The Rhode Island Trolley Car Line
The Rhode Island Trolley Car Line – Yesterday & Today – Student Video Project
The 82 Line Streetcar was the original link that allowed strong communities to develop along the Route 1 Corridor in Prince George’s County and linked them to Downtown Washington, DC up until the mid-twentieth century. While the Metro Green Line exists today to serve the now transitioning suburban area, the streetcar’s removal had a big impact on the communities it served. Providence R.I. to Atlanta, GA USA on Amtrak, March 21 & 22, 2015
These are scenes taken while traveling on Amtrak's Northeast Regional and Crescent trains. The Northeast Regional took me to New York Penn station, and the Crescent took me to Atlanta's Brookwood Station, with longer stops in Washington, D.C. (to change from one electric locomotive to two diesel-electriclocomotives) and in Charlotte N.C., to service the train.
I got some real wintertime views of the right of way at the beginning, followed by some views of New York City and other cities along the way.
At 12:55 you can see the procedure begin to uncouple the electric locomotive, and then I went inside Union Station and out the front for a quick view of the US Capitol dome, surrounded by scaffolding. By the time I returned to the train, the replacement locomotives were in place, and you can read what GE put on the side of each of them. Much of the journey on the Crescent was in the dark, but the sky brightened up just enough for some views of the final miles to Atlanta. My apologies for the focusing problems caused by the low light levels outside! You can see downtown Suwannee at 22:30, and we got to race a MARTA rapid rail train at 23:00. Ga. highway 400 can be seen at 24:06. Thanks for watching!

Providence, RI, circa 1975
This is a real treat, especially if you know Providence, RI. This is Super 8 film I shot probably around 1975. The old train station had been more or less abandoned by then - it's now the site of the Capital Grille and all the other restaurants. The Paris Theater, a movie theater, showed the finest is all male adult entertainment - you can only see part of the old marquee. There's the Old Stone Bank, back when it was a bank, and the Hospital Trust building, which still stands, of course. It's safe to say, though, that this Providence just simply doesn't exist any more.
Providence, Rhode Island
Providence is the capital and most populous city in Rhode Island. Founded in 1636, it is one of the oldest cities in the United States. It is located in Providence County, and is the third-largest city in the New England region after Boston and Worcester. Providence has a city population of 182,911 and is part of the 37th-largest metropolitan population in the country, with an estimated population of 1,600,856, exceeding that of Rhode Island by about 60%, as it extends into southern Massachusetts. This can be considered in turn to be part of the Greater Boston commuting area, which contains 7.6 million people. The city is situated at the mouth of the Providence River, at the head of Narragansett Bay.
Providence was founded by Roger Williams, a religious exile from the Massachusetts Bay Colony. He named the area in honor of God's merciful Providence, which he believed was responsible for revealing such a haven for him and his followers to settle. After being one of the first cities in the country to industrialize, Providence became noted for its jewelry and silverware industry. Today, the city of Providence is home to eight hospitals and seven institutions of higher learning, which has shifted the city's economy into service industries, though it still retains significant manufacturing activity.

MBTA MARATHON: Trains and Trolleys of Boston
Look at the VARIETY OF TRANSPORTATION BOSTON HAS!!!
-
The Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority, often referred to as the MBTA or simply The T, is the public operator of most bus, subway, commuter rail and ferry systems in the greater Boston, Massachusetts, area. Officially a body politic and corporate, and a political subdivision of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, it was formed in 1964. Its immediate predecessor, the Metropolitan Transit Authority (MTA), was immortalized by The Kingston Trio in the popular folk-protest lament M.T.A. Locals call it simply The T, after its logo, the letter T in a circle, adopted in the 1960s and inspired by the Stockholm Metro. In 2008, the system averaged 1.3 million passenger trips each weekday, of which the subway averaged 598,200, making it the fourth busiest subway system in the United States. The Green Line and Ashmont--Mattapan High Speed Line of the T comprise the busiest light-rail system in the U.S, with a weekday ridership of 255,100.
-
The MBTA is one of only two U.S. transit agencies that operate all of the five major types of transit vehicles: regional (commuter) rail trains, heavy rapid transit (subway/elevated) trains, light rail vehicles (trolleys), electric trolleybuses and motor buses. The other is Philadelphia's Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority (SEPTA).
