Slovenia - Skofja Loka and Kranj
Half a day stop in two Slovenian towns on the way to the airport. Well worth the visit.
You can catch a bus to Škofja Loka from Ljubljana. The oldest medieval town in Slovenia. From the bus stop take a walk over the 14th century Capuchin Bridge to the centre. Let yourself guided by the narrow streets. The 13th century Parish Church of St James is not to be missed as well.
From the same drop off point, there is another bus that goes to Kranj, the 4th biggest city of the country. Time only allowed me to go in the old town, but one can easily spend a full day here. Plenty of parks to explore, rich architecture and many restaurants to get a taste of Slovenian cuisine.
There is public transport connecting all these town, but even in summer they're quite rare so make sure to check the time table in advance. If you are in a rush a taxi might be a better option as the airport is quite close.
I hope this short video gave you a taste of Slovenia. Thanks for watching.

ARGGGGG This is in Slovenia, not Slovakia. When you travel so much and hit many cities its hard sometimes not to get confused. But there are no excuses. I am sorry. Slovenia is GREAT!
From Wikipedia
Kranj (pronounced [ˈkɾàːn] (listen), German: Krainburg[3]) is the fourth-largest city in Slovenia, with a population of 37,373 (2015). It is located approximately 20 kilometres (12 miles) northwest of Ljubljana. The centre of the City Municipality of Kranj and of the traditional region of Upper Carniola (northwestern Slovenia) is a mainly industrial city with significant electronics and rubber industries.
The nucleus of the city is a well-preserved medieval old town, built at the confluence of the Kokra and Sava rivers. The city is served by the Kranj railway station on the route from Ljubljana to Munich, Germany (via Jesenice and Villach, Austria) and a highway. Slovenia's national airport, Ljubljana Jože Pučnik Airport (in Brnik) is also very close to Kranj, considerably more so than its nominal client, Ljubljana.
Kranj was attested in written sources in the 5th century and c. 670 as Carnium (and as via Chreinariorum in 973, actum Kreine in 1050–65, in loco Chreina in 1065–77, and Chrainburch in 1291). The Slovene name is derived from Slavic *Korn’ь, borrowed from Romance Carnium in late antiquity. Like the Latin regional name Carnia, it is derived from the northern Italic (Celtic) tribe known as the Carnī (Greek: Κάρνοι). The name of the tribe is probably derived from the Celtic root *karno- 'peak, hill, pile of stones'.[4] The German name of the town was Krainburg.[5] The name of the historical region of Carniola is a Latin diminutive form of Carnia.[4]
Archaeological finds show that Kranj was settled in prehistoric times. Discoveries include a bronze ax found in Drulovka, Hallstatt-era graves in the northern part of the town above the bank of the Kokra River, testifying to Illyrian settlement, and a burial site in the southern part of the town above the left bank of the Sava River, indicating a Celtic settlement. The Romans founded the settlement of Carnium at the confluence of the Sava and Kokra. In the 6th century, a major Germanic settlement stood at the same site, and an Ostrogothic cemetery was discovered nearby. The Gothic settlement was continued by the Lombards and existed until c. AD 580, when it was destroyed by invading Slavs.[6]
Traces of the old Slavic settlement (a Slavic burial site) date from the 9th and 10th centuries. As the seat of the margraves of Carniola in the 11th century, it was the most important settlement in the territory. The town itself is believed to have developed in the early 13th century; citizens of the town of Kranj appear in a document from 1221, and Kranj was officially referred to as a town in 1256. It was the seat of a court whose jurisdiction extended between that of Radovljica and Kamnik. In 1414 a decision was issued relieving the citizens of the town from paying tolls. In 1422 an ordinance required houses to be built of stone to prevent fires. A parish school was established in Kranj in 1423, and the same year the right was granted to Kranj to elect its own judge. Kranj was laid waste in 1471 in an Ottoman attack. Emperor Frederick III granted Kranj the right to collect tolls in documents from 1488 and 1493, and a 1493 document also granted the town the right to hold fairs twice a year. The town hospice records date back to the 15th century.[6]
Crafts developed in Kranj during the Middle Ages. Mills first developed along the Sava and Kokra rivers, and this was followed by butchers, fur merchants, hide and wood processors, and then weavers of canvas and woolen cloth. Habsburg efforts to maintain Vienna's monopoly on trade with Italy resulted in trade routes bypassing Kranj.[6]
Kranj was affected by peasant revolts in the 16th century; the leaders of the 1515 peasant revolt were beheaded in Kranj, and in 1525, when a new revolt threatened Carniola, hussars commanded by Johann Katzianer occupied the town and caused more damage than the Ottomans had inflicted half a century earlier. In 1668 half of the houses in Kranj were destroyed by a fire, and the entire town burned in 1749. Kranj was affected by plague outbreaks in 1552, 1557, 1625, 1627, and 1657. In the mid-16th century, most of the townspeople converted to Protestantism; the merchants of Kranj opened a Protestant school and Slovenian books by Protestant authors were imported from Germany. The Protestant Reformation in Kranj was led by Gašpar Rokavec, who was succeeded by Jernej Knafel after his death. Knafel was forced to withdraw from Kranj to Brdo Castle during the Counter-Reformation.[6]
Economically, teamster services developed in Kranj in the 16th century, with connections to the rest of Upper Carniola and Carinthia. There were also several blacksmith workshops and two foundries along the Sava River.

