I'm With The Band is a witty and timely response to our changing political landscape.
An Englishman, a Northern Irishman, a Scotsman and a Welshman walked into a recording studio and created The Union. Commercially successful and critically acclaimed, this pioneering Indie-rock band is now on the verge of breaking-up. When financial disaster strikes and Scottish guitarist Barry leaves the band, artistic differences go head to head with alliances that run deep. Can The Union survive?

Edinburgh Showcase 2017: 'The Whip Hand' by Traverse Theatre Company & Birmingham Repertory Theatre
A Traverse Theatre Company and Birmingham Repertory Theatre co-production in association with National Theatre of Scotland.
The Traverse is Scotland’s premiere new writing theatre. Formed in 1963 by a group of passionate enthusiasts, the venue was founded to extend the spirit of the Edinburgh festivals throughout the year. Today the Traverse nurtures emerging talent, produces award-winning new plays and offers a curated programme of the best work from the UK and beyond; spanning theatre, dance, performance, music and spoken word. With two custom-built and versatile theatre spaces, the Traverse’s home in Edinburgh’s city centre is a powerhouse of new work for, and of, our time.
'The Whip Hand' is an explosive new play by multi-award winning Douglas Maxwell. Dougie has just turned 50 and his family is throwing him a party. But it’s him who has a surprise - a bombshell proposal. He wants his ex-wife Arlene to back his new endeavour. He wants to serve a global cause, to make right a terrible wrong, even if it puts their daughter’s future at risk. They can all sense a swindle, but Dougie won’t back down. He is convinced this is his only chance to do something truly glorious, but his motivation may not be as pure as it seems.

Crocodile Fever by Meghan Tyler | #TravFest19
Fuelled by Taytos, gin, 80s tunes and a chainsaw, it’s the Devlin sisters versus the world. It can’t end happily, but it can end gloriously.
Northern Ireland, 1989. A farmhouse window smashes, and rebellious Fianna Devlin crashes back into the life of her pious sister Alannah.
Like Thelma and Louise’s punk daughter, Meghan Tyler’s surreal Crocodile Fever is a grotesque black comedy celebrating sisterhood whilst reminding us that the pressure cooker of The Troubles is closer than we imagine.

This is very definitely the modern world in Douglas Maxwell's of-the-moment new play, which brings the desperation of a broken Britain close to home. Eve Nicol's punchy production does this by way of a cross-generational confrontation between a pop culture academic who's lost his mojo and an asylum seeker in mod's clothing possessing the hyped-up zeal of a convert.
Nebli Basani is Jimmy, who has bought into what he sees as the quintessential British lifestyle statement. His mohair suit, pork pie hat and parka may be box-fresh, but the ideas that sired them are as second-hand as his name. This is something Paul McCole's Stevie is only too glad to tell Jimmy when he turns up at his front door looking for a signature, both for Stevie's largely forgotten book on mod culture, and for the substantive statement that will give Jimmy access all areas to Britain. A rude awakening awaits them both, alas, as the auto-destructive energy that fires them erupts into a turbo-charged culture clash that calls the authenticity of both into question.
There is fun to be had at the start of the play when Jimmy lollops into view on Jen McGinley's living room set, with Basani lending him a manic edge, motor-mouthed, pop-eyed and totally wired. As Stevie, McCole presents an equally tragi-comic foil, who is jolted into getting back to his own roots. Beyond the initial comic value of the set-up, ideas of identity, belonging and everyday tribalism are laid bare throughout the play's 75-minute short, sharp shock.
With the action punctuated by Michael John McCarthy's meaty, beaty, big and bouncy sound design, there is a ballsiness at play that recalls the sort of street-smart work that infilt

This captivating new verbatim play uncovers a cross-cultural story that began in early 80s Glasgow, long before the 'tug-of-love' tale that hit headlines in 2006, when a young girl left Scotland for Pakistan.

I know my boy. I’d know if something had happened to him.
Maddy and Rory are devoted parents to 3-year-old Joshua, committed to keeping him happy and safe. But when an everyday visit to a supermarket café turns into a far more troubling incident, their trust even in those closest to them is shattered. Fear and doubt consume them, until they reach a savage breaking point.
Gut is a taut psychological thriller that explores who we can trust with our children. And whether it’s more dangerous not to trust at all.
Written by Fringe First award-winning playwright Frances Poet (Adam), Gut was shortlisted for the Bruntwood Prize for Playwriting, and is directed by award-winning Traverse Associate Director Zinnie Harris.

Still No Idea | Trailer
Lisa and Rachael want to make a show, but there's a problem: they don’t have any ideas. So who do they turn to? The Great British Public of course!
Still No Idea is Lisa and Rachael's quest: a mischievous look at two friends searching for drama, action and a story to tell. Part-verbatim theatre, part-confession, part-comedy sketch show with a bit of singing and dancing thrown in. Turns out getting the public to write your story is quite an adventure.
All performances of Still No Idea will be Relaxed - aiming to create a space for everyone, especially people who would benefit from a more informal experience. This means we'll take a relaxed attitude to noise in the auditorium; you are welcome to respond to the show in whatever way feels natural. Latecomers will be admitted, and you can enter and exit the auditorium when needed.

What Girls Are Made Of | #TravFest19
Following a sold-out world premiere run and unprecedented demand leaving people queuing for hours at Traverse Festival 2018, Cora Bissett’s hit show What Girls Are Made Of returns in 2019, bursting out of the Traverse walls into the Assembly Hall on The Mound.
This epic piece of gig theatre, written and performed by Bissett, charts her rollercoaster journey from indie-kid hopeful in the 90s to the wised-up woman she is today. Based on her meticulous teenage diaries, the show celebrates the euphoric highs (including touring with Radiohead and partying with Blur) and epic lows of her young life as lead singer in the tipped-for-the-top band Darlingheart, interspersed with the personal losses and gains of her adult life.
Directed by former Traverse Artistic Director Orla O’Loughlin and performed with a live backing band of actors/musicians Susan Bear, Simon Donaldson and Harry Ward, What Girls Are Made Of features a killer setlist studded with songs by 90s indie legends and inspirational female artists – from Nirvana to Dolly Parton to Patti Smith. And, for the first time, the run will feature special dates with the original Darlingheart drummer, Cathryn Stirling.
Winner: 2018 Scotsman Fringe First award
Nominee: Best Female Performance, Best Production, Best Music - CATS Awards 2019
