Naha's Tsuboya district has been an Okinawan pottery center since the era of the Ryukyu Kingdom, and where many pottery workshops are still located. The Tsuboya Pottery Museum illustrates the history and the techniques of Tsuboya pottery.

Facility Information:
Hours: 10:00 to 18:00 (last entry at 17:30)
Closed: Mondays and December 28 to January 4
Admission: 315 yen

Access Information:
The Tsuboya Pottery District is located approximately 400 meters south of Kokusaidori Street in central Naha. One end of the district is located at the end of the Heiwadori shopping arcade, which begins on Kokusaidori. The other end of the district can get to in ten minute by walk from Asato Station along the Okinawa Monorail.

Tsuboya Pottery Street - tsuboya pottery - tsuboya pottery museum - tsuboya pottery festival

One of the best parts of Naha is this neighbourhood, a centre of ceramic production from 1682, when Ryūkyū kilns were consolidated here by royal decree. Most shops along this atmospheric street sell all the popular Okinawan ceramics, including shiisā (lion-dog roof guardians) and containers for serving awamori, the local firewater.

Japan Trip: Kokusaidori, shopping and entertainment street. Naha, Okinawa11 Moopon

Kokusaidori (literally International Road) is Naha's main street, stretching for around two kilometers through downtown Naha. The street takes its name from the former Ernie Pyle International Theater, a movie theater which was built along the road after the war.

Starting around the Naha Bus Terminal and Prefectural Hall, Kokusaidori is lined by restaurants, cafes, bars, hotels, boutiques, department stores and souvenir shops. Many shops are open until 11pm, and live Okinawa music is played at several restaurants..
If you are looking for even more shopping opportunities, you are encouraged to go into the colorful Heiwadori, Mutsumidori and Ichiba Hondori arcades, which branch off Kokusaidori around the intersection with Okieidori, halfway along the street. The shops in the arcade are smaller than those along Kokusaidori.

Access Information:
Kokusaidori Street is located right in central Naha. The street leads from the Naha Bus Terminal to Makishi Station on the Okinawa Monorail. It is also only a few steps away distance from the monorail's Kencho-mae and Miebashi Stations.

I was in Okinawa with one of my best friends, Claire, and we spent two days exploring this amazing place. We ate a lot, walked around and took in all the sights. It was truly magical, and one of my favorite destinations. The people in Okinawa are just so friendly and willing to help anyone!

Kokusai Street is located right in central Naha and a hot spot for tourists. Most stores are open everyday, generally between 1000-2300. Karaoke and nightclubs are open until past midnight (some karaoke centers are open 24 hours). Depending on when you go, there may be special festivities with one of the most famous ones being the 10,000 Eisa Festival held early August. I like to visit Kokusai Street whenever I'm on island for a chance to grab souvenirs for my friends and family in the US.

Japan Travel: Fun Okinawa! Fun Okinawa Culture at the Okinawa Prefectural Museum in Okinawa Main Island, Okinawa09

Japan’s southern island paradise has a rich and unique history which can learned here, at the Okinawa Prefectural Museum. Relocated in 2007, the museum is housed in a contemporary building in central Naha. There are two separate museums: a history museum and an art museum.

The history museum covers a wide time span: from before the time of the Ryukyu Kingdom to the modern times of today. The museum includes collections of natural history, folklore, crafts and archaeology. Due to the cast amount of Okinawa cultural information presented, visitors could spend a few hours exploring the facility.

The art museum is a bit smaller compared to the history museum. However the collections are displayed in multiple galleries, in art forms including sculptures, paintings, sketches and videos. There is a focus on local artists and themes. The art is rather modern. And there are special exhibitions which require additional fee for viewing.

Hours: 9:00 to 18:00 (until 20:00 on Fridays and Saturdays)
Last Entry is 30 minutes before closing time
Closed: Mondays (or the following day if Monday is a national holiday) as well as December 29th to 31st
Admission: 410 yen (history museum), 310 yen (art museum), separate fees for special exhibitions
Level of English: Good (history museum)

From Omoromachi Station a 10 minute walk.
By Bus:
From Naha Bus Center, board bus number 10. Depart the bus at the Kenritsu Hakubutsukan-mae (県立博物館前) bus stop. The cost is 230 yen. There are two to three buses every hour.
