Elaine Massacre: The bloodiest racial conflict in U.S. history | Dark History | New York Post
American streets ran with blood in 1919 during what would become known as Red Summer. In the small town of Elaine, Arkansas, racial tensions turned to riots after African-American sharecroppers tried to unionize. A staggering 237 people were estimated to be hunted down and killed in what is now known as the Elaine Massacre. The bloodbath made its way all the way up to the United States Supreme Court. This is “Dark History” by the New York Post.

It was called the Red Summer of 1919 named for the blood that ran through America’s cities during months of racial unrest.
African-American soldiers had returned home from “the great war,” World War I, to a country still teeming with discrimination and in their quest for civil rights, tensions between blacks and whites reached a tipping point.
Deadly race riots broke out in over two dozen cities but one rural town — Elaine, Arkansas — would become the epicenter of the bloodshed.
The violence there — lynch mobs, torture, indiscriminate murder — was so horrific, it would go down in history not as a race riot, but as the Elaine Massacre.

Abandoned, Vacant, and Re-purposed places in the Northeast
Here are the stories of these places:
Dunkirk Generating Station: Closed at the end of 2015
Lake Street Bridge: Closed in 2011 due to structural deficiencies, but is going to reopen in the future to pedestrians and cyclists once repairs occur.
St. Cabrini Novitiate: Directly behind the St. Cabrini nursing home, built in the early 1900's.
Steel Point: This vacant lot has plans to be redeveloped in the future.
Centralia: Near-ghost town in Columbia County, PA, due to an underground mine fire directly underneath the borough. The fire started in 1962, and after several failed attempts to extinguish it, most residents were moved out, and most buildings were razed in 1992.
Graffiti Highway: One road leading into Centralia was damaged by the mine fire, and the state eventually built another road around it, and stopped repairing it.
Flight 93 National Memorial: One of the four hijacked flights from September 11th, 2001 landed here. The visitor center opened in 2015.
Water Tower: This is the last remaining building/structure from the Anaconda Wire and Cable Company factory on the waterfront in Hastings-on-Hudson. There are plans to redevelop the area in the future, and possibly with keeping the water tower.
Wilmington Riverwalk: Old cranes were placed on the Riverwalk at Dravo Plaza.
Hermit Ruins: Irvington Hermit Johann Stolting built small buildings in the Irvington Woods in the 1880's. Many ruins, as well as his grave, are still there.
GM Plant: The land between Kingsland Point and downtown Sleepy Hollow was filled in for a General Motors plant, which closed in the 1990's. It is currently being redeveloped.
Old Croton Aqueduct: The first aqueduct carrying water from the Croton River to New York City was built in 1837 and operated until 1955, when a new aqueduct rendered it obsolete.
Asbury Park Casino: The building fell into ruins, and the carousel was moved out in the 1980's. It is still being fixed up.
Long Point: Former fishing town. All residents had moved out by the end of the 1950's, by sailing their houses across the harbor into downtown Provincetown. The lighthouse remains, but the area is only used as a beach.
Ellis Island: Major US immigration station from 1892 to 1964. Became a museum in 1990. A 1998 Supreme Court ruling determined that most of the island is officially in New Jersey.
Godfrey Windmill: Built in 1797, but was mostly shut down in the early 1900's. Repaired several times, and is now part of Chase Park in Chatham.
Knobley Tunnel: Former railway tunnel, reopened in 2011 to pedestrian and cyclist traffic.
SteelStacks: Former home of Bethlehem Steel, which closed in 2003. It has been transformed into a museum.

Despite being home to the largest winery in the world, the unemployment rate was nearly 13% in 2014. Modesto ranks number one in the country for car theft and out of 200,000 residents, up to 10,000 are reported to be gang members.
9. Oakland, California
The economy in Oakland is strong with a good median household income. ($51,683.) However, home to around 50 gangs and a high violent crime rate, Oakland also suffers from high traffic congestion and poor air quality. 190% worse than the national average.
8. New Orleans, Louisiana
The “murder capital of the country, also has one of the worst toxic-substance records. New Orleans has still not recovered from Hurricane Katrina, and was ranked number two in “America’s Dirtiest Cities.”
7. Birmingham, Alabama
27.3% of residents live below the poverty line. Out of every 100,000 residents, 1400 are victims of violent crimes due to the prominent drug trade and high poverty rate.
6. Stockton, California
In 2012, the city filed for bankruptcy. Forbes voted Stockton as one of the most dangerous cities in America due to its high crime rates with over 20,000 violent and property crimes committed last year.
5. Memphis, Tennessee
Memphis is the largest city on the Mississippi River with over 20% of its inhabitants living below the poverty line. In Memphis you stand a 1 in 12 chance of being a victim of crime.
4. New Haven, Connecticut
Home of Yale University, the surrounding areas of New Haven are impoverished and crime ridden. Nearly 68 crimes occur annually for every 1,000 residents.
3. Cleveland, Ohio
Aside from being one of the most corrupt cities in the country, Cleveland also has harsh weather conditions, with an average of 60 inches of snowfall each year.
2. Detroit, Michigan
The city is suffering from urban decay with over 32% of residents living below the national poverty line. According to FBI Reports, Detroit has the highest rate of violent crime of any city over 200,000.

Camden has been on Forbes’ list of “America’s Most Miserable Cities” for years. Riddled with urban decay and political corruption, over 42% of its residents live below the poverty line. It also has 560% more crime than the national average.

Santa’s Workshop In North Pole, NY
We are so in love with Santa's Workshop in the Lake Placid area of upstate New York! This was our first year visiting and we are sure to return as a yearly tradition. Opened in July 1, 1949, Santa's Workshop is the oldest theme park in the United States. From what I have read, it hasn't changed much since opening and it retains a charm that appeals to all ages. The kiddo was truly enchanted! There are buildings to explore and various characters to meet, including the big man himself! The rides appeal to the under 4 ft crowd. In the snow the place is really magical and a fun day out. And only a couple hours from Montreal. Highly recommend visiting in the Christmas season!

Lake Placid NY is a village near the lake of the same name, in New York State’s Adirondack Mountains. It's known as a Winter Olympics venue and a hub for snow sports and other outdoor pursuits. In the center of town, Mirror Lake has a trail around the shoreline. The Lake Placid Olympic Museum exhibits artifacts including team uniforms and medals. The Historical Society Depot Museum is in the old train station.
Wilmington, North Carolina
Wilmington is a port city in- and is the county seat of- New Hanover County in coastal southeastern North Carolina, United States. The population is 106,476; according to the 2010 Census it is the eighth most populous city in the state. Wilmington is the principal city of the Wilmington Metropolitan Statistical Area, a metropolitan area that includes New Hanover and Pender counties in southeastern North Carolina, which has a population of 263,429 as of the 2012 Census Estimate.
Wilmington was settled by European Americans along the Cape Fear River. Its historic downtown has a one-mile-long Riverwalk, developed as a tourist attraction. It is minutes away from nearby beaches. The National Trust for Historic Preservation named Wilmington, North Carolina, as one of its 2008 Dozen Distinctive Destinations. City residents live between the river and the ocean, with four nearby beach communities: Fort Fisher, Wrightsville Beach, Carolina Beach, and Kure Beach, all within half-hour drives from downtown Wilmington.
