At 3,000 vertical feet (880 m)
above the Colorado River,
the sheer drop from
Toroweap Overlook
offers a dramatic view.
The volcanic cinder cones
and lava flows in this ancestral
home of the Southern Paiute
people make this area unique.
A visit to Tuweep provides an
opportunity for an uncrowded,
rustic, and remote experience.
Access is challenging and
demands skill at
negotiating difficult roadways.
Summer brings monsoonal rain
and lightning. Winter includes
rain, snow, and freezing temperatures.
Be ready for quickly
changing conditions.
Need to Know
There is no water available.
Fires and charcoal grills prohibited.
No hunting or collecting.
No drones, wingsuits, or base jumping.
Preparedness and Directions
Flat tires are most frequent on smooth,
graded sections of roadway hiding
unseen fractured, sharp, limestone.
Travel slowly, 30 mph (50 kph) or less,
to avoid flat tires.
Carry extra water, food,
and warm clothing.
Due to rapidly changing conditions,
be equipped to spend the night.
During monsoon season, visit in
the morning before
the afternoon storms.
Flooding may occur when the
chance of precipitation is as low
as 10 percent. During muddy
winter conditions, travel when
routes are frozen and overnight
temperatures below 20°F (-7°C).
What to Experience
Watch Your Step! For your safety,
as well as the protection of a
delicate ecosystem, be careful where
you step and drive. A 3000-foot (915 m)
drop is one concern.
The less obvious micro-biotic crusts
are another; they hold soil and plant
nutrients in place and can
be easily damaged.
When exploring on foot, please stay
on trails, roads, washes, or rock
surfaces to protect the crusts and
avoid damaging native plants.
Toroweap Overlook: Dramatically
different than other Grand Canyon
viewpoints, Toroweap Overlook peers
out over an abrupt gorge set in a
broad corridor 3,000 feet (915 m)
below the rim.
Eight, million-year-old lava flows
and conical black cinder cones
stud the landscape.
Walk to the edge for a
breath-taking experience.
To the west, view the largest rapid
on nearly 300 miles (485 km)
of the park’s Colorado River.
Listen carefully for the roar of the
river or the faint sounds
from boaters below.
To the east, enjoy dramatic views.
Tuweep Hiking Trails: Two established
hiking trails can be accessed
from Tuweep. Their trailheads are
signed and cairns (piles of rock)
mark their path.
Plan ahead for your hike and
remember that shade is scarce
and water non-existent.
All trails are closed to
pets, bicycles, and vehicles.
Tuckup Trail: The Tuckup Trail
gives hikers a spectacular taste
of Esplanade slick-rock on a
former prospector’s path.
Follow the trail 3 miles (5 km) to
Cove Canyon and experience an
inner-canyon day hike rewarded
with endless views.
Access the Tuckup Trailhead north
of Tuweep Campground
or, if camping, from site 10.
Saddle Horse Loop Trail:
This 45-minute loop offers spectacular
views of the Colorado River,
as well as a colorful walk through
the native plant gardens protected
and nourished by beautiful displays
of micro-biotic crusted soils.
Every inch of crusted toppings signifies
10-years of growth and erosion.
Imagine what the landscape would
look like without these living organisms
doing their job. Access the trail along
the road between Toroweap Overlook
and Tuweep Campground or from
a trailhead near campsite 5.

