Glasgow named cultural and creative 'centre' of UK
Glasgow named cultural and creative 'centre' of UK Glasgow has been listed as the top cultural and creative centre in the UK in a report from the European Commission. Following in the top five were London, Bristol, Brighton and Manchester, with Edinburgh just missing out in sixth place. Dundee was the next Scottish city to be ranked, coming in 12th. Glasgow came first for openness, tolerance and trust and cultural participation and attractiveness. The study ranks 190 cities in 30 European countries on various factors. Cultural vibrancy, creative economy, and the ability to bring in creative talent and nourish cultural engagement were all taken into account. Edinburgh came first for cultural venues and facilities in the UK.Capital of culture The report said: Glasgow was one of the first European capitals of culture, in 1990. Known as an industrial city, it has now gained recognition as a creative and cultural centre of European importance. Glasgow boasts over 100 cultural organisations and is home to five of the six internationally renowned national performing arts companies in Scotland. According to the council, Glasgow's museums have more visitors than in any UK city except from London. The city also counts eight Turner Prize winners who have been born in, trained in or worked out of Glasgow in recent years.'Bursting with energy' Bridget McConnell from Glasgow Life, the organisation that delivers cultural and sports events for Glasgow City Council, said: We always knew Glasgow was a global cultural leader and we're delighted that the European Commission has confirmed our position of the UK's leading cultural and creative city. Glasgow is a city bursting with energy, passion and creativity and filled with artists, designers, creators and innovators. We have world-class museums and galleries, incredible architecture and history and, as a Unesco City of Music, there's nowhere better to enjoy a gig. What's more, our openness, tolerance and trust has been rated as the best in Europe, confirming what we already know, that our people make Glasgow the best city in the world.

Turner Prize 2013 is the world's most prestigious award for contemporary art,
The Best opportunities for young artist to know about Turner prize... !
Turner Prize 2013 is coming to Derry~Londonderry, the first time the award has ever been held outside England.
It is arguably the world's most prestigious award for contemporary art, and presents the very best of current British art in a free exhibition. This is your chance to discover what is new and exciting in art right now.
Over recent decades the award has played a significant role in provoking debate about visual art and promoting public interest in contemporary art. Now in its 29th year, Turner Prize 2013 is held in Derry~ Londonderry as part of the City of Culture programme.
Founded in 1984 to celebrate new developments in contemporary art, the Turner Prize is awarded each year to a British artist under 50 for an outstanding exhibition or presentation of their work in the preceding 12 months. Artist nominations are invited every year and it is judged by an independent jury. The 2013 jury is Annie Fletcher, Curator of Exhibitions at the Van Abbemuseum, Eindhoven; Susanne Gaensheimer, Director of Frankfurt's Museum of Modern Art; Declan Long, writer and lecturer at National College of Art and Design, Dublin; Ralph Rugoff, Director of Hayward Gallery, London; the jury is chaired by Penelope Curtis, Director of Tate Britain.
The winner is announced at an awards ceremony on Monday 2 December.
The Turner Prize Shortlist 2013
Laure Prouvost
For her new work Wantee commissioned with Grizedale Arts for inclusion in Schwitters in Britain at Tate Britain and for her two-part installation for the Max Mara Art Prize for Women, resulting from a residency in Italy and presented in collaboration with the Whitechapel Gallery. Her unique approach to filmmaking, often situated within atmospheric installations, employs strong story telling, quick cuts, montage and deliberate misuse of language to create surprising and unpredictable work.
Tino Sehgal
For his pioneering projects This Variation at documenta (XIII) and These Associations at Tate Modern. Both structured and improvised, Seghal's intimate works consist purely of live encounters between people and demonstrate a keen sensitivity to their institutional context. Through participatory means, they test the limits of artistic material and audience perception in a new and significant way.
David Shrigley
For his solo exhibition at Hayward Gallery David Shrigley: Brain Activity which offered a comprehensive overview and new perspectives on his work. Including not only his well-loved drawings but also photography, sculpture and film, the exhibition revealed his black humour, macabre intelligence and infinite jest.
Lynette Yiadom-Boakye
For her exhibition Extracts and Verses at Chisenhale Gallery. Yiadom-Boakye's intriguing paintings appear traditional but are in fact much more innovative. Her portraits of imaginary people use invented pre-histories and raise pertinent questions about how we read pictures in general, particularly with regard to black subjects.
The Turner Prize award is £40,000 with £25,000 going to the winner and £5,000 each for the other shortlisted artists. The Prize, established in 1984, is awarded to a British artist under fifty for an outstanding exhibition or other presentation of their work in the twelve months preceding 16 April 2013. It is intended to promote public discussion of new developments in contemporary British art and is widely recognised as one of the most important and prestigious awards for the visual arts in Europe.
The winner is announced at an awards ceremony on Monday 2 December 2013.

Guardian art critic Adrian Searle finds madness and mayhem at Tate Britain, home of the 2012 Turner prize exhibition. This year's shortlist is as varied as they come, with the scatological drawings of Paul Noble's invented world Nobson alongside a first performance-art nomination in the shape of Spartacus Chetwynd's interactive 'medieval morality plays'. The two other nominees both focus on film, with Luke Fowler's All Divided Selves, about the Scottish psychiatrist RD Laing, and Elizabeth Price's The Woolworths Choir of 1979 vying to take the prize

In the studio with Turner Prize 2013 nominee Lynette Yiadom-Boakye.
The figures in Lynette Yiadom-Boakye's portraits are all fictions, conjured from a scrapbook of memories. Each one is completed in a single day, because, as she puts it: 'Coming back to a work never improves it'. The paintings are carefully ambiguous -- clothing is generic, the setting is hard to discern and even the gender of the subjects is uncertain. On the eve of the 2013 Turner Prize exhibition in Derry, TateShots visited her at her studio in London's Bethnal Green.
Yiadom-Boakye was nominated for the Turner Prize on the strength of her solo exhibition Extracts and Verses at Chisenhale Gallery.
