What to do in Michigan - Pure Michigan Traverse City
Booking a trip to TC? - Start here - ????
???? P L E A S E • S U B S C R I B E - ???? ????
Traverse City, Michigan is a gem in the midwest with it's cherry festival and plenty of places to go. This water front city is surrounded by endless miles of lakefront shoreline - this is pure Michigan. Traverse City is a top summer destination for all to enjoy. If you're planning on visiting TC, be sure to allow ample time during your trip because your schedule will quickly fill up. While everyone knows about the amazing water activities like wakeboarding, water skiing, paddle boarding, and the infamous Torch Lake sand bar; however, Traverse city has great micro breweries, wineries, restaurants, and hiking as well. During our time in TC, we were amazed with how much the city had to offer.
If you're looking to get outdoors, be sure to make your way to Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore. This national park is unlike any other with 450 food dunes towering over the majestic lake Michigan. While at Sleeping Bear Dunes National Park, be sure to do the Dune Climb and the Pierce Stocking scenic drive. If you decide to do the Dune Climb, be prepaired for a strenuous 3-4 hour hike that culminates with a dip in cool lake Michigan.
Breweries we visited:
Left foot Charlie Winery
The Filling Station Brewery - loved the pizza
The Workshop brewery - great beer and food
Right Brain Brewery - has an indoor bowling machine

Sailing Beginning C&C25
C&C 25 Manufactured by Korneuburg Austria. C& C Yachts was formed in 1969, when Canadian boat builders Belleville Marine Yard, Hinterhoeller Ltd. and Bruckmann Manufacturing joined forces with the design firm of Cuthbertson & Cassian Ltd. New capital was raised through a stock offering on the Toronto Stock Exchange. Although Ian Morch of Belleville Marine Yard was the first president, he reigned in 1971 taking the Belleville assets with him. George Hinterhoeller was then named president. Later, in an interview, Hinterhoeller states that he accepted this postition reluctantly. He resigned in 1973, and was replaced by Geroge Cuthbertson who continued in that role until 1981.
C&C Yachts quickly established a reputation as a builder of high quality sailing yachts that were also successful on the race course.
From it's inception, as its first models were displayed at various boat shows in the US and Canada, the company sold as many boats as it could produce. In addition, a steep duty imposed by the Canadian government had also made them relatively affordable in the Canadian market.
After weighing different options for expansion, the company decided to open a new plant in Rhode Island.(1976) In doing so, it benefited from very favorable financial terms offered by the Rhode Island Port Authority and Economic Development Corporation. In addition, plans were made to open another plant in Keil, Germany. This was also due to an offer of special, low interest loans.
Throughout the late 1970's and early 1980's, C&C continued to develop and build new models, all of which were well received. Their revamped racing program brought the brand additional renown. But also during this time, a long, slow financial decline had begun. In 1976, George Hinterhoeller sold out and went back to boat building on his own. A plant at Kiel Germany closed in a few short years after incurring enormous losses. This and other factors were caused, in part, by a dramatic downward slide in the value of the American and Canadian dollar. An added factor was the gradual loss of the original personnel.
The death of George Cassian in 1979, one of the driving forces of the company was a major loss. Geroge Cuthberson left the company in 1982.
Finally, after the plant in Rhode Island closed, the last of the original partners, Eric Bruckman, head of the C&C custom shop, also moved on.
By 1985, C&C yachts was left with a single plant at Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ont.
From this time on, a long series of changes of ownership and various financial manipulations were to take place.
By 1990, no new ownership, or source of financing could be found and the company went into receivership. For the first time in its history, C&C failed to exhibit at the Toronto International Boat Show.
In 1992, there was a temporary reprieve. C&C was sold to Hong Kong based shipping magnates, Anthony Koo and Frank Chow. The name was changed to C&C Yachts International. By 1994, the factory was operating to capacity building a new 51, the the Tripp designed IMS 45 as well as the SR range of sport boats, designed by Glenn Henderson and originally built in Florida.
But then, in the same year, a fire broke out in the factory, completely destroying most of the tooling and the boats currently under construction. Insurance only provided a small portion of the losses.
In 1996, the factory closed, and the land, tooling and trademark were sold.
Just a year later, a joint venture was been formed with another defunct builder, Tartan Marine, to build a new line of C&C yachts. These new models included the C&C 99, 110, and 115 which were well received and sold relatively well.

Francisco Morazan shipwreck South Manitou Island
September 1, 2011
South Manitou Island, Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore
Shipwreck of the Francisco Morazan
Gambling with late season Great Lakes weather, but wanting to make one last trip before winter, the Francisco Morazan left Chicago on November 27, 1960. The steel-hulled Liberian freighter was bound for Holland via the St. Lawrence Seaway loaded with 940-tons of general cargo.
The 24 year old captain, Eduardo Trivizas, and a multi-national crew of 13 men sailed the ship. Captain Trivizas had five years of sailing experience and was a graduate of the Greek Navy School. The Francisco Morazan was his first command. The Captain's wife and traveling companion, Anistasia, age 29 who was pregnant with their second child was also aboard.
By the next day, a 40-MPH wind blew out of the northwest, and the Morazan's decks were awash. After the ship passed the Point Betsie Light, blinded by fog and heavy snow, she ran aground about 300 feet off the southwest shore of South Manitou Island. The ship maintained contact with two Coast Guardsmen at the North Manitou Island Lighthouse and with a state forester stationed on South Manitou Island who flashed light signals to the stranded ship. Rescue vessels arrived the next morning along with two helicopters and an amphibian airplane from the Traverse City Coast Guard Station.

The lake was wild all day, but the ship did not seem to be in immediate danger, but the Captain was worried that some of the big waves might lift the ship off the shoal and carry it into deeper water. He arranged to have his wife lifted from the ship by helicopter on Friday, December 2. By Sunday, Dec 4, the crew abandoned ship and was taken by the ice-breaker Mackinaw to Traverse City.
The owners of the Francisco Morazan could never be found and nothing was done about removing the ship. It is now home to cormorants and gulls.
Take the 2.5 mile round trip hike from the Village on South Manitou Island to view the shipwreck. The Traverse City Visitor Bureau has more information on shipwrecks in the area.

North Channel Trip 2005 Video 10 - Presque Isle to Harrisville
We left Presque Isle with the intent of getting south of Saginaw Bay. But severe thunderstorms were forecasted to enter Lake Huron by 9:00am so we opted instead to stop for the night at Harrisville. It gave us time to give the boat a good cleaning inside and out and to do the laundry that had piled up for the last week.

The quest for the 'Holy Grail' of shipwrecks in the Great Lakes
Alpena, Mich. --- It's one of the oldest and most sought after shipwrecks in the Great Lakes. On Thursday, you can learn more about the quest for one of the Great Lakes most infamous ships. State maritime archaeologist Dean Anderson will talk about the quest for the discovery of the Griffon. The ship went missing in September of 1679 after setting sail from Green Bay in western Lake Michigan. The mystery and folklore surrounding the ship make it one of the most interesting shipwrecks in the world. Its sort of been deemed as the 'holy grail' of shipwrecks in the Great Lakes because of it's antiquity and because of it's association with [René-Robert Cavelier, Sieur de] La Salle, so a lot of people have been looking for it over the years for hundreds of years even, said Wayne Lusardi, state maritime archaeologist. Since I started here in 2002, there have been 27 Griffon discoveries reported, and none of which are the Griffon.Catch this fascinating lecture on Thursday night at the Great Lakes Maritime Heritage Center. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. and Anderson will begin the presentation at 7:00 p.m.For more information, visit thunderbayfriends.org.
