Road Tripping Through Tuscany
From the Etruscans to the Romans to the Renaissance, Tuscany is possibly the greatest repository of art in the world, from extraordinary paintings and sculpture to frescoes and architectural masterpieces.
Visitors to Tuscany come for many reasons. Our Tuscan adventure began in the Chianti region starting with Greve in Chianti, supposedly one of the main attractions in the area. To our dismay Greve was rather uneventful, and lacked the typical medieval Tuscan feel that we were hoping for.

DRIVING THRU ITALY TO FLORENCE, TUSCANY, ROME, POMPEII, SORRENTO & AMALFI, Our Ancient Civilization Trip
Our two week Ancient Civilization trip continues. We leave Greece and Fly to Italy. We start in Florence. Here we stay at the Sina Villa Medici Marriott Autograph Hotel. This property is in a great location for walking everything in the historic area of Florence. We climbed the duomo (make sure to make your reservations as only so many people can climb at once). We visited the Medici Palazzo (house) and walked the Ponte Vecchio (the bridge with the houses on it). We tried to attend church but with a marathon going on we could not make it as the running line trapped us in the historic center. I had the best truffle pasta at Hostaria Il Desco.
After Florence we loaded into our 9 passenger van, which makes total sense in the USA and not so much in ancient cities; and drove thru Tuscany on our way down to Rome. We did the Chianti region which was beautiful, full of charm, and even though it was rainy and cold the hills were still full of color.
In Rome we stayed at the Marriott Grand Hotel Flora, here we had a two bedroom which was fun to be all together. This hotel is next to the ancient wall and close to the Vatican City. The first morning we headed out early to the Vatican City. Here we had a tour guide so we skipped the line into the museum, saw the Sistine Chapel, St Peters Basilica and admired all the marble.
Afterwards we headed toward the Colosseum and had a 2 hour lunch at a restaurant that really knows how to make yummy soup. Gli Angeletti its on Via dell'Angeletto, 3, Roma
After warming up with soup we headed over to the Colosseum ran around for a bit, then took a crazy cab ride back to the hotel.
That night steer being exhausted from a long day we stayed in with room service.
The next morning we packed up and drove down to Pompeii. This was what Turner really wanted to see on this trip. Pompeii was much larger than I ever thought and we spent about 2 hours walking thru the 165 acre complex.
Then we continued on to Sorrento where we had an AirB&B in the heart of Sorrento. The location and space was great. In fact its by a Super Host and overall it was fine and would work for my family of 6 if we returned.
However, I don't know if I will ever go back to Sorrento or the Amalfi coast. I felt like its this hyped up place but in all honesty there really isn't anything special. We all agreed it felt like the whole area had been turned into a destination for cruise ships, the food isn't great and everything about it feels extremely tourist. Solerno at the end of the coast is actually better. Still we had trouble finding well prepared food. We were not on a budget but seriously finding really well prepared food in Italy was difficult no matter what we spent. Its frustrating because you think Italy will have amazing food flowing everywhere but the truth is that because so many areas only cater to tourists I think they lower their quality and change the authenticity to suit what travelers think they want. I had the best luck with soups. The truffle pasta in Florence and actually the pizza crust in Sorrento was really good.
After Sorrento, we drove back to Rome and took a flight to Istanbul. Turkey is a true highlight of this trip.

Florence (Tuscany) - Firenze (Toscana) Italy Trip January 2019
Being my first time to Florence / Firenze, I was totally amazed by this magical city!
An open air museum for sculptures, surrounded by magnificent churches and cathedrals such as the Santa Maria del Fiore, and a city full of galleries and art. Specifically Michelangelo, and Caravaggio. Had the honor to see Michelangelo's statue of David at the Accademia gallery (galleria accademia), the Birth of Venus painting at the Uffizi Gallery (gallerie degli uffizi).
Florence is also surrounded by a huge number of squares (Piazza or Piazze) including piazza della repubblica, piazza del duomo and piazza della signoria.

Tuscan Truffle Hunting Tour in San Miniato details:
- The pickup time was at 10 am in front of the National Library which was an easy 15 min walk from our AirBNB.
- I booked the excursion online. The excursion costs 350 euros for two people.
- Came with a 3 course lunch with truffles and wine tasting
- If you have a car and just want to join the truffle hunting, you can do that. There was a couple in our tour that drove here themselves. They said they found them online and booked it on their own. - I also read that leaving from the San Miniato train station takes about a 15 minute taxi ride that costs €25 each way. It takes about 30 minutes to take the train from Florence.
- DO BORROW their boots because the forest is often muddy.
- October and November has the best climate for truffle hunting. Although I'm here in October, today wasn't the best climate for truffle hunting because it wasn't cold and wet enough.
Truffle Hunting Dog Details!
In Italy, the use of pigs has been prohibited since 1985. The pigs dig into the ground looking for truffles and harms the entire truffle ecosystem in the process. With dogs, they can smell the truffle and alert their owners. The owner then carefully digs up the truffle and then closes the hole back up for future truffles to grow back. Dogs like Choco cost up to $10,000 US!
Next stop: wine tasting!
This winery started in 1535. They not only produce wines - they also produce olives. They breed Cinta Senese to produce salami and prosciutto. Cinta Senese is a breed of Italian pig from the province of Siena, in Tuscany. They also produce honey and produce and everything is organic!
The big barrels can be reused for 15 to 16 years. These barrels are huge! The big barrow gives the wine a freshness and fruitier taste. The small barrels are only used for 3 years. After 3 years the barrel absorbs too much wine to be reused.
The green glass on top of the barrel allows the gas created by fermentation to escape while not allowing air back in. This cool contraption was invented by Leonardo Da Vinci.
After the tour we got to taste their wines along with some salami and prosciutto. They add fennel seeds into the salami. It was very good!
Why does Florence, Italy bread have no salt?
The bread made in this region of Italy has no salt added. I didn't know that as it was my first time trying saltless bread. I'll have to admit I like my bread with some sodium. Bread from Tuscany and Florentine and maybe some other places near by don't add salt to their bread. There are many reasons for this: I don't know which one is true. But here goes: salt used to be heavily taxed so to save some money they stopped adding salt to their bread. Another reason is during war between Pisa and Florence the Pisan army set up a blockade on the Arno River to prevent salt shipments from reaching Florence. Without salt, bakers just continued baking their bread without the salt. Last reason is Tuscan cuisine tend to be on the saltier side so the bread is to help eat the salty food.
Final STOP: Plaza Michelangelo. He was willing to drop us off there instead so we can catch the sunset.
It was nice because this place was on my list to visit and it saved me a hike up the hill to get there.
The view up here is amazing! You can see the entire city of Florence from here. It was a bit cloudy to see the sunset, but it was still very nice.
