ELF solar car-bike for driver + 2 kids, equals 1800mpg
It looks like a micro-car. It rides like an electric-assist bike. The ELF (“electric, light, fun”) is a solar car-bike hybrid that will keep you out of the rain, or from breaking a sweat, and perhaps convince you to jettison your car for all those trips around town (and to get into shape while you’re at it).
Inspired by solar/human-powered aircraft pioneer Paul MacCready, decades ago Rob Cotter began experimenting with human-powered vehicles. He left a job at Porsche to consult though things slowed down in the nineties when ”people were more interested in minivans and SUVs and things.”
He decided the moment had arrived when, at the end of the nineties he began consulting for the New York City bike sharing, “and realized that if NYC’s putting in about 300 miles of new bike trails there’s a market for vehicles like this,” explains Cotter, “Bicycles that could get people up the hills easier, get them out of the weather, be safer, not tip over, carry passengers, carry a payload, have turn signals, brake lights, all of those things and just started going in that direction from that point on.”
In 2012 he founded Organic Transit- alongside his wife Maureen Costello- in an old furniture store in downtown Durham, North Carolina. To move things along quickly, they launched using an agile design process. “Originally we sold about 50 on kickstarter. We knew we were losing money on each one, but it allowed us to get the vehicles out there and make the changes. So since that time 3 years ago we’ve made about 400 changes to the ELF.”
Today, the ELF is a 160 pound (72.5kg) vehicle that can carry up to two adults (or an adult plus 2 children) or an adult plus 500+ lbs (226 kg) of cargo (there’s space in back for a dozen bags of groceries. Starting at $7,000, it’s classified as a 'bicycle' by US law so it can't legally go faster than 20 mph on just electric power (though pedaling and hills will speed things up).
With a lithium-ion battery and mid-motor drive, it has a range of 48 miles per charge (and further if you pedal). The rooftop solar panel will recharge the battery with 7 to 8 hours of sun or the battery can be removed and plugged into a wall for a 2.5 hour charge.
Since it’s technically a bicycles, the ELF can be driven on bike paths and parked on sidewalks. “So our goal was to be able to take a car-like experience and turn it into a bicycle,” explains Cotter. “This will go anywhere a bicycle will go, all bicycles can ride on many streets, all secondary roads and things like that. It’s like a car except that it’s 160 pounds so it’s a car that you can actually pedal. And the nice thing about it when you’re zooming along somewhere you can go point to point you can go door to door just pull right up to the building and park it in the bike rack up front.”

The Color of Education
Nikole Hannah-Jones has spent years chronicling the way official policy has created-and maintains-racial segregation in housing and schools. Throughout her time at New York Times Magazine, her deeply personal reports on the black experience in America have offered a compelling case for addressing racial injustice and equity.
She was named a 2017 MacArthur Genius Grant Fellow (one of only 24 people chosen, globally) for reshaping national conversations around education reform and for her reporting on racial re-segregation in our schools.
This is her latest honor in a growing list of notable accolades including a Peabody, a Polk Award, and, in 2017, a National Magazine Award for her story on choosing a school for her daughter in a segregated city.
She is currently writing a book on school segregation called The Problem We All Live With, to be published on the One World imprint of Penguin/Random House.
Cosponsored by Duke Policy Bridge, the Cook Center for Social Equity, and the Public School Forum of NC, An Evening with Nikole Hannah-Jones is the inaugural event of their upcoming Color of Education annual summit, a statewide convening on race and education in North Carolina. In 2019 and beyond, Color of Education (#ColorofEducation) will evolve into a yearly, day-long summit of workshops and conversations that bring together educators, policymakers, national experts and other key stakeholders focused on achieving racial equity in education.
I-73 to I-85 to US 220 Urban Loop Greensboro, NC (Exits 3 to 77)
This video begins at Bryan Boulevard (Exit 3) in northwestern Greensboro, NC near the Piedmont Triad International Airport and concludes at Old Randleman Road in southern Guilford County. In the beginning of the video, the exit numbers are I-840's which is planned to run on the northern half of the Greensboro Urban Loop. In this video, you'll see the most confusing of stretch of road in the Eisenhower Interstate System. When the southern portion of the Urban Loop was completed, NCDOT had planned to move I-40 off of its routing through central Greensboro onto the new loop. This was to ensure that traffic heading to the Triangle, Wilmington, D.C., and New York would not have to go through the infamous Death Valley in Greensboro. I-40 was moved off its old routing and placed onto the Urban Loop in early 2008. The old road was renamed Business 40. However, many travelers and area residents complained to NCDOT for the confusion the new routing caused. In early 2009, NCDOT began to move I-40 back onto its original road. However, some shields, mile markers, and signs still indicate that I-40 is on the Urban Loop. Basically, the Urban Loop is one large mess (or... clusterf***) that is a pain to analyze if you don't live in the Triad. I hope you enjoy! Read on further for a brief history from Wikipedia:
In 1991, as Congress worked on reauthorization of the Surface Transportation Act, the Bluefield-to-Huntington Highway Association wanted an interstate highway, which would be called Interstate 73, to run from Detroit to Charleston, South Carolina. In West Virginia, the highway would run alongside U.S. Highway 52, which was only two lanes but was still being used to transport coal from mines to barges on the Ohio River. The influential Robert Byrd, at the time West Virginia's senior senator, chaired the Senate Appropriations Committee, but even Byrd said funding for such a highway would be hard to find. In North Carolina, Marc Bush of the Greensboro Area Chamber of Commerce admitted the plan would benefit his area, but said it was not a priority.
