Civil War Reenactment - 155th Anniversary of The Battle of Tunnel Hill
The Battle of Tunnel Hill 26th annual Civil War reenactment in Tunnel Hill, Georgia, was an absolute smash! Hosted at the beautiful Tunnel Hill Heritage Center, on September 6-8, 2019, the Battle of Tunnel Hill was a smorgasbord of history and fun! With live reenactors on the battlefield and huge cannon blasts every 5 minutes or so, you’ll find yourself singing Dixie and cheering your troops on in no time.
“I have fought against the people of the North because I believed they were seeking to wrest from the South its dearest rights. But I have never cherished toward them bitter or vindictive feelings, and I have never seen the day when I did not pray for them.” Robert E. Lee
To say the Civil War had a lasting impression on the United States of America would be a tremendous understatement! For many, the American Civil War took their loved ones, their homes, their farms, their livelihood. Yet, God was merciful to our young nation and poured his grace upon our land, He gave forgiveness to the bitter, hope to the hopeless, humility to the proud.
Dwelling on past wrongs and oppressions is not easy, but as Maya Angelou put it,“History, despite its wrenching pain, cannot be unlived, but if faced with courage, need not be lived again.” We must never forget history, but must always look to it as the schoolmaster of life.

THE BATTLE OF TUNNEL HILL || 155th Anniversary Reenactment
It was great fun to attend the annual Battle of Tunnel Hill reenactment last month! A huge thanks to my friend Joseph Cochran of Joseph Cochran Productions for letting me come along and offer what little help I could in the filming of this event, and for letting me use some of the footage from the shoot to compile my own film of this epic battle.
As the great Confederate General Robert E. Lee said, What a cruel thing war is... to fill our hearts with hatred instead of love for our neighbors. The War Between the States was a terrible time in the history of our great Nation, but in the end, we came out stronger, with God's help.
Abraham Lincoln gave us a great reminder to be mindful of our actions, and that history will remember us whether we do right or wrong: Fellow citizens, we cannot escape history. We, of this Congress and this administration, will be remembered in spite of ourselves. No personal significance, or insignificance, can spare one or another of us. The fiery trial through which we pass will light us down in honor or dishonor, to the latest generation.
Make sure to stop by next September for the Battle of Tunnel Hill reenactment! It's an awesome time and a great learning experience for all folks, young or old.

FEC Railway 6/7/13: Daybreak in North Florida
With summer comes vacation, and this one was bound to be memorable! We were bound for the Florida Keys and the East Coast. In rail-enthusiast eyes, Florida and East Coast mean one thing: FEC. So, on the morning of June 7th, we woke at the crack of dawn and headed trackside. ATCS Monitor and the TeamViewer application were our friends, as FEC does not call signals on their mainline. We saw that a northbound was coming into St. Augustine as we left, so we picked a spot just north of town to shoot.
Situated at CP Magnolia South, across from the airport, we first caught FEC train 222, led by FEC SD70M-2 104 and FEC SD40-2 716. Both RailAmerica and the original FEC diesel scheme were represented on the point of the long intermodal-manifest mix. Hearing that local traffic was coming out of Jacksonville, we followed the train north.
As 222 stopped at CP Bayard North, we continued by, crossing over the mainline immediately north of the control point. We pulled into the parking lot and setup in time to catch local FEC 977 heading south. Running long-hood-forward, FEC GP40-2 427 led a string of boxcars by. After 977 crossed over onto the siding, 222 started up and continued toward Jacksonville.
FEC 977's engineer and conductor went back and forth performing switching movements, so we drove south to see what we could find. In the middle of the publicly-accessible Flagler Center industrial park just south of Bayard, we saw headlights and stopped to watch the local switch out Ashley Furniture.
CSX Southern West Virginia Coal (DVD Video)
The Logan, the Big River, and the Big Coal Subdivisions
In 1994, Pentrex went on a tour of discovery along CSX branchlines in the coalfields of West Virginia to show you how coal was brought down out of the hollows and moved out to world markets. The beauty of the Appalachian Mountains, the power of the railroad, and the importance of the task are just as riveting today as they were then. Pentrex is proud to bring you the story of Southern West Virginia Coal!
Traveling on the Logan, the Big River, and the Big Coal Subdivisions, as well as their numerous connecting subs, youll see hard working diesels pull strings of hoppers up stiff grades and twisting branchlines where the cars will be flood-loaded at the mines. Cabooses are still utilized on some trains and rear-end pushers can be seen on others. Following the loaded trains out of the coalfields, youll visit a rail-to-river transfer facility where a rotary dumper quickly unloads the black diamonds into barges. An interview with Tim Hensley, CSX Resident Vice-President for West Virginia, provides intriguing insight. Mr. Hensley was once a locomotive engineer and he reflects on his personal experience and the significance of these coal operations to the railroad and the state.
Long, heavy trains grinding through curve after curve, powering through daunting grades, loaded with the raw ore that will feed a hungry nation; thats what youll find here. The action never ceases for CSX as it meets the challenge of the coalfields of Southern West Virginia!

Historic Log Cabins | Tennessee Life | Season 5 Episode 9
ISSAC ANDERSON CABIN
Plenty of Tennessee’s early homes were log cabins and although most have been torn down, there is currently an effort to save and showcase this state’s early homes. We start with the home of the man who founded Maryville College. Issac Anderson's cabin was built in 1802, and came very close to being demolished. Today it's being restored in Townsend at its new home at the Smoky Mountain Heritage Center.
FRERICH'S SAWMILL
If you've ever wanted a log cabin for yourself, a family-run sawmill in Monroe County is one of the few places in the country that can make that happen! Frerich's sawmill started in 1953, and today still cuts lumber the old fashioned way.
DAVID HALL CABIN
For a woman in Anderson County, her love for log cabins stretches across acres. In fact, Libby Bumgardner has a collection of 6 of them! The one that her grandparents had lived in was always special to her - but then she discovered something tucked away in a box. It turns out her family cabin is also historic!

Film-Like Photographic Sequence of the Marshall House in Alexandria During the Civil War
Looped sequence of four photographs taken in quick succession with a 4-lens stereoscopic camera of pedestrian and carriage traffic in front of the Marshall House (large building in foreground on right) in Alexandria, Virginia, during the American Civil War, c. 1864. Taken by a photographer employed by Mathew Brady.
The Marshall House came to prominence because it was where Union Colonel Elmer Ellsworth was shot and killed while taking down a large Confederate flag flying from the building on May 24, 1861. His shooter, secessionist owner of the hotel James W. Jackson, was promptly killed by Union soldiers accompanying Ellsworth. Ellsworth was the first officer to die during the Civil War.
