Established in 1992 and opened to the public in 2006, it is managed by the United States Fish and Wildlife Service. A newer area, extending into northern Yamhill County, is located further west near the city of Gaston surrounding the former Wapato Lake.
Part of the network of National Wildlife Refuges (NWR), the Tualatin River refuge is one of only ten urban refuges in the United States. Habitats in the refuge include forested areas, wetlands, oak and pine grassland, and meadows, with mixed deciduous and coniferous forests common to Western Oregon. The refuge was established as an urban refuge to provide wetland, riparian, and upland habitats for a variety of migratory birds, threatened and endangered species, fish and other resident wildlife. The refuge is home to nearly 200 bird species and more than 70 other animal species.
A visitor center with exhibits and information about the refuge was opened in 2008 off of Oregon Route 99W near Sherwood in the Portland metropolitan area. Next to the center is the refuge's headquarters and an observation deck overlooking seasonal ponds. The refuge has nearly five miles of wildlife interpretive trails open to the public. Up to 50,000 waterfowl can be seen at the refuge during the winter months when officials flood portions of the refuge.

Southern Pacific 4449 P&W officer's special Sherwood to Tigard, Oregon 2006
Southern Pacific #4449 pulls a Portland and Western officer's special from Sherwood to Tigard, Oregon on June 11th, 2006. This was a private train not open to the public. Joining along later for the ride was recently painted ex Southern Pacific, SD9. This locomotive would be later used to load test, and break in, the 4449 (using dynamic brakes) after the steam engine had its main driver bearings replaced. The whistle on the 4449 sounds really nice in the suburbs of Portland.

Portland & Western's 2306 leads the Albina Local in Lake Oswego, Oregon Edited (11-04-2016)
Being filmed from N Square St. in Lake Oswego, Oregon, Portland & Western Railroad's 2306 leads the Albina Local west on the Wilsburg District near Tryon Creek and the Willamette River. If you like my video, like comment share and subscribe : )
Note. I originally saw the Albina Local parked near the Steel Bridge in Portland Oregon, and so I decided I'd head this thing off by riding TRIMET's 35 to Lake Oswego where I had a tasty doughnut at Nola Doughnuts in the middle of town.
Grant's Getaways: Oregon's First Wildlife Photographer
The best getaways offer scenic beauty, plentiful wildlife and teach you more about Oregon. You'll find all of that at a getaway in Hillsboro this summer through an exhibit and guided wildlife refuge tours that center on one of Oregon's earliest wildlife photographers.
Moments with wildlife are best when they take your breath away! That's exactly what happened to me when I entered the driveway of the Tualatin River National Wildlife Refuge near Sherwood, Oregon. And there's more magic indoors at the nearby Washington County Museum in Hillsboro.

Grant's Getaways: Caring for Oregon Wildlife at the Wildlife Center of the North Oregon Coast
It’s a good bet that you have walked a stretch of beach along Oregon’s gorgeous, nearly-400 mile-long coastline where chances are also good that you’ve crossed paths with wildlife that soar overhead or wing past you in a dizzying blur. From eagles to peregrines to scores of pelicans, sea birds by thousands either pass along the Oregon Coast or nest atop Oregon’s rocky islands and shorelines.
They are certainly a treat to watch – but when trouble arrives and threatens survival, the lucky ones land at a place you’ve likely not heard about: the Wildlife Center of the North Coast, where folks offer helping hands. It is a trauma ward for birds on the brink – the ones that won’t make it without intervention.
