Diving Tulamben (Bali) Indonesia (HD)
Our first day of diving starts with a 2½ hour road trip to the small fishing village of Tulamben, on the northeast coast of the main island.
Dive 1 - USAT Liberty:
Originally launched on 19 June 1918 as the USS Liberty, this vessel was assigned to the US Army, just prior to Americas entry into World War II, as an Army Transportation Services vessel (USAT).
On 11 January 1942, while en route from Australia to the Philippines with a cargo of railway parts and rubber, she fell victim to the Japanese submarine I-166. Heavily damaged, the transport was towed by the US destroyer Paul Jones and the Dutch destroyer Van Ghent, towards Singaraja, on the north coast of Bali. Unfortunately, however, the crippled transport was taking too much water to complete the transit, so she was beached at Tulamben to salvage the cargo and fittings.
What remained of the Liberty languished at Tulamben for another twenty one years, until tremors from the 1963 eruption of nearby Mt. Agung caused the vessel to slip off the shore to her current position on a sand slope. During this process, the hull broke in two and she now lies a short 30 m (100 ft) swim from the beach, parallel to the shore, with her deck side facing the open sea.
The wreck is the most visited diving site of Bali, at a perfect depth for all experience levels, ranging from 9m (29 ft), down to the bow, which lies at around 29 m (95 ft). There are a couple of very open swimthroughs, but be aware that the aging structure is unstable and prone to collapse. Corals and anemones cover the wreck, and marine biologists estimate that about 400 different species of reef fish call the Liberty home.
Dive 2 The Drop Off:
A short walk to the west of the Liberty is a section of steep wall simply known as The Drop Off. This site is home to a collection of giant Gorgonian fans and Barrel sponges, clinging to a wall that carries all the way down to 70m (230 ft).

Scuba DIVING in BALI! Awesome USAT LIBERTY SHIPWRECK in Tulamben | Bali | Vlog 103
It's our first day diving in Amed and we head to Tulamben with Amed Fun Divers for two amazing dives, one of which is the incredible USAT Liberty shipwreck! (03:40)
The United States Army transport ship was torpedoed by Japanese submarines during WW2, eventually becoming beached at Tulamben. In 1963, after tremors from the eruption of Mount Arung, the ship slipped off the beach and now sits just off the shore in 9-30m deep water. It makes for a truly fantastic dive site!

This is a short video shows a huge school of Jackfish that we swam through around the wreck, with little bits and pieces of the marine life that had settled on the wreck site.
The dive was arranged by Mola Mola Dive - ( ) and was quite a pleasant experience for a rainy day, though a long drive from Nusa Dua.

BRIEF HISTORY OF USAT LIBERTY SHIPWRECK
A series of events brought the famous World War II USAT Liberty to its current resting place 40 meters from the shore in Tulamben.
Firstly, in 1942 the ship was torpedoed in the Lombok Strait by a Japanese Submarine whilst carrying a supply of rubber and railway parts from Australia.
Two destroyers were assigned to tow the damaged ship to the port of Singaraja on the north coast of Bali, however it was so badly damaged and starting to sink that it had to be beached at Tulamben where the cargo and fittings were later removed.
The ship remained on the shore for 21 years until the tremors caused by the eruption of Mount Agung in 1963 caused it to slide down the beach into the ocean where it now lies on a sandy slope in 5-30 meters of water.
The designation ‘USAT’ stands for United States Army Transport

1st two Dives with my GoPro...
USAT Liberty was a United States Army transport ship torpedoed by Japanese submarine I-166 in January 1942 and beached on the island of Bali. She had been built as a design 1037 ship for the United States Shipping Board during World War I and had served in the United States Navy during that conflict as animal transport USS Liberty (ID-3461). She was also notable as the first ship constructed at Federal Shipbuilding, Kearny, New Jersey. In 1963 a volcanic eruption moved the ship off the beach, and Liberty's wreck is now a popular dive site.

See where we are now ???? [ ]
Indonesia was a impromptu destination when Nepal fell through [ - but I am SO happy we went here, I think it is my 2nd favorite place we’ve visited in the world! ????
To start, we met some amazing people including an incredible gentleman from a Netflix documentaries called Departures, a friend of a friend who worked at Twitter and met us on a deserted beach, and a retired miner who had one of the world’s most dangerous jobs mining sulphur in Ijen! [ ]
Indonesia was also a scuba diving paradise. Crystal clear warm waters that brings herds of wildlife into the reefs for food. One one dive, we saw 15 turtles!!! And one turtle swam into my back as it tried to push its way to a patch of coral below.
I really wanted this video to be perfect… so I didn’t publish it … and I still think I can make it better but Olivier wants to share it so I’ll leave it as is, and hope you enjoy it. ☺️

Scuba Diving In Tulamben USS Liberty Shipwreck, Bali
The best way to observe a fish is to become a fish. This dive site is one of the best in Bali.

2013 Tulamben Bali Spot Diving
Tulamben is a small fishing village on the north-east coast of Bali. It is among the most popular dive sites on Bali since the wreck of the Liberty, a US Army Transport ship torpedoed by a Japanese submarine in 1942 lies just off shore. During high-season, up to 100 divers descend to the wreck each day
The wreck lies in shallow water and is considered appropriate for divers of all certification levels. The ship rests in 30 metres of water, is roughly 25 metres from shore and can be reached with a short swim from the beach. The highest point of the wreck tops out about 5 metres from the surface. The ship was torpedoed by the Japanese off the nearby Island of Lombok and the ship was towed to the beach at Tulamben for salvage operations. The 1963 eruption of Mt. Agung, which devastated much of the eastern side of Bali, drove the ship into the water just off shore, where it became encrusted with coral and a home to other sea life.
The best conditions for diving here are during October and November, when the weather is generally calm and during the start of southeast monsoon, which typically extends from May to July. In addition to a wide variety of corals and invertebrates on the wreck itself, large fish frequent the wreck in some seasons, most popularly Mola mola and whale sharks, as well as Black-tip reef sharks. Professional divers have praised local residents for minimizing local fishing activity.

Epic Bali Holiday: Uluwatu, Ubud, Tagallalang, Lovina, Menjangan, Kuta
Days 1-2: We stayed in Kuta for the first two nights. Kuta is just a 15 minute drive from the airport in Denpasar, which is the capital of Bali. From Kuta, we visited Tanah Lot Temple (40-60 minutes west of Kuta) as well as Uluwatu and Padang Padang (which are south of Kuta).
Days 2-4: We traveled about one hour north by bus to Ubud, which is known as Bali's cultural and artistic heartland. The bus cost just 70,000 Rupiah per person. There we visited the Ubud Palace, spent a morning in the Tagallalang terraced rice fields, and went on a bicycle tour through the countryside, which was filled with more beautiful rice fields.
Days 4-6: We traveled even further north (about three hours) to Lovina, which is famous for morning dolphin watching. The bus from Ubud costs approximately 90,000 Rupiah per person. We, of course, saw dolphins; you have to be out on the water by 6:15 am-ish in order to do this. We also took a day trip to Menjangan Island (1.5 hours by bus + 30 minute boat ride) for snorkeling.
Days 7-8: We returned to Kuta Beach for surfing and relaxation. In addition to hanging out on the beach, we explored the boutiques of Seminyak, shopped at the surf outlets, and rented a scooter and drove out to Nusa Dua.
Bali is incredible!! Can't wait to go back!
