A Guided Tour of Must See Sarajevo, Bosnia
One day is Sarajevo is not enough! All those scheduling and rescheduling of different tours during this Balkan trip led to a shortened stay in Sarajevo. Hissy fits didn't help with this fait accompli.
A wonderful guide, Anja, began the walking tour from Hotel Hayat, down along the Miljacka River to the Mayor's Bridge. She started with some Austro-Hungarian history before walking us back towards Pigeon Square.
Watch for more videos divided into the Ottoman Section, followed by the Austro-Hungarian. I loved Sarajevo and was so disappointed by the minimal time here.

A Guided Tour of The Ottoman Area of Sarajevo, Bosnia
Pigeon Square holds the lovely old Sebilj water fountain from 1891, the only one remaining in Sarajevo. It resembles a gazebo rather than a water fountain and the Pigeon name is self-explanatory.
Down all the little side streets radiating off from this square. The former Leather Street. Still working Copper Street with copper bracelets, coffee pots, ewers. A street filled with Sarajevo's version of fast food, lines of restaurants. A person could spend months eating without touching all the restaurant choices.
Though the 1551 stone Bursa Bedistan that was once a silk trading bazaar filled with small knock-off shops. Into the courtyard of the Gazi-Husrevbey Vakuf Mosque, one of the finest examples of Ottoman architecture in the world, built by court architect Sinan. A lot to see...

Coffee, the Foundation of Bosnian Social Life
Coffee is the world’s favorite beverage and it is consumed across the planet. The coffee plant went a long way from east Africa where it originates to the middle east from which it spread throughout the Muslim world. It is thanks to trade routes and merchants that coffee reached Europe as well as the New World. In the 16th century coffee started to be consumed in Europe for the first time and it was in the south-eastern parts of the continent which was at the time controlled by the Ottoman empire that the first European coffee-shops were making Bosnia and particularly the city of Sarajevo one of the first European cities to have such a place.
People were consuming this hot beverage in Hans of Sarajevo already in the 16th century. By the time it reached mahalas and private houses it was already the foundation of social life of the city. In the same century there was already a separate tahmiscija guild dedicated to roasting and pounding coffee. This is at least a century before Vienna, Paris and other European capitals started enjoying this drink.
The preparation of coffee
Many steps are necessary before coffee can be consumed. Primarily, one should roast the coffee beans. The traditional way would be roasting it in a metal cylindrical vessel known as Shish which is rolled over fire. Then the roasted beans are either ground in a coffee grinder or pounded in Dibek which makes the coffee particularly flavorful. The next step is the preparation which varies greatly depending on the location and customs, but it usually involves open flame and forming the top layer of foam. In general, one should serve Bosnian coffee on a tray called tabla and it should be drank from fildzan, a porcelain cup used specifically for this purpose. Another local custom is to consume sweets with coffee such as lokum or baklava and to drink coffee without added sugar.
Differences in Coffee consumption
In the modern world of today people consume coffee to stay alert during busy days. Students are known to drink lots of it while preparing exams in order to stay awake during long study sessions. In Bosnia, coffee is consumed for a different purpose as it is usually a break from whatever you are doing, and it is something you would rarely do by yourself. Traditional coffee is called Bosnian coffee but in some parts of the region you can also hear people calling it Turkish coffee even though there are clear differences between the two. To make Turkish coffee you would add sugar during the cooking process and you would add cold water and let it cook slowly. Bosnian coffee is prepared by adding boiling water to ground coffee and it is always served bitter. It is up to a persons’s preference how much sugar should be added. The most important part of making Bosnian coffee is the foam which is distributed evenly to everyone around the table.
As coffee holds a vital place in Bosnian society many distinct coffee-related words have developed over time. The most common word for coffee drinking is “kahvenisanje”. It constitutes more than the mere act of drinking and it actually means socializing over coffee. Another important term is “ćejf” (cheyf) which can be translated as pleasure or the act of enjoying something. Even though this word is not solely related to coffee, the act of coffee drinking could be described as “ćejf”.

SARAJEVO 'Where East Meets West' ► Bosnia Travel Vlog
Join me, Vivi, in my trip around the world! This 'episode' I explore the city of Sarajevo in Bosnia & Herzegovina
Museums I recommend-
Gallery 11/07/95
This museum hosts a collection of art, photographs, documentaries and videos about the war and genocides in Bosnia & Herzegovina , particularly focusing on the Srebrenica massacre.I found it to be moving and emotional, and would highly recommend, especially for anyone interested in art and photography.
Museum of Crimes Against Humanity and Genocide
This museum documents the war in Bosnia & Herzegovina through personal items with written statements alongside them, documentaries & interviews, diagrams, dioramas and weapons used in the war. If you only have time to visit one museum, I recommend to visit this one as it has such a vast collection and gets into great detail about the war, however I would dedicate between 2-4 hours there as there is a lot to read and watch. It is also incredibly emotional to visit but your ticket gives you entry for the day, so if you get overwhelmed you can go for a walk and come back later in that day.
War Childhood Museum
The museum presents the experiences of children who lived through the war in Bosnia, told through objects, video testimonies, and excerpts from oral histories. It's hard to imagine how a siege and war affects a child but this museum does an amazing job at describing how it impacted so many children, as shown through their personal letters and objects. Particularly interesting was a collection of the humanitarian aid food tins/packages one child collected during the war.
Also shown;
The Sarajevo Roses
A number of craters left by fatal mortar strikes have been filled with red resin to remember those lost during the Siege of Sarajevo.
The Eternal Flame
The Eternal flame is a memorial to the military and civilian victims of the Second World War in Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina. The flames never stop burning which makes this monument a unique piece of art, idea and dedication.
I stayed at Hostel Franz Ferdinand, and would highly reccomend, it was clean, comfortable and had awesome staff working there! :)

A Guided Tour of The Austro-Hungarian Section of Sarajevo, Bosnia
From the Bascarsija section (now you know why it is referred to as Pigeon Square) into the Austro-Hungarian area of Sarajevo. Only a few of the ornate decorations remain on buildings from this era. Tito, in all his wisdom (sarcasm), had them removed.
Sarajevo was annexed by the Habsburgs to become part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire in 1908.
This is where Archduke Ferdinand was assassinated in 1914, an even that sparked World War I. Ferhadija Street is filled with upscale shops, sidewalks cafes and is Sarajevo's favorite passeggiata spot in the evening. The rest? In the video...
