Moonlight on the Atlantic at Nags Head, North Carolina
In my mind I'm goin' to Carolina
Can't you see the sunshine
Can't you just feel the moonshine...
(Carolina in My Mind, James Taylor)
Can you see the moonbeam
And the colour of the lights
They're like flowers blooming in motion
Watching them fade
The last fireworks of the night
I begin to wake
To relive this memory
When the answer is clear and beyond belief
There's a gift of love
That awaits the final day
But tonight
Tonight
Under the moonlight with the one you love
Under the big sky for the one you love
Riding under the moonlight with the one you love
Going places together tonight...
Stars light up the coastline
And we'll feel this way
For today
And for all time...

Outer Banks, NC | 10K Road Trip Vlog Day 30
We spent two days exploring the Outer Banks of North Carolina. We've heard amazing things about the islands from friends and locals, so we had to check it out for ourselves. And it did not disappoint!
From the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse and Bodie Island Lighthouse to the beaches and beautiful sunrises and sunsets, this was an unforgettable experience!
We camped at the Oregon Inlet Campground which is a great location for a few reasons. First, it's close to town. Just a 10-minute drive to Nag's Head and all the restaurants and amenities there. Second, it's on the beach, but protected by dunes. You walk up over the dunes right onto the beach. And third, it's inexpensive. At the time of this video (June 2017), it was only $28/night. We recommend staying here. Check out availability here:
We recognize that our experience in OBX is different from usual. Most people rent a giant beach house with their family and spend a week doing family excursions like mini-golf and the high ropes course. We, however, do not have any family here and we are on a pretty tight budget, so we did all the free and inexpensive things like camping, hanging out on the beach, and visiting lighthouses.
Here are the timestamps for the things we did and places we went to visit in Outer Banks, NC:
0:46 - Setting up Camp at Oregon Inlet Campground and exploring the beach
2:23 - Bodie Island Lighthouse (and kites)
4:36 - Sunrise on the Outer Banks
5:16 - Stars and Milky Way pictures from the beach
5:32 - Exploring another beach
6:09 - Cape Hatteras Lighthouse (climbing to the top - Isa's scared of heights so tell her how awesome she is for going up to the top!)
9:42 - Pea Island National Wildlife Refuge
11:06 - Jennette's Pier and Aquarium
11:29 - Exploring another beach and saving a jellyfish
12:22 - Jockey's Ridge for sunset (absolute must-do!)
This is Day 30 and 31 of our 10,000 mile road trip across the US, but honestly our day count is getting a little fuzzy, so I'm just calling this Day 30 to keep it simple.

What's going on here?
We quit our jobs, left New York City, bought a car, and decided to spend the summer driving around the US. The plan is to hit at least 35 states and cover more than 10,000 miles. Watch from the beginning here:

Jockey's Ridge State Park (Sand Dunes), OBX, NC pt 1 4K Drone
Part one of my recent flight over Jockey's Ridge State Park in Kittyhawk, NC. This park was made to protect the enormous sand dunes on the Outer Banks of North Carolina's coast. This is just down the road from where the Wright Brother's had their first flight and is where one of the world's largest hang-gliding schools is located. It was after I landed and was packing up that I found out that it's illegal to fly here (that's what the ranger said at least, though if they want it to be illegal, they should register it with the FAA, because the FAA had no issue with me flying there!) My gimbal wouldn't pan up and down during this flight because I still had it teathered to my phone, so it's not a perfect vid, but still cool.
In this part I take off in the forested area and fly out over the dunes and East towards the water. You can see Kittyhawk Kites' building and the Atlantic Ocean. In Part II I go out to view the Sound on the other side of the island.

Gabrielle was not the kind of storm that will leave behind widespread damage. For the folks here, more of an annoyance than a cause for alarm. But, the high water we found shows just how vulnerable these outer banks are to any kind of severe weather. JB, the AP, Nags Head, NC.

