Norfolk Southern blasts through Madison, AL
Off a whim, I decided to head out to Madison to watch a few trains go by this past Sunday. #9383 came through within 5 minutes of me getting out there. Later, I caught the local switcher cruising through, and then a Union Pacific intermodal train rolled by, but he stopped just past the crossing. Supposedly, NS8096 (Conrail heritage unit) was supposed to be coming through, but the temperature dropped too much for comfort, and there was no mention of the unit since about 10 in the morning in Georgia.

Ride Along with NS 736 for Miles - Locomotives Working, Horn Blowing
Chase Norfolk Southern 736 for about seven miles next to the old Lee Highway from Cherokee, Alabama through Barton almost to Pride.
It's late in the day and NS 736 doesn't have far to go before arriving at the yard in Sheffield, Alabama. After Sheffield it will continue to Chattanooga and then go through Georgia with it's load of Powder River Coal for Georgia Power's Robert W Scherer Power Plant. Plant Scherer is in Juliette, Georgia, not far from Macon.
The modern U.S. 72 is often out of sight of the tracks, but the old two lane Lee Highway followed the railroad much of the way from Tuscumbia, Alabama to Iuka, Mississippi. Some sections of the road are closed, but for much of this route you can still take the two lane next to the tracks (and in a few places U.S. 72 is next to the tracks).
The lead locomotives are BNSF 6048 and BNSF 9807. The rear locomotives are BNSF 8432 and BNSF 6305.

The restaurant has windows in the dining room that give a good view of passing trains.
The locomotives are CSX 7718 and CSX 5335.