Vishwaguru Paramhans Swami Maheshwarananda visit to Slovenia
On a cool November weekend, His Holiness Vishwaguru Maheshwaranandaji visited Slovenia and warmed the hearts of many Slovenians and other seminar participants from all around the world.
On the first day of his visit, Vishwaguruji opened two new Yoga in Daily Life centers in Murska Sobota and Ptuj, in the presence of the Indian Ambassador to Slovenia, H.E. Paramjit Mann. Deputy Mayor of the area, Mr Boštjan Berlak also joined the opening ceremony in Murska Sobota; and local Mayor Mr Miran Senčar in Ptuj.
In the evening of that great day, the Weekend Seminar began in Kranj. This small city, near Ljubljana, the capital of Slovenia, has a long and noteworthy history and is located in a beautiful environment, which includes the river Sava and the already snowy peaks of the Alps. Kranj also houses a beautiful center of Yoga in Daily Life.
H.H. Vishwaguruji emphasized that the methods of Yoga and Ayurveda are the best ways to prolong one's life and improve health. The human body and mind are contaminated with what are called vikaras - impurities, including negative thoughts and the lack of proper nourishment. Yoga and Ayurveda provide the tools for cleansing these impurities.
Part of the program was dedicated to the practice of Meditation using the resonance of the mantra AUM, for purification and healing; and in the Saturday evening satsang, Vishwaguruji emphasized the importance of mantras for daily use.
The warmth of this special event over a few days will surely remain for a long time in the hearts of all present, teachers and studnts alike.

After crossing the bridge towards St. Francesco's Cathedral, I found the plaza of Pre-Sheren. It is noticeable that group tourists gather to listen to the guide's explanation. It is a statue of Francesche Preherren, a 19th century poet who represents the city of romance and love. Julia liked poetry. So Preceren has built many poems for Julia. The statue of Preceren is here, and Julia's house was right there. Preceren is still looking at Julia. It's a beautiful love story. Following Franço's gaze, he and his wife, Julia Primitz's house and bronze statue appear. Julia, the daughter of the nobleman, finally did not accept his courtship. Slovenia's most beloved writer, Franche Preceren, spent his entire life in Kran, 30 minutes away by car from Ljubljana. There is still his birthplace here. This is Pre-Sheren's house. It is now used as a museum. Shiro is a romantic poet who established new norms in Slovenian literature and inspired ethnic sentiments. Francesche Preheren put on a beautiful poem with her first love Julia in her heart. This leaves their love forever.

Škofja Loka
Slovenia
Škofja Loka (pronounced [ˈʃkoːfja ˈloːka] (listen); German: Bischoflack) is a town in Slovenia.[2] It is the economic, cultural, educational, and administrative centre of the Municipality of Škofja Loka in Upper Carniola.[3] It has about 12,000 inhabitants.