Outer Banks, NC - RV Living
We finally made it to the Outer Banks!!! For us, this was one of those places that held an almost mystical value and had been on our radar to visit since the day we purchased our Airstream, so we are doing our happy dance (internally) to have this dream become a reality. To keep things within our budget we stay in two of the areas four Hatteras National Seashore campgrounds - Frisco Campground and Oregon Inlet Campground. We take the ferry over to the island of Ocracoke, which ends up being a saga in itself, but once we get there we thoroughly enjoy our time exploring the village, lighthouse, campground, and beach. We also visit the Wright Brothers Memorial and learn about man's first flight, Jockey Ridge State Park to climb the East Coast's tallest sand dune, and have an unparalleled donut experience thanks to Duck Donuts. We meet up with friends where TJ has the opportunity to do some fishing while Bri climbs the Bodie Lighthouse. In the end, we are glad for all the detours that brought us here at just the right time!

Motocross at the Beach - Outer Banks, NC
WATCH IN 720P. Trail and dune riding on the Outer Banks of North Carolina. We aired down the tires on our CRF450 and KX450 dirt bikes and took them in the sand. Special permission was give for us to ride this private property in Corolla and it was a one time thing. NO TRESPASSING.
Back to the Banks
I have never really been fond of the beach. The sand got in your shorts and shoes. The salt air made everything sticky. When you swam in the ocean, the salt water burned your eyes and left a bad taste in your mouth. Growing up, I spent many a summer at the beach. Whether it was at a little known Minnesott Beach on the Neuse River at my grandparent's cottage, or camping on the tourist filled Myrtle Beach with my parents, I can almost say I grew up at the beach, or at least near the beach. As much fun as that might sound, I really didn't like the beach. Once I had kids of my own and we started going places, it got to the point that I almost loathed the beach. I avoided it almost at all cost. The times that I did go, I went out of my way to avoid the sand and salt water.
But as I have grown older, I have come to realize that I only loathed the beach because I didn't really understand it. I never took the time to get to know it for what it really was and the beauty that it truly holds. I never had the foresight to look beyond the things I disliked about it and immerse myself into the wondrous place it really is. Paddling in the basins, lagoons, sounds and coastal backwaters has reconnected me with the beach. It brought back a flood of memories from my childhood that I wouldn't trade for all the riches in the world. It has allowed me to see the beach and the ocean with new eyes and accept the fact that in everything you dislike, you can always find something to like and in everything you like there are things you dislike. (I still hate sand in my shorts and I swear sand fleas were put here by God to torture us) I have been to the coastal waters three times this year, and more times in the last year than I have in the previous 25. It is becoming one of my favorite places to visit.
On Valentine's weekend Ladybug and I found ourselves again traveling by ferry across the Pamlico Sound to that thin ribbon of sand dunes and tidal marsh on the Outer Banks. This time we were on a mission to Ocracoke to pick up a kayak I purchased for Ladybug from an outfitter on the island. It afforded us a chance to see the Ocracoke Lighthouse and visit a part of the Banks that we had not been to in a long time. We spent the remainder of our weekend in Kitty Hawk and Manteo before making a quick stop on the way home in Plymouth to scout out an upcoming trip in April. Even though the weather really didn't cooperate with us to the point that we were able to get in a little paddling, we still had a wonderful weekend making memories that I will tuck away along with all the rest I have that I wouldn't trade for anything.

Ocracoke island.
Join us on another amazing adventure to the outer banks in North Carolina on Ocracoke Island. We had some amazing hikes around the island, beautiful sunrise beach walks, swimming in the massive ocean, and enjoyed some of the local cuisine with some good craft beer. We went blue crab hunting at night where we learn the importance to using red light to not confuse hatching sea turtles that only live at the rate of 1 in 10,000. We had a crab boil of the freshest crabs and even brought some home to share. The best part is we saved a baby kitten without a mother that was being followed by a land crab and more than likely would have died, we named him Black Beard because Ocracoke Island was the Island that the pirate Black Beard was captured and beheaded on in his final stand.
Jockeys Ridge State Park - NC State Park Passport Stamp 22/41
Jockeys Ridge State Park was the 22nd state park we visited on our journey. Wow! What a cool place - definitely one of the most unique places in this part of the country. The park office was quaint and, of course, super friendly and they were just as excited as our kids with getting the passports stamped :) I was afraid of bringing my camera because of all the sand, but the iPhone did a pretty good job! There are a bunch of trails you can take to get to the dunes, but once you get to the top of the first, you can see for what seems like forever. Because it was HOT and windy (the blowing sand sort of hurt) we decided not to venture too deep into the desert and just took some time to admire the beautiful landscape from the top of the tallest dune. Definitely worth the trip. And Liam keeps talking about how this is one of his favorite parks.
