up to Skull Rock and hanging out in the small cave that one must climb up to in order to get there rewarded me with beautiful views of the Los Angeles area coastline.
Hike to Eagle Rock - Topanga State Park, California
Topanga State Park is a beautiful park located within Los Angeles near Malibu. It's loaded with hiking trails and scenic vistas of the Santa Monica mountains, the L.A. area, and the Pacific. I had the opportunity to spend a few hours here while in the area and decided to do the hike up the Musch Trail to Eagle Rock.
This hike is one in a million, and I'd recommend it for anyone who's in the L.A. area. It's not terribly difficult, but not extremely short, either. You can make it a short hike or make an entire day out of it. I ended up hiking about 9 miles for the loop, but I also did a lot of exploring and a small bit of backtracking. The area has so many places to explore, I was like a kid in a candy shop.
The Musch Trail is an actual trail that is single track and steep in areas. Though it does feel remote in places, you're constantly reminded you're not far from civilization. Once up near the top of Eagle Junction, you see just how vast the area is. The view from the top of Eagle Rock is a 360-degree view of the surrounding mountains and is absolutely breathtaking.
Either direction you take on Eagle Spring fire road will give gorgeous views of the Pacific and the Palisades. If you take it up, you will see Eagle Rock on the approach. This is a fire road, so it's wide and relatively flat (does not feel as much like a trail), but it's most definitely worth it. If you take it back down like I did, you will still get great views of the ocean and your legs will get a break. There is almost no shade here, though, so in the heat of the day it can be rough.
Beware of rattlesnakes and mountain lions anytime of the year. And, regardless of the time of year you go remember that it is southern California and the sun is going to be hot. Don't forget a hat and some sunscreen and a lot of water--all things I forgot or had in short supply. I should have brought at least an extra liter of water.
If you are in the Los Angeles area and looking to do a hike, this is a must-do. It will give you a sense of the ruggedness and beauty of the Santa Monica Mountains and the true Southern California experience. There are miles and miles of trails and fire roads to hike, and whatever direction you decide to take will not be a disappointment. I would have loved to have had another few days to explore all the trails that wind through this amazing area.
This video was filmed with the iPhone 6 and GoPro Hero 3 camera.

Santa Ynez Falls - Topanga State Park, Santa Monica Mountains, CA
A 6.8 mile hike into Santa Ynez Canyon to see the waterfall at the end of the trail.
The hike starts high and you descend into the canyon and to the falls so going back to the trailhead requires you to ascend the mountain you came from.
Once down into the canyon, it's a beautiful hike with lots of trees and lush fauna along the creek. Very beautiful!
Eagle Rock - Topanga State Park, Santa Monica Mountains, CA
A solid 4.3 mile hike up to Eagle Rock made for some beautiful views of the surrounding Santa Monica Mountains and Pacific Ocean in the distance.