Škofja Loka lies at an elevation of 354 metres (1,161 ft)[4] at the confluence of the Poljane Sora and the Selca Sora rivers, at the transition of the Sora Plain into the Škofja Loka Hills and the Polhov Gradec Hills. Its old centre stands on river terraces, and comprises Town Square (Plac) and Lower Square (Lontrg). On a plateau above the town stands Loka Castle, which houses the Loka Museum.[5] Above the castle rises Krancelj Hill (475 metres or 1,558 feet). North of the town centre is Kamnitnik Hill (414 metres or 1,358 feet high), known for its conglomerate rock.[6] Immediately south of the town is a plain known as Viršk or Viršk Plain (Slovene: Virško polje), which the Poljane Sora flows through before joining the Selca Sora. The name Viršk is a corruption of German Hirsacker 'millet field', named for the millet that was grown there in the past.[7]
Škofja Loka was mentioned in 973 as Lonca (referring to Stara Loka) (and as Lonka in 1160, Lok in 1192–97, Scofolotti in 1293, and Scofioloco in 1295, among other names). The name literally means 'bishop's (wet) meadow', referring to its ownership by the Bishops of Freising.[8]
In 973, the lordship of Škofja Loka was granted by Emperor Otto II to the Bishops of Freising, and for the next one thousand years the history of the town was tied to that of the distant ecclesiastical principality.[8][9] A castle and tower were built above the town for defense purposes and later became the residence of the bishop's governor. In the 11th or 12th century. Emperor Otto III granted the bishops the right to mint coinage and collect tolls. Škofja Loka was first mentioned as having market rights in 1248, and having town rights in 1274.
Škofja Loka castle
Škofja Loka was walled in the 14th century. In 1457, Duke Jan Vitovec entered and burned the town. The town was attacked by the Ottomans in 1476. The town also suffered from plague and fires during this time. Peasant revolts occurred in Škofja Loka in 1488, 1492, and 1515. Škofja Loka was destroyed by the 1511 Idrija earthquake but soon rebuilt through the efforts of Bishop Phillip. Lutheranism was established in Škofja Loka in 1526. Laws were passed against the new religion, and a Counter-Reformation committee was convened at the castle in 1601, resulting in the burning of Protestant books.[9]
Much of the town was damaged by fires in 1660 and 1698. The defensive walls gradually became obsolete and were mostly removed together with the town gates in 1789.[9]
Škofja Loka is the site of seven known mass graves from the period immediately after the Second World War. Two additional mass graves connected with these are located in neighboring Vincarje. Additional prisoners of war were disposed of at Gabrovo, Bodovlje, Trnje, Pevno, and other sites. An unknown number of Home Guard prisoners of war and Slovene civilians, and possibly victims of other nationalities, were murdered and buried at several sites in and around Loka Castle.
The Best Waterfall in Slovenia: Perichnik
Mojstrana is an alpine village situated at an elevation of 661m. The two rivers Triglavska Bistrica and Sava Dolinka meet here forming the River Sava, the longest river in Slovenia. Mojstrana is one of the entrances to the Triglav national park from the north and has been known for its healthy climate for many years.
The first written records of Mojstrana go back to the year 1590. The name of the village supposedly indicated a large number of tradesmen (mojster = a tradesman) which is still reflected in the house names today. The history of Mojstrana is closely connected to iron and cement. Before WWI, deposits of iron ore and a big cement factory offered work to the locals. During both Wars tourism became very popular and tourists, mountaineers and hunters liked to visit the place. Today the village has about 1200 inhabitants.
You can visit St Clemens's chuch, the Slovenian alpine museum, and see very old authentic houses. Some important Slovenian sportsmen came from Mojstrana: the ski jumpers Janez Polda and Marjan Pečar, the alpine skiers Alenka Dovžan and Jure Košir, and the sport climber Martina Čufar. 18 sportsmen who were born in Mojstrana represented our country in the Olympic Games.
Mojstrana is the gateway to three magnificent valleys at the heart of the Triglav National Park, Vrata, Krmo and Kot. We invite you to enjoy the many outdoor activities or simply relax in the quiet, natural setting.
The tourist information office is in the centre of Mojstrana. In the summer season it is open every day and in the winter season at weekends.
Peričnik Falls is one of the best-known waterfalls in Slovenia. It flows from a hanging valley in Triglav National Park into the glacial Vrata Valley, where the water of Peričnik Creek then flows into Bistrica Creek. There are actually two waterfalls: Upper Peričnik Falls (Slovene: Zgornji Peričnik, 16 meters or 52 feet high) and Lower Peričnik Falls (Slovene: Spodnji Peričnik, 52 meters or 171 feet high). The larger, lower waterfall is usually simply known as Peričnik Falls. A view of both falls is possible by crossing Bistrica Creek and ascending the scree slope a few dozen meters.