The Beautifull Grand Canyon
Grand Canyon National Park is the United States' 15th oldest national park. Named a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1979, the park is located in northwestern Arizona. The park's central feature is the Grand Canyon, a gorge of the Colorado River, which is often considered one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World. The park covers 1,217,262 acres (1,901.972 sq mi; 492,608 ha; 4,926.08 km2) of unincorporated area in Coconino and Mohave counties. As of 2015, the park received more than five and a half million recreational visitors, which is the second highest count of all U.S. national parks after Great Smoky Mountains National Park.
Grand Canyon was officially designated a national park in 1919, though the landmark had been well known to Americans for over thirty years prior. In 1903, President Theodore Roosevelt visited the site and said: The Grand Canyon fills me with awe. It is beyond comparison—beyond description; absolutely unparalleled through-out the wide world... Let this great wonder of nature remain as it now is. Do nothing to mar its grandeur, sublimity and loveliness. You cannot improve on it. But what you can do is to keep it for your children, your children's children, and all who come after you, as the one great sight which every American should see.
Despite Roosevelt's enthusiasm and his strong interest in preserving land for public use, the Grand Canyon was not immediately designated as a national park. The first bill to establish Grand Canyon National Park was introduced in 1882 by then-Senator Benjamin Harrison, which would have established Grand Canyon as the second national park in the United States after Yellowstone. Harrison unsuccessfully reintroduced his bill in 1883 and 1886; after his election to the presidency, he established the Grand Canyon Forest Reserve in 1893. Theodore Roosevelt created the Grand Canyon Game Preserve by proclamation on 28 November 1906and Grand Canyon National Monument in 1908. Further Senate bills to establish the site as a national park were introduced and defeated in 1910 and 1911, before the Grand Canyon National Park Act was finally signed by President Woodrow Wilson in 1919. The National Park Service, established in 1916, assumed administration of the park.
The creation of the park was an early success of the conservation movement. Its national park status may have helped thwart proposals to dam the Colorado River within its boundaries. (Later, the Glen Canyon Dam would be built upriver.) In 1975, the former Marble Canyon National Monument, which followed the Colorado River northeast from the Grand Canyon to Lee's Ferry, was made part of Grand Canyon National Park. In 1979, UNESCO declared the park a World Heritage Site.
In 2010, Grand Canyon National Park was honored with its own coin under the America the Beautiful Quarters program
South Rim
A variety of activities at the South Rim cater to park visitors. The South Rim Drive (35 miles (56 km) is a driving tour split into two segments. The western drive to Hermit's Point is 8 miles (13 km) with several overlooks along the way, including Mohave Point, Hopi Point, and the Powell Memorial.[10] From March to December, access to Hermit's Rest is restricted to the free shuttle provided by the Park Service. The eastern portion to Desert View is 25 miles (40 km), and is open to private vehicles year round.
Walking tours include the Rim Trail, which runs west from the Pipe Creek viewpoint for about 8 miles (13 km) of paved road, followed by 7 miles (11 km) unpaved to Hermit's Rest. Hikes can begin
North Rim
On the North Rim there are few roads, however, there are some notable vehicle accessible lookout points including Point Imperial, Roosevelt Point, and Cape Royal. Mule rides are also available that go to a variety of places including several thousand feet down into the canyon.
Many visitors to the North Rim choose to make use of the variety of hiking trails including the Widforss Trail, Uncle Jim's Trail, the Transept Trail, and the North Kaibab Trail, the latter of which can be followed all the way down to the Colorado River, and to across to the South Kaibab Trail and the Bright Angel Trail, which continue up to the south rim of the Grand Canyon.
The Toroweap Overlook is located in the western part of the park on the North Rim. Access is via unpaved roads off Route 389 west of Fredonia, Arizona. The roads lead through Grand Canyon-Parashant National Monument and to the overlook.

Grand Canyon Toroweap Overlook
A video from our adventure trip into the middle of nowhere.... we drove 61 miles of dirtroad into the desert of Arizona without mobile reception, gas stations, civilization in order to see one of the most beautiful spots in the southwest: Toroweap!
Toroweap 2012: A visit to the Grand Canyon
We put 242 miles on dirt during our visit to Toroweap. This included a visit to Toroweap, Mt. Logan, Whitmore Overlook, Lava Falls and more. This was a spectacular trip and was very desolate. You couldn't ask for a better way to see the Grand Canyon than this. We traveled caravan style with a Nissan Titan and Xterra. Two small chihuahuas and a 3 year old boy completed this trip with us. Each of us completed the Rim to Bottom hike - if they can do it, anyone can.
***Always be extremely careful when entering the back country. Come prepared, often you are many hours or even days from a tow or from emergency care. Bring proper supplies, water, and most all experience. Remember if you are in doubt, do not go!

Drive to Toroweap Point, Grand Canyon, Arizona :: Trans-Americas Journey 10-29-08
As you can see in this video, the road to Toroweap Point is not exactly paved or even graded. The 60 or so miles took almost 3 hours and the last part, shown here was really slow going. Maybe that's why Toroweap rarely sees more than 12 visitors a day. In 2004 3,314,226 people visited the South Rim, 306,926 people visited the North Rim, and only 8,066 visited Toroweap! Grand Canyon-Parashant National Monument
After driving 60 miles south though the desert on rough roads we arrived at a remote section of the Grand Canyon and practically had the place all to ourselves. What an incredible experience!
