Travel Guide for the Car Guy: Toyota USA Museum in Torrance
Hey guys this is the second video in my series, Tour Guide for the Car Guy. In this series I will feature things like car meets, amazing driving roads, museums and plenty more that are accessible at any given time of the year. Im avoiding featuring events that are date specific only because not everyone will be able to get a chance to attend those events when they're in that city. I'm trying to keep it broad enough that when you're visiting a place like Tokyo or Los Angeles, you'd have no problem going to these locations. Does that make sense? lol
This time we visit the Toyota Museum in Los Angeles, California. Or Torrance, whichever helps you sleep at night.
I'm no filmmaker or videographer so please bare with me. Any suggestions on improving video entertain please leave in the comments and I will do my best to implicate them into the next video.
Any other locations and suggestion please feel free to contact me as I'd love to feature it in my up coming projects.

Toyota Celebrates 60 Years in the U.S.
When Toyota launched its North American headquarters in a Hollywood, Calif., dealership on October 31, 1957, it was, no doubt, a frightening affair.
Halloween notwithstanding, a Japanese car company making a foray into the U.S. market was a bold move 60 years ago. And its first vehicle, the Toyopet Crown, didn’t turn out to be a screaming success either.
But since those humble beginnings in a 3,000-square-foot, one-time Rambler dealership, Toyota has woven itself into the cultural fabric of America. Sixty years in, it encompasses a presence in every state, including 10 manufacturing facilities (14 in North America), nearly 1,500 Toyota and Lexus dealerships and 136,000 direct, dealer and supplier U.S. employees. And, the company recently unified operations by bringing together its quality engineering, sales, marketing, financial services and corporate functions in one location at a new North America headquarters campus in Plano, Texas.
“Celebrating our anniversary isn’t just about the products we’ve sold the past 60 years,” said Toyota Motor North America CEO Jim Lentz. “It’s also about celebrating Toyota’s thousands of employees who will help the company embark on the next leg of its American journey and continuing to improve our products and services for our customers.”
To commemorate its 60th anniversary, Toyota rededicated a 50th anniversary time capsule originally dedicated at its former Torrance, Calif., headquarters in 2007. The capsule—which includes items like a 2000GT die cast matchbox edition model car, an original key for a 1977 Toyota Hilux truck and a Toyota Formula One racer scale model—will be re-opened on the 100th anniversary in 2057. Plano Mayor Harry LaRosiliere, who attended the ceremony, said the capsule marks a new chapter for Toyota.
“As Toyota moved their North American corporate offices to Plano over the last three years, the entire region has experienced the positive impact of their team members unique character and culture. The entire organization exhibits a sense of purpose, innovation, and family. We are proud they call Plano home, and we are honored to be part of today’s anniversary celebration,” LaRosiliere said. “We look forward to the next 60 years with Toyota in the City of Plano.”
The Metal
Toyota’s American journey has been fueled by the cars it makes. In the 1950s that meant the Toyopet Crown and the now-legendary Land Cruiser. Introduced in the ‘60s, the Corolla would go on to become the bestselling nameplate in the world.
The ’70s got sporty with the Celica and the beloved Supra, while the ’80s introduced the American public to Camry and 4Runner, among others.
In 1989, Toyota launched its luxury vehicle division, Lexus, in the U.S. with two models, the LS 400 and ES 250.
In the ‘90s, Toyota filled out its lineup with models like the Tacoma, RAV4, Avalon and Sienna, and from Lexus, the GS, LX and RX.
In 2003, Toyota launched Scion to bring in younger customers and to test out revolutionary processes and products. As a result, the xB became an icon for a new millennium.
And, Toyota changed the world by pushing hybrid technology into the American mainstream with the Prius, which surfaced in 1997 and launched in the U.S. in 2000. More than a decade later, the iconic Prius was followed by another alternative fuel vehicle, the hydrogen fuel cell powered Mirai.
