According to Tim Flannery (The Future Eaters), fire is one of the most important forces at work in the Australian environment. Aboriginal people used fire-stick farming to burn vegetation to facilitate hunting and promote the growth of bush potatoes and other edible ground-level plants. In central Australia, they used fire in this way to manage their country for thousands of years. Flannery writes that The use of fire by Aboriginal people was so widespread and constant that virtually every early explorer in Australia makes mention of it. It was an Aboriginal fire that prompted James Cook to call Australia 'This continent of smoke'..................

Economic damage from 2009's Black Saturday fires, the costliest in Australia's history, reached an estimated $4.4 billion. Moody's Analytics says the cost of the 2019–2020 bushfires is likely to exceed even that figure and will cripple consumer confidence and harm industries such as farming and tourism. .........................
Riverina
On 30 December, the Green Valley fire burning east of Albury near Talmalmo (which had started the day prior) developed into an unprecedented fire event for the Snowy Valleys[116] as a result of extreme local conditions. The smoke plume rose to an estimated 8,000 metres (26,000 ft) and developed a pyro-cumulonimbus cloud, becoming a firestorm. The result was extreme, the wind was described by crews on the ground as in excess of 100 km/h (62 mph), with spot fires starting over 5 km (3.1 mi) ahead of the main fire front.[citation needed]
Firefighters described what they believed to be a tornado generated by the fire storm, which began flattening trees and flipped a small fire vehicle. The tornado then impacted a crew of firefighters working to protect a property, flipping their tanker over and trapping the crew inside, who were then overrun by fire. One firefighter was killed with multiple others injured, with one airlifted to Melbourne and two to Sydney.
Snowy Mountains
The Dunns Road fire was believed to have been started by a lightning strike on 28 December in a private pine plantation near Adelong. In the Snowy Valleys local government area, by 2 January 2020 the Dunns Road fire had burnt south of the Snowy Mountains Highway in the Ellerslie Range near Kunama. Over 130,000 hectares (320,000 acres) was burnt and the fire was out of control. The NSWRFS issued an evacuation order to residents in the Batlow and Wondalga areas. Residents and visitors to the Kosciuszko National Park were evacuated and the national park was closed. 155 inmates from the Mannus Correctional Centre near Tumbarumba were evacuated...........................

“The first step in designing a shelterbelt is to determine what you want that belt to do. What you want the shelterbelt to do determines the type of shelterbelt to plant. Shelterbelts can actually have a detrimental impact on farm productivity if they are not appropriately designed.
There are several key elements to effective shelterbelt design. The elements that need to be considered when designing a windbreak are height, length, density, location, number of rows and the species to be used. It is important to maximise the height of a windbreak, as its height will determine the area over which the windbreak has a positive impact.
Using the tallest suitable shelter species in at least one row of the belt will increase the eventual area over which a windbreak is effective. The use of good quality plant species from a local provenance will help to achieve this. The species used for the taller row can be fast growing, to achieve maximum height quickly.............
Gaps within a windbreak reduce its effectiveness. Gaps can result in an increase in wind speed due to the wind accelerating as it funnels through the gap within the shelterbelt. This effect is often called wind tunneling.
Where gaps in a break are necessary, for example for gateways, a small strip of shelter in front of the gap or creating an angled gap can over come this problem.”

Boggo Road Gaol Jail History Tour - Brisbane - by Grasshopper Travel

Green Hills State Forest NSW Australia covers an area of about around 26,000 hectares and is located South of Adelong and West of Batlow, New South Wales. Green Hills State Forest is predominantly radiata pine plantation.
Out of control bush fire started from the Dunn's Road bush fires that started late 2019, and reached Batlow area on Saturday 4 January. 2020.
The Dunn’s Road Fire has passed over the Green Hills and Batlow area, the bush fires are still out of control East of Talbingo, in the Bogong Peaks Wilderness area, and the Snowy Alpine area near Adaminaby.
Dunn's Road bush fire burned area currently is 331981 hectares in size and is still burning in many difficult terrains on many fronts, and also being constrained by easily accessible NSW RFS containment lines.

