This is a short video of the tobacco leaf dance I took at the Udatsu Marche event in Miyoshi City, Tokushima Japan, 8-2012. For more on this see
Mt.Tsurugi Trail [Tokushima Shikoku]
The second highest mountain in western Japan at 1,955 meters elevation boasts excellent scenery and you can see as far as Kishu area, the Seto Inland sea and even Cape Ashizuri in a fine day from its summit. Its panoramic view is breathtaking and the sea of clouds are very magical. You can find beautiful alpine plants when in season, such as Kirengeshoma palmata.
The name, Tsurugi meaning sword, originates from the legend that sword of the Emperor Antoku was hidden deep within these remote mountain. It is also known as the sacred mountain for mountain pilgrimage.
JAPANESE ADVENTURES: Iya Valley, Naruto, & More! Shikoku, Japan Part 2!
Hi, everyone! This is the second half of our trip around Shikoku. It was just as amazing as the first! We went to the eastern side of Iya Valley to check out two of the last three vine bridges there! We passed through a Scarecrow Village on the way! The citizens of the village joined together and made countless scarecrows, each one set up to mimic the citizens doing their jobs, or standing around town together in little groups. They're equal parts creepy and adorable!
The largest vine bridge is Iya Kazurabashi. That one is the main one and very touristy. 90% of people go there, but we chose to see the other two vine bridges (Oku-Iya Kazurabashi) and had them all to ourselves! It was beautiful. We were surrounded by this amazing nature. Crystal clear water, trees, and mountains.
All too soon, we had to leave. We slept at a hostel in Takamatsu and headed to Naruto the next morning. Naruto is famous for their whirlpools. We went to Onaruto Bridge to check them out. Unfortunately, they were really calm when we were there. I recommend going during the Spring Tides when they're at their biggest!

Discovering lesser-known scenic spots
It’s a bit of a climb…but once you reach the top…. (Chiba Prefecture)
Foreign tourists are flocking to little-known areas of Japan to experience the country’s legendary natural beauty.
This is Nokogiriyama, a mountain in southwest Chiba Prefecture.
The Boso Peninsula and even Tokyo Bay are visible from here.
But biggest draw is…this cliff.
Dubbed jigoku nozoki – “gazing down into hell” – the view can be intense.
For some...
Reporter / “Is it scary?”
Malaysian tourist / “Not at all.”
Toyama up north is home to another little-known scenic spot.
Take a bus for about 1 hour from Toyama Station… for a glimpse of the Sho River. (Tonami, Toyama)
A boat is the perfect vantage point to take in the changing leaves covering these mountains.
Taiwanese tourist / “Taiwan doesn’t have autumn leaves like this. It’s quite beautiful.”
Direct flights from Taiwan to Toyama airport have increased the numbers of tourists coming here.
Deep in the mountains, further upstream, this traditional ryokan inn welcomes visitors.
It’s only accessible by boat.
Featuring an outdoor bath, it’s the perfect place to relax and forget the stress of modern life.
Shikoku’s Iya Valley is one of Japan’s three greatest secret scenic spots.
(Miyoshi, Tokushima Prefecture)
Kazurabashi bridge is completely made from wood and other natural materials.
Crossing the bridge can be a nervewracking affair.
Don’t look down!
Most people take about 15 minutes to make their way across the 45-meter (50 yard) bridge.
The Iya Valley is Japan’s only entry on Travel and Leisure magazine’s “50 Best Places to Travel in 2018.”
Traditional Japanese houses here, called kominka, are now hotels.
Experiencing culture is part of the fun.
So is splitting wood …and cooking in traditional Hagama pots.
Jane, American tourist / “Nice rice!”
End the night with a Goemon-buro bath, looking out over the whole valley.
Jane, American tourist / “You look better!”
Bob, American tourist / “It’s hot!”
For Jane and Bob, 3rd-generation Japanese Americans, the experience has special meaning.
Jane, American tourist / “Because we have Japanese roots, and you grew up an America, you grew up an American and don’t know the Japanese culture. This is like, how my grandmother lived, and it’s such a warm feeling.”
Venturing deeper into Japan, off the beaten path, can be a rewarding experience.