Manufacturing, Engineering and Captive Finance
The ‘70s were critical to operations. Toyota marked its first U.S. production, signing Atlas Fabricators of Long Beach (later changed to TABC) to make truck beds. Toyota Technical Center, which just celebrated its 40th anniversary in May, opened its first U.S. R&D facility and Calty Design Research opened its doors in Southern California.
Growth continued into the ‘80s with the launch of manufacturing facilities in California and Kentucky. In addition, Toyota Motor Credit Corporation (now known as Toyota Financial Services), began operations in the U.S. in October 1982.
In the ‘90s and ‘00s, Toyota added vehicle and parts plants in Indiana, West Virginia, Alabama, Tennessee, Texas, Missouri and Mississippi. To support the rapid growth, Toyota consolidated its R&D and manufacturing operations under a single company in 2006.
The Future
Over the years, Toyota Motor North America has transformed from just a sales company into a mobility company.
In 2016, the Toyota Research Institute launched, leading the way to autonomous vehicles, robotics, vehicle safety and materials science. In the same year, Toyota Connected was created to use data to personalize the customer driving experience.
What started as a single store in Southern California has evolved into an American institution that continues to bring jobs, mobility and technology to its communities.

Hundreds of Janitors Protest in Front of North Hollywood Toyota Dealership, Asking Whether
Toyota Cares About California
Janitors who lost their jobs cleaning Toyotas national headquarters have been unemployed for over three months. Protestors call on Toyota to help them get their jobs back.
I have been out of work for three months now, and all I want is my job back. I want to support myself and my grandchildren who rely on me, said Teresa Olivera.
Olivera is one of 30 janitors who lost their jobs in a massive layoff of 40% of the staff who cleaned the Toyota national headquarters in Torrance, California. The janitors were employed by GCA Services, who is contracted by Toyota to clean their Torrance campus. The layoffs have left the janitors and their families with no way to pay rent or put food on the table.
To provide some support to the workers, over 250 of their fellow janitors—together with community supporters from across Los Angeles—marched and rallied to call on Toyota to tell their contractor to bring the janitors back on the job.
Protestors asked if Toyota cared about anything except how many cars they could sell in California. Toyota is leaving California workers behind, said Mike Garcia, president of the janitors union. They stood silently by as their contractor, GCA Services, put 30 hardworking janitors out of a job. Now they are closing their only car manufacturing plant in California, which will cost 35,000 California workers their jobs.

Police shoot dozens of rounds at innocent women driving vehicle similar to manhunt suspect
TORRANCE, CA -- Two women were hospitalized after being attacked by police for driving a blue Toyota Tacoma. Police were looking for a pickup truck of a different color, make, and model with connection to the ex-LAPD officer (Christopher Dorner) suspected of murder.
Upon seeing this truck drive down a street receiving special police protection, they began unloading their weapons on sight. Reportedly the truck had its lights off while delivering papers.
There are almost 40 bullet holes visible in this picture. It is obviously in a residential neighborhood.

1997 Acura SLX Reborn with Super Handling All-Wheel Drive
Acura will throw it back to the '90s this weekend with the debut of a restored and reimagined 1997 Acura SLX – the brand’s first SUV and first AWD vehicle – at the RADwood Car Show in Orange County on Saturday, Dec. 7. Built specifically for RADwood, the SLX’s original 3.2L V6, 4-speed automatic and conventional 4x4 drivetrain were swapped out for Acura’s latest and greatest performance technology – a 350-horsepower, race-tuned 2.0-liter VTEC Turbo, 10-speed automatic transmission and the 4th generation of Acura’s torque-vectoring Super-Handling All-Wheel Drive (SH-AWD) system, all sourced from a third-generation Acura RDX. Acura heads to RADwood as the brand celebrates crossing 1-million SH-AWD-equipped vehicles, and over 1.6 million SUVs sold in North America.
