Prayers offered at tsunami memorial for hundreds killed in 2004
Families who lost loved ones in the 2004 Asian tsunami gathered to pray for the dead in a small town in the southern tip of India's mainland on Friday, 10 years after the deadly wave killed 230-thousand people in the Indian Ocean region.
At the local cemetery in Manacudi, in Kanyakumari district, mourners laid flowers and held special prayers for their lost relatives.
The devastating tsunami of 26 December, 2004, killed more than six-thousand people in the state of Tamil Nadu.
In Manacudi, 125 people were killed, while nine people were reported missing.
Liguvariyal Daveed lost her son, two grandchildren and her mother in the disaster.
Originally from a fishing community, she said her family were now scared of the ocean and had moved away from it.
Special prayers for the victims and a procession were also held at the local church in Kanyakumari.
