Ketchikan, AK. Totem Bight Park tour
The first people of Alaska have carved totem poles as part of their culture. The meanings and interpretation of the poles are included. The house shown is built the way Tlingit and Haida people have built it to house many families in one roof. The Totem Pole is the part of the house architecture. The Totem Bight park is full of wildlife and plants; berries: blueberries, huckleberries, salmon berries and large mossy trees. The body of water surrounding the park is clear and pristine. Bold Eagles are frequently seen in the park. There is coal in the crevices of the wooden ground at the beach of the park.
The cruise charges you more than $30 for this tour, plus the Creek street, but you can take the silver line bus to the park for $2 round-trip per person at this time and $1 for adults (50c) per ride. The silver line replaced the blue line. Just cross the street if you are traveling with a cruise line and you'll find the bus stop.
The ride takes about 20 minutes or less. The bus returns in an hour. Take an information booklet from the visitor center at the street before the park. The park does not have bathrooms in it, but the visitor information center has a bathroom near by. While there, also visit the park next to Totem Pole Bight Park. The Totem Heritage Center is a must, and so is a visit to at least one of the totem pole parks. But start at the museum so you’ll better understand what you’re seeing once you get to the parks. The exhibits here will give you a good grounding in the basics, like how to distinguish a Tlingit pole from a Haida totems the Tlingit stack one figure right on top of another, the Haida leave spaces), or how to tell an eagle figure from a bear figure from killer whale figure (you'll just have to see that one. Thirty-three poles carved in the 19th century are dramatically displayed inside the center, making it the largest collection of totem poles in the United States. Traditionally, an important part of a totem pole's lifecycles was rotting and returning to the earth. Prior to Western contact nobody would have thought about trying to preserve an old pole. But by the early 20th century, totem carving was a rapidly dying, and Tlingit elders agreed that it made sense to save these poles so future generations or carvers would have references. And that's how this museum came to be.

Cruising Alaska Ketchikan - Totem Bight Park
Hi Cruisers, in this short video (really just a few stills and clips) we take a look at Ketchikan and Totem Bight State Park.
If you’re cruising to Alaska, chances are, you’ll be stopping in Ketchikan. Situated at the southernmost entrance to Alaska’s inside passage, there’s so much to do and see here…from walking and shopping downtown to ziplining, checking out the salmon ladder, or catching a floatplane to Misty Fjords National Monument.
Our visit to Ketchikan took us to Totem Bight State Historical park, a gorgeous seaside 33 acre park showcasing 14 totem poles and a replica of a community house, or clanhouse.
We chose a ship tour, which started with a brief bus ride to the park. After a short nature walk, we heard stories about many of the poles- most of them quite tragic, and learned about the way the Klingit clans are divided into matrilineal groups.
A clanhouse of this size could have housed 30-50 people, with each family being allotted its own space around a central fireplace. Little ones will enjoy entering the house through the tiny entrance.
Speaking of kids, there are sticks to find and rocks to throw at the nearby scenic beach.