The Acura SLX, developed in partnership with Isuzu (based on the Isuzu Trooper), was sold in limited numbers between the 1996 and 1999 model years. It was succeeded by the fully Acura-engineered MDX, and later the RDX, models that have gone on to see tremendous market success, leading their respective segments in sales.
“Acura is an ‘80s kid, so RADwood is a perfect event for us to display our heritage,” said Jon Ikeda, vice president and Acura brand officer. “Nostalgia for ‘80s and ‘90s vehicles has grown tremendously, and we’re seeing them start to become really collectable. RADwood is always packed with a lot of fun and interesting stuff, so we knew we would have to bring something a little crazy to the table.”
To maintain the ‘90s charm of the Acura SLX, minimal changes were made to the exterior and interior. The original two-tone paint scheme was updated using Performance Red Pearl and Champagne-Silver, while the original wheels and tires have been swapped out for 17-inch Fifteen52 Tarmac wheels wrapped in Yokohama Geolander A/T tires. Completing the exterior upgrades are a body-color hard shell spare tire cover that replaces the original vinyl cover. Keen observers will notice the SH-AWD badge on the tailgate as one of the few visual cues to what lies underneath. Interior enhancements include reupholstered Milano leather seats and a grey wood applique on the door panels and dash.
The “Super Handling SLX” will be displayed at the RADwood Car Show alongside a 1991 NSX (VIN: 00052) – the earliest known NSX in North America, a 1986 Integra Coupe from the Acura Museum in Torrance, CA and an original (unmodified) 1996 Acura SLX – owned by collector and Acura enthusiast Tyson Hugie.
The RADwood Car Show, founded in 2017 by automotive journalists Bradley Brownell, Art Cevantes, Lane Skelton and Rick Deacon, celebrates the cars and car culture of the 1980s and ‘90s. While most car shows tend to focus on the exotic and ultra-valuable, RADwood places special importance on the eclectic and the unexpected.
Build Process & Team
The “Super Handling SLX” reimagining was led by Acura engineers and Pikes Peak racing drivers James Robinson, Paul Hubers and Jordan Guitar. Beginning with a 1997 Acura SLX “donor car,” the Ohio-based team separated the body and frame to assess the feasibility of the powertrain swap. With the original SLX’s longitudinally mounted 3.2-liter V6 removed, it was confirmed the biggest challenge would be fitting a transverse mounted engine between the SUV’s frame rails.
Once frame restoration was complete, the team began work to transplant the RDX’s 2.0-liter turbocharged engine, 10-speed automatic transmission and the latest generation of Acura’s Super Handling All-Wheel Drive. New front and rear subframes were welded to the SUV’s original boxed ladder frame, and the SLX’s solid rear axle was replaced with the RDX’s performance-oriented multi-link independent rear suspension.
To give the exterior appearance a fresh take, Performance Red Pearl, from Acura’s current color palette, was selected as the primary exterior color as it nicely mirrors Radiant Red – a color offered on the 1996 SLX. Champagne Silver was chosen for the bumpers, fenders and lower trim – a trademark look for ‘90s SUVs like the SLX.
The Donor Car
The SLX used for the build, a 1997 model originally painted Fir Green Metallic, was previously owned by Acura enthusiast and collector Tyson Hugie. A lifelong fan of the Acura brand, Hugie still owns his first car, a ‘94 Acura Legend Coupe that has seen over 572,000 miles and 38 states including Alaska. In addition to the Legend Coupe, Hugie’s collection includes a ‘94 Legend Sedan, a ‘92 Integra GS-R, and a ‘92 Formula Red NSX he bought just days before his 30th birthday. His most recent addition, a Radiant Red ’96 SLX, replaced the car that became the “Super Handling SLX”.
Hugie, along with his ‘96 SLX, make a cameo in the “Super Handling SLX” Flashback Forward video, with Hugie playing himself – a young enterprising collector of vintage Acuras.
