Trunyan Cemetery in Kintamani, Bali
The indigenous people live in the nearby Trunyan village on the slopes of Mount Batur in Bangli regency. Also known as the Bali Aga, they are said to be the first population to settle in the Mt. Batur area. Curious stories that I had heard about the place encouraged me to go and see it for myself. Was it true that the dead were not buried but instead simply laid to rest on the ground? And that the cemetery did not smell at all unpleasant though the local practices should suggest otherwise?

TRUNYAN BALI: A SHOCKING CEMETERY IN INDONESIA
Trunyan Village Cemetery in Bali was a challenging experience for me. We rarely see dead bodies in the western world, and we have a very finite view on death. Trunyan village is located deep in the centre of Bali, nestled beside a crater lake and mount Batur, and is quite hard to get to.
Here, they still follow a tradition that was set in place over a thousand years ago. They place their dead under a Terumanyan Tree, supposedly the last of it's kind, to mask it's beautiful scent.
The legend says that the smell of the tree was so sweet, that people from all over the island would come to try and find its source. The village of Trunyan was overrun with travellers. A man arrived and met a woman, he wanted to marry her. She insisted that before they were to be wed, the man has to find a way to stop the smell of the tree. The man found a very unique way to do so, and so began the tradition of placing dead bodies under the tree.
Now, we can visit the cemetery and see death face to face. There are 11 exposed graves beside the famous tree. The people living here are the descendants of the original Balinse people called Aga, and both the village and the tree derive their name from their language. Taru meaning 'tree' and Menyan meaning 'nice smell'.
There are a lot of poor reviews of this place. The locals are having a hard time appropriately managing the travellers that arrive. It's also quite small, and depending if anyone has died recently, there may or may not be a decomposing body. I have Yansu's contact below. I highly recommend you contact him.

Trunyan or Terunyan is a Balinese village (banjar) located on the eastern shore of Lake Batur, a caldera lake in Kintamani Regency, central Bali, Indonesia. The village is one of the most notable homes of the Bali Aga people, the others being the villages of Tenganan and Sambiran. Trunyan is notable for its peculiar treatment of dead bodies, in which they are placed on openly on the ground, simply covered with cloth and bamboo canopies, and left to decompose. The influence of a nearby tree is said to remove the putrid smell of the corpses.
When we visit Bali Indonesia, there are some unique places that we can visit. One of them is Pura Tanah Lot. It's a sacred temple on the beach.

TARU MENYAN TREE
A framed portrait was placed besides a corpse that was just laid on the ground. All of the deceased's belongings were planted underneath the ground surface. The view can be found in a cemetery in Trunyan Village, Bali.
Balinese are generally known to bury or burn dead bodies in an expensive Ngaben ceremony. However, in Trunyan Village nearby Batur Lake and Kintamani, dead bodies were just laid on the shallow recess on the ground and left to decompose in the open air. The bodies were arranged side by side, only covered with clothes and bamboo cages. The bamboo cages are called Ancak Sajii and are used to protect the bodies from hungry wild animals.
Not far from the location, skulls were arranged in a line near a big Taru Menyan tree. Taru means tree and Menyan means fragrant smell. During the ancient Majapahit reign, the fragrance was said to have blown by the wind up to the Java Island. Legend says that the trees are neutralizing the stinking smell of the deceased bodies. The Taru Menyan trees are only grown in this village (TEMPO.CO, Jakarta )

Seeing the Dead People in Trunyan, Bali
If you are in a group of 10 people and can share the cost of the boat then this might be a cool thing to see when you are in Bali... but $100 for a 15 minute boat ride to the grave site it is WAY over priced (in Indonesia anyway) if you just go with 2-3 people. When we went there were no fresh bodies so we can't confirm whether or not the myth is true that the Menyan tree masks the smell of rotting flesh... but we sure did see human remains. The place isn't very big though, as you can see.

The village of Trunyan is squeezed tightly between the lake and the outer crater rim of Batur, an almighty volcano in Kintamani. This is a Bali Aga village, inhabited by descendants of the original Balinese, the people who predate the arrival of the Hindu Majapahit kingdom in the 16th century. It is famous for the Pura Pancering Jagat temple, but unfortunately visitors are not allowed inside. There are also a couple of traditional Bali Aga-style dwellings, and a large banyan tree, which is said to be more than 1,100 years old. At Kuban sub-village close to Trunyan is a mysterious cemetery that is separated by the lake and accessible only by boat - there is no path along the steep walls of the crater rim.
The village of Trunyan itself is situated at the edge of Batur Lake. This location is inaccessible except by boat, and it takes around half an hour across the calm waters. Getting to Lake Batur takes around two hours drive to the northeast of Denpasar along the main road to Buleleng and through Bangli Regency.
Unlike the Balinese people, the people of Trunyan do not cremate or bury their dead, but just lay them out in bamboo cages to decompose, although strangely there is no stench. A macabre collection of skulls and bones lies on the stone platform and the surrounding areas.
The dead bodies don't produce bad smells because of the perfumed scents from a huge Taru Menyan tree growing nearby. Taru means 'tree' and Menyan means 'nice smell'. The name of Terunyan was also derived from these two words.
The women from Trunyan are prohibited from going to the cemetery when a dead body is carried there. This follows the deeply rooted belief that if a woman comes to the cemetery while a corpse is being carried there, there will be a disaster in the village, for example a landslide or a volcanic eruption. Such events have been frequent in the village's history, but whether women had anything to do with it is a matter of opinion...

There are some unique ways to treat human bodies which was used on the island of Bali. One the most unique treatment process of bodies was found in Trunyan village. Trunyan Village is part of Kintamani district located on the shores of Lake Batur . The villagers are descendants of the original Age of Bali (Original Bali). With its unique cultural aspects of treating corpses, this village became a tourist destination.

A very unique sacred site and a bit macabre in Bali Lake Batur Kintamani . But what I saw and learnt on site was quite different than what all articles are saying about this place . lets get some facts straight here :
Actually Aga people ( pre dating actual Balinese ) generally burry their dead contrary to what it is said .
This particular cemetery is actually kind of a VVIP with only 11 places at the time.
The very few selected must fill drastic conditions to be allowed but mostly they have to be important people, married ,dead of natural causes ( not by accident or else), above 17, ethnically pure Aga from Trunyan etc...
The legend started about that famous tree spreading overwhelming sent thru out the island and beyond until someone decided to bury an important person there to somehow lessen the scent with decomposing body . At the end the 2 scent somehow neutralized each other and the place became sacred and allowed for just a few .
Most of other people are buried but none are cremated by tradition that precedes Hinduism practices.
A slightly bad note thought about the crazy price people will ask you to visit the site. Make sure to sharpen your negotiating skills . Prices go from 25 to 120 US for a visit with very basic structure . I would say up to 35 it is worth the trip. Also I wouldn't bring kids or sensitive people around this site because dead bodies and body parts are exposed.
Most All around Kintamani and Lake Batur and meeting people from one side to the other .One of the best panorama you ll ever see in your life.

Akan tetapi masyarakat trunyan bali menyebutkan bahwa bau tubuh tersebut di sedot langsung pohon kemenyan yang ada di atas makan tersebut.
Kuburan Terunyan ini juga terkenal dengan budaya indonesia yang masih terjaga, dan hanya ada di bali.