The Intermodal Surface Transportation Efficiency Act of 1991 (ISTEA) defined High Priority Corridor 5, the I-73/74 north--south Corridor from Charleston, South Carolina, through Winston-Salem, North Carolina, to Portsmouth, Ohio, to Cincinnati, Ohio, and Detroit, Michigan. This would provide for a single corridor from Charleston, splitting at Portsmouth, with I-74 turning west to its current east end in Cincinnati, and I-73 continuing north to Detroit.
In North Carolina, any new construction would require more money than the state had available, but Walter C. Sprouse Jr., executive director of the Randolph County Economic Development Corporation pointed out that most of the route of I-73 included roads already scheduled for improvements which would make them good enough for interstate designation. A connector between Interstate 77 and U.S. 52 at Mt. Airy was planned, and U.S. 52 from Mt. Airy to Winston-Salem and U.S. 311 from Winston-Salem to High Point were four-lane divided highways. A U.S. 311 bypass of High Point was planned, which would eventually connect to U.S. 220 at Randleman. I-73 would follow U.S. 220 to Rockingham. Another possibility was following Interstate 40 from Winston-Salem to Greensboro. In Winston-Salem, congestion on U.S. 52 was expected to be a problem. The route through High Point was approved in May 1993.
Story of the Jaguar | Nica Ceramic Art | Nicaragua | Pottery | Raleigh | NC
The story of the jaguar holds a special place in Nicaraguan culture and pottery. Listen as Paul explains this unique ceramic art sculpture and the meaning it holds for the Nicoya Indians.
NICA Ceramic Art and Gallery Nica were born out of the Peace Corps experience of founder Paul H. Devoti in the indigenous pottery pueblo of San Juan de Oriente, Nicaragua. The mission of NICA Ceramic Art is to expose the world to the ceramic art work of the master artisans of the pueblo as well as the Nicoyan Indian heritage behind their craft.
The methods in which NICA Ceramic Art achieves these goals are:
* The Artist Exchange Program: Over the past 12 years, NICA Ceramic Art has sponsored over 40 artisan visits to the North Carolina studio. The artist exchange program creates an environment for featured artists to live and work in the United States where they can share their unique creations with the art-collecting community. Visiting artists create their own body of work in a variety of techniques that express both their cultural heritage as well as their creative innovations.
* Nica Ceramic Art: This website showcases broad collections where the work of a number of master artisans of San Juan de Oriente, Nicaragua are represented. These collections support the range of technique and artists that make San Juan de Oriente ceramic art one of the finest pottery-producing pueblos in the world. Whereas the art events feature the work of one visiting artist, the website is a representation of the community as a whole.
The fulfillment of these goals creates positive economic benefits for San Juan de Oriente artisans while opening the collector community to the world-class cultural and contemporary pottery of San Juan de Oriente, Nicaragua.
Recently, our artists have won the ‘Best in Show’ ceramic/pottery category at the 2015 Armonk Outdoor Art Show in New York, 2015 CenterFest art festival in Durham, NC, and the Ann Arbor Art Show in Michigan.

Highway Hero S2-E13: Raleigh Drive II
North Carolina: Battleground State
First it was Wisconsin. Now it's North Carolina that is redefining the term battleground state. On one side: a right-wing government enacting laws that are changing the face of the state. On the other: citizen protesters who are fighting back against what they fear is a radical takeover. This crucible of conflict reflects how the battle for control of American politics is likely to be fought for the foreseeable future: not in Washington, DC, but state by state.
This week on Moyers & Company, State of Conflict: North Carolina offers a documentary report from a state that votes both blue and red and sometimes purple (Romney carried it by a whisker in 2012, Obama by an eyelash in 2008). Now, however, Republicans hold the governor's mansion and both houses of the legislature and they are steering North Carolina far to the right: slashing taxes on corporations and the wealthy, providing vouchers to private schools, cutting unemployment benefits, refusing to expand Medicaid and rolling back electoral reforms, including voting rights.
At the heart of this conservative onslaught sits a businessman who is so wealthy and powerful that he is frequently described as the state's own Koch brother. Art Pope, whose family fortune was made via a chain of discount stores, has poured tens of millions of dollars into a network of foundations and think tanks that advocate a wide range of conservative causes. Pope is also a major funder of conservative political candidates in the state.
Pope's most ardent opponent is the Reverend William Barber, head of the state chapter of the NAACP, who says the right-wing state government has produced an avalanche of extremist policies that threaten health care, that threaten education [and] that threaten the poor. Barber's opposition to the legislature as well as the Pope alliance became a catalyst for the protest movement that became known around the country as Moral Mondays.
State of Conflict is more than a local story. It offers a case study of what may be the direction of American politics for years, perhaps decades, to come.
State of Conflict is a collaboration between Okapi Productions, LLC and Schumann Media Center, Inc., headed by Bill Moyers, which supports independent journalism and media programs to advance public understanding of the critical issues facing democracy.