On 3 January 2020, the Dunns Road fire burned from Batlow into Kosciuszko National Park, consuming much of the northern part of the park. The fire caused significant damage, severely damaging the Selwyn Snow Resort, destroying structures in the town of Cabramurra and almost completely destroying the heritage-listed precinct (and the birthplace of skiing in Australia) of Kiandra.
Kiandra's historic former courthouse[128] was left with only its walls standing after a fire so hot that the glass and aluminum in the windows melted. Several high country huts, including Wolgal Hut and Pattinson's Hut near Kiandra, were also feared to have been destroyed. By 11 January, three fires had merged – the Dunns Road fire, the East Ournie Creek, and the Riverina's Green Valley fire – and had created a 600,000-hectare (1,482,632-acre) mega-fire, burning south of the Snowy Mountains.

Fossicking for Gems I’m Central Queensland , Australia
Gem fossicking has been on my list for a while and the trip was a must to visit two small towns in Central Queensland.
I have experienced gold panning after growing up in Kalgoorlie in Western Australia but had no idea on what you would look for when panning for Gems.
We headed into Central Queensland towards Emerald a small coal mine 4 hours drive away. It was already hitting 38 degrees at 10 am so we knew it was going to be a hot one.
We stayed in Emerald for 1 night and after a bit to eat headed towards Rubyvale and Sapphire small gem towns only 40 minutes out of Emerald.
Most of the places had closed for the summer months but there was a tourist gem centre open called Pats Gems.
They demonstrated how to pan, what to look for when looking for coloured gems.
You are given a bucket of dirt a sieve and tweezers and basically left to go through your bucket of dirty in the hope of finding a gem.
Although we didn’t find anything big enough to brag about , we came home with a few small stones and the experience we can recall to our friends.
If you are travelling in the Central part of Queensland we would recommend to make the extra trip to try this.

The Hume and Hovell Track is a 426 kms multiday hike that leads from Yass to Albury in NSW, Australia.
It follows the route taken by colonial explorers Hamilton Hume and William Hovell in 1824 and lies between the Main Range of the Snowy Mountains and the Hume Highway, nuzzled amongst the Snowy Valleys region.
The walk doesn't have to be done as a single thru-hike, but like me, can be undertaken in stages. Here's part 2 of my 3 days between Talbingo and Tumbarumba.

Buildings destroyed as out-of-control NSW bushfire races towards beach communities | ABC News
A bushfire burning out of control on the New South Wales South Coast has destroyed at least one home and shut off escape routes for residents in nearby coastal communities.
The fire, north of Batemans Bay at Currowan, which is subject to an emergency warning, crossed the Princes Highway into Murramarang National Park on Monday, bolstered by strong westerly winds.
The NSW Rural Fire Service (RFS) said one house on the Clyde River, as well as other structures, were destroyed in the afternoon but no further details were available.

I love Gold panning N.S.W Australia as we have some great alluvial gold and even better bush to explore here.
A mate and I went on a gold prospecting trip out to a new area called Native Dog Creek in Essington State Forest in N.S.W.

We set out on Saturday morning at 5am from Sydney and headed out over the mountains to Oberon, we turned left and drove another 20kms south to Essington State Forest arriving at 8am.
We made our way down to the the creek and came across a small sand bar formed behind a tree and started to test pan the area with some nice results in the first pans, so we decided to set up there and working the area.
We stayed at the spot for a few hours before we decided to do some location scouting. We crossed the river and found some nice bedrock and crevices and found some more gold. We finished up at the second spot and headed back to the original spot as it was a good location for the camp.
A few beers and a clean up of the alluvial gold from day one, all in all day one at Native Dog Creek was a great day panning with some nice gold found.

Fitzroy Falls offers a spectacular national park experience. In addition to magnificent waterfalls, it is a great place to experience a lyrebird singing along one of the walking tracks, vistas into the rainforest gullies of Morton National Park from one or more of the many lookouts, a bush picnic by the creek or a refreshing cuppa in the Falls Cafe.
Tourist information, maps, interpretative displays, souvenirs, local craft, annual Parks Passes and Discovery Tours (prior booking required) are available at the Visitor Centre.