Land of Triglav the most interesting part of Slovenia taken from air!
Video of Gorenjska region Slovenia made from air .If by some misfortune you were only allowed to visit one region of Slovenia, there is no doubt that Gorenjska would be a good choice. There, for example, you can enjoy views of wonderful Lake Bled and Lake Bohinj and the peaks of the Julian Alps and the Kamnik-Savinja Alps, a wide range of outdoor activities in the resort town of Kranjska Gora, and strolls through the beautifully preserved centres of old towns such as Kranj and Škofja Loka. But of course Gorenjska also offers many other pleasures.
Triglav, Slovenia's highest mountain, lies at the heart of the Triglav National Park, an area of high, rocky mountains and deep river gorges, karst chasms and sunny Alpine pastures which offers protection to many endemic animal and plant species and the traditions of the former way of life of rugged mountain-dwellers and Alpine dairy farmers.
On the northern side of the kingdom of Triglav is the Upper Sava Valley. In summer, the popular tourist resort of Kranjska Gora offers a wealth of outdoor recreational activities and sports (hiking, climbing, cycling, horse riding, skydiving, fishing), while in winter it has excellent facilities for various forms of skiing and other winter pleasures (dog sledding, night tobogganing, snowmobile rides). Visitors to Kranjska Gora can also enjoy a casino and a range of wellness programmes, while children will have fun in the land of the fictional hero Kekec. In nearby Planica, in the shelter of two-thousand-metre peaks, the world's best ski jumpers come to compete every year.
The area of the Julian Alps is enclosed by two beautiful lakes. The resort town of Bled, with its legendary island in the middle of the lake and its clifftop castle, its hot springs and its pleasant climate, has been attracting cosmopolitan visitors for centuries. Bathing establishments, hotels with swimming pools, footpaths, tennis courts, golf courses, a casino, the sports airfield in Lesce and nearby sights of natural and cultural interest provide plenty more reasons for a visit. Not far from the lake is Blejski Vintgar, the remarkable natural gorge of the river Radovna. Bohinj, with its unspoilt Alpine lake, is popular with visitors not only for its beautiful natural setting and the ski centres of Vogel, Kobla and Soriška Planina, but also for its rich local cultural traditions and numerous cultural and religious monuments. Nearby Pokljuka is a paradise for hikers and mushroom pickers and a venue for important international biathlon competitions.
The most important river in this area is the Sava. At the point where the river begins to be invigorated by tributaries from left and right, the valley gradually widens. Cities and towns with venerable traditions, together with the villages scattered across the high Alps and softly rounded hills, create a land of new experiences not far from the national capital.
The centre of Gorenjska is Kranj, with its surprising industrial, commercial and cultural traditions. The architect Jože Plečnik had a profound impact on the appearance of Kranj's old town centre. Two of the most important cultural venues in the town are the Prešeren Theatre and Khislstein Castle, the latter of which is home to Gorenjska Museum.
Škofja Loka has the most beautifully preserved medieval town centre in Slovenia. The rooms of Loka Castle contain various museum collections, while the former castle garden has become an open-air museum.
Below Blegoš, the highest peak of the Škofja Loka Hills, the countless beauties of Škofja Loka combine with the many local cultural and craft traditions of the Poljanska Dolina and Selška Dolina valleys. Železniki, a former ironworking centre, conserves the lacemaking tradition, while Dražgoše is famed for its gingerbread. The Škofja Loka Hills are full of pleasant paths and trails for hikers and cyclists. Škofja Loka and the surrounding area also offer a number of themed routes and restaurants offering traditional cuisine.
To the north, near the border with Austria, is Jezersko, an attractive area with its own autochthonous breed of sheep, Planšarsko Jezero (a man-made lake), Čedca Waterfall (the highest in Slovenia), ancient farmhouses and granaries, and unspoilt mountain scenery. Not far from Tržič, a town with a long shoemaking tradition, is the world-famous Dovžan Gorge, where several interesting geological phenomena may be observed. The Kamnik-Savinja Alps also contain one of the most popular ski resorts in Slovenia: Krvavec.
